Please tell me how emerald cut diamonds behave!

I don’t know but none of my other diamonds change that much in this room! That’s why I was super concerned. Hubby says they are LED lights but idk

That's disturbing. Are your other diamonds RBs or are any of them step cuts?
Most of my stones look like crap in the clinic diffused fluorescent lighting at work but I just ignore it.. LEDs make everything look great. I love the diamond you're showing but this is worrisome.

They are all rounds! This diamond really perplexed me and I had to pass on it. I returned it today so that I wouldn’t get attached. Lol
This is how it looked in the car, before I pawed it and in the ring holder. Sigh.

I'm giving up after you did but something's not right. My not very pricey 1.07 K EC never looks like that.
Sigh. There's a good one out there for you.

Do you think it was just my sweaty paws? Or the Leakage Karl K mentioned?

Ask Karl, he is the King. I've never seen such a discrepancy due to lighting but I don't have the background to offer an opinion.
I didn't think that stone had a whole lot of leakage. Step cuts, tilt windows, okay, but I can't explain how it looked so disappointing in that lighting and so lovely in other environments. Rats!
I wish diamondhoarder would weigh in here. Now there's a freakin' eye as well.

Hi @nala I’m not a cut expert but I think the depth was issue. 54.5% depth for larger step cut seems too shallow. It’s a shame bc I really like the make of ec you posted. Looked antique-y to me.

I really liked it too.. sigh. I think I lack the confidence with this cut. I don’t even no one person who has one so it’s hard to trust myself. I did the distance test by putting it on my hubby’s finger to admire it from afar and I was underwhelmed. The other issue was the fear that bezeling it—bc I wanted a comfortable rhr,—i feared the bezel would make it worse. It’s soo odd. In the perfect lighting it was crispy and sleek and fiery! I have videos to prove it! But in a matter of hours and different location it went dull.

Here’s an example of one with the pretty clipped corners-this one is super deep (probably more deep than you need) but I just wanted to give you a visual example of one that would look good from all angles…

Drooling.

An ASET image would not help, your eyes are telling you it reacts to obstruction to much for you.
The BG one above would also as its a contrasty design.

That's so interesting! I learn something new everyday here :)
I now see what you mean by the BG one being too contrasted. On the ASET, I thought the blue = contrast / obstruction? Or is contrast and obstruction 2 different things?

Out of curiosity, what do you think about the JP one?

How does it go from looking like this—which I love to looking lifeless. Only led lights or the sun does it looks super contrasting? So I guess that I love the shape. I’m Not mad at color. Like the price and don’t mind the clarity. Is your stone a chameleon like this?
Or a DR Jekyll, lol?

I don't think I see that in mine, but it's a different style EC. Here's some pics in shade, full sun, and in the dark with spot lighting for comparison. I tried to add more descriptions about the lighting, but couldn't. Maybe it looks a bit glassy in full sun?

Spot Lighting: this is where it goes really dark, but throws off a lot of fire.

I agree, the shape was killer! I wonder if any of the recommended vendors could find you something similar with better performance.

Yes, blue is obstruction in ASET.
Obstruction is one form of contrast.
There are others.
Haven't looked at the JP ones information.

@Diamond Girl 21 ty for your pics! Gorgeous! I don’t know if the worst case pics were a result of being dirty? I had window installers all day and couldn’t clean it. But I was just afraid that even after a few hours —if a stone looks like that —goes beyond dirt. Here’s a pic of It in optimal lighting. I don’t want to source another one bc I don’t think anyone can find this size at this price. At the end of the day, this was attractive bc it was big! And yet. I don’t see myself wearing a 2 carat on my right anyway. Sigh.

It looks gorgeous in this pic!

Thank you! I'm happy to share. I'm still learning about her personality.

I’m telling you! This is why it was so hard to reconcile how it went from that—jewelry store lighting to flat and dull and lifeless in other lights. I keep having second thoughts about returning it but hubby says I’d have more if I kept it.

Yes, I don't understand it either. Boy it's gorgeous when it's clean though! I think your hubby's right. You should love it at all times.

well that explains THAT! No wonder I love it, I love his emerald cuts! do you have a thread on it?

I do...in the LG forum. I would link it, but I don't know how. I'm ridiculously challenged when it comes to this stuff. It took me forever to learn how to post images.

My experience:

All diamonds look best when spotlessly clean and free from even the tiniest smudge of grease.

But some (eg RBs) tolerate real world dirt (a light film of skin oils, water spots, soap residue) better than others (eg ECs). ECs become dull with this stuff faster than RBs. Like smudges on a flat mirror are so much more obvious, and disfiguring, than on an intricately cut crystal wine glass, when the multiple sparkles will draw your eye away.

And people have different tolerances for this too. And different lifestyles of course.

I don’t think I would go around dirtying the stone. I baby my rings. I think my biggest concern would be that it doesn’t seem vivid? Like. The sharp contrast that I see in my favorite pics seems to only come from when it is in a holder. When I drop it into a setting—and I would want it bezeled to outline the shape—I think it would look dull.

Ah, in that case, it might just be that it needs masses of light to look good - more than could be achieved in a standard "real world" setting.

Which means it’s not a great stone.

I don’t know what to make about this emerald cut that I’m contemplating. I’m in the discovery process.
I love love love it in the sunlight—but is that a given?
I love it when it’s just been steamed—but after pawing it for a few hours, lol, it looks dull.
I dropped it in a few settings and I’m some, the bow tie is very obvious!
Finally. I feel like i can appreciate the steps only if I’m gazing at it close—up. I am near-sighted but I feel that I have to pull it really close to my face.
Pictures to follow. Please tell me about your experience with emerald cuts!
