Many of you know about my upgrade (woot!) from a 2 ct to an almost 4 ct oec. Well DH must have had a brain transplant because now he says that I can keep my other ring if I want to (we have gone from "I need to sell my 2ct before even thinking of upgrading" to "upgrade now and sell later" to "meh, keep it if you want to". He even said if I do decide to sell, that I can put it toward another piece of bling. I feel very fortunate. I know many of you have upgraded and some of you have kept and some have sold. Would love to hear what you would do as well as your stories :) I am posting a pic of both rings. I am torn because I love my 2ct, but I wonder how much I will wear it now that I have the new one. So I wonder if I should sell for a future bling project (like a big 5 stone would be nice) or maybe convert to a pendant, or what. Also I do have my very first e-ring which I wouldn't sell for sentimental reasons.

I would not sell if I did not have to. But I would not call it an “upgrade” or my “engagement ring” as the original still exists…once you are married the new ring is not technically an engagement ring. Rather it is a new ring.

Personally, for me, I would sell. I'm not a more is better and really don't like having multiples of things. I have 2 rings I can use as
engagement rings and I have to pause to figure out which one to wear. I feel bad if I haven't worn one of them in a while (like they
have emotions and know they are being ignored :oops2: ). I know that the way I am is not typical for PS though!

So, maybe you should hold on to it for a while and see if you do wear it occasionally. Do you have a nice size pendant?
This would make a really nice one!

If you find you don't wear it after a while then perhaps that's when you should rehome it?

I would not sell if I don’t have to, plus I like to wear different rings depends on many factors and the two rings looks differently enough for me to consider they are different style.
Maybe you can sell it when you decide to start another bling project ?

I'm like you in that I have my very first e-ring which I would never sell due to sentiment. However, I have upgraded several times since then and have sold or traded in each subsequent stone to get the next. For me, I wouldn't wear a smaller stone if I had a larger one, so the smaller one has to go! Plus it frees up funds for other bling projects.

What a great dilemma to be in. I would consider the price that I paid for the ring I would intend to sell. If it would not make a dent on the new price, I would be tempted to keep it. I would set it as a rhr or a pendant if I really loved it. If I knew that it would not get much wear, again, sell it.

How about putting your old diamond into a pendant while you think about what to do. That way you can wear it even when wearing your new ring and won’t be like “oh well this one is smaller, so, I don’t want to wear it at the same time” and you can think about what you really want to do. Perhaps you will want to sell it, in which case, you could sell it as a pendant either with or without the original ring mounting.

They are both beautiful and yah, maybe get your DH checked out by a professional ;)

That is the main reason I would be tempted to sell it - the idea of another project as a five stone is on my wish list as is an emerald solitaire. But @nala makes a great point about what you can get for it. It has been listed for sale and no bites on LT, but I have discussed a possible price point with a jeweler in Nashville - I won't be there until Nov. They have to see it first though. This was all before DH said I could just keep it. So now decisions, decisions...

I don't actually have an engagement ring.

But, I have had the issue of the same cut type and when I got a larger one, I didn't wear the smaller anymore for the most part, where there was a big difference in size.

I would vote to sell it or repurpose into something you might wear that is different entirely, like the 5 stone project (although finding matching stones for the center you have is no small task and will be a PITA/long term project for you). Right now, the two rings are too similar in style even for me, to justify them both.

The new ring is lovely, as well!

I voted “other” because there was one time when I didn’t like a diamond and wanted that thing far, far away from my eyeballs. I have another one where I don’t dislike it but its value as a trade up diamond with the retailer exceeds the value of how much I love it. The rest of my diamonds are stuck with me forever.

I did the same thing with stuffed animals as a child!

My hubby didn't want me to sell my original, but I finally convinced him that it was silly for me to keep it when I knew I'd never wear it. I had already stopped wearing it anyway. I'm happy that I sold it because I love my new ring!

Yes if I did a five stone it would not be with the original diamond it would be like a 2 carat weight total five stone ring. And I would use the funds from the sold ring to buy that. I can’t imagine having the 2 Carat Center in a five stone! And yes it would be really hard to match!

Lucky girl No brainer if you had to sell you sell. If your allowed to keep or sell for another project woo woo

Im in this same dilemma now! I am upgrading and haven’t decided what to do with my current ring. I was considering selling, setting in a pendant, having DK make a fabulous pendant or bracelet, etc. See? My thoughts are all over! Hubby said I could use the money toward another bling purchase too, but honestly, is it wise to take such a hit?? I do have daughters so it could easily go to one of them someday. So, for now, I’m stuck in indecision. :)
Just want to add: I have my original e-ring stone in a pendant. I will never get rid of that one.

I said "other" because I was thinking it would make an incredible 3 stone ring. But since you sound like you're most excited about on a five stone, why not sell it if you can. Beautiful OEC's are a hot commodity and in time someone will buy it.

A three stone would be phenomenal but much more expense  . If I did the five stone I would hope that the $ raised from selling would completely pay for it. If I did a pendant, then it would be "hmmmm, what kind of gemstone would fit the setting . And the list goes on. In any case, I have time to figure it out.

I forgot how big your hands are… but a 2 ct in the middle of four 0.3 ct stones would look lovely. Even if you can’t find oecs that match (and you might be able to) you could do rose cut or single cut sides and keep the antique feel. Then you have a five stone ring, you keep your pretty 2 ct diamond, and you probably don’t spend as much.

Yes, these are good problems to have. What a great husband!

For what it's worth, I think part of the reason that the ring may not have had any nibbles is because it is not certified by GIA. A lot of people feel uncomfortable with a larger purchase with an uncertified diamond.

If you want to sell it private party, I would consider having the stone certified by GIA. I think that would help a lot, if you are willing to do that.

You are right and if I go that route I would go through Grace. I’m kind of holding out for the Nashville contact. But I won’t be there until
Nov. So will probably see what they say and then go from there.

I’m size 5-5.25. An interesting idea. In any case now I have time :) Also I’m enjoying the new ring so much that I don’t mind this being on the back burner.

I had planned to sell my old e-ring when I upgraded but decided to keep it after my husband surprised me by saying he wouldn't mind, just like yours did.

I've just set it aside for now. If one of my kids don't want it for an e-ring then I plan to have something made with the diamond for myself, probably a right hand ring.

I guess you don’t have a thread on this yet? I want to know about your upgrade!

I am not in your position yet @Mreader but I would keep the 2ct if I could. LOL I am already talking to my partner about upgrading too! Fingers crossed.. I might have to wait about 7 years hahaha.

What I would do if money were no issue and I did not have to sell my ring to fund the upgrade. I would reset my current ring (maybe 3 stone or cluster), or even pendant. If you actually love the 2ct then it's worth keeping in the family :) maybe a daughter or future DIL could inherit the piece.

I also second what Elizat said about the GIA cert - depends on how much trouble you would like to go through to sell it. If you can get what you want and it's simple enough then it's fine. But sometimes it's more trouble than what it's worth - and also waiting for someone to buy it :)

I would not sell. I did get a kind of an upgrade. My original set is a 1,76 oval in a cathedral setting that I wear with a 2.25 eternity band. We purchased the stone from a friend who appraised jewelry but does not sell it. As a favor she called around to a few people she knew and was able to round up 4 rings for me to look at. It was the only stone that could be removed from its original setting without possibly being destroyed (all the others were vintage). It's an SI1 and I color. We got it for about 3 grand or so in 2003. I love the ring but I've always wanted a round. So for our 10th anniversary I got a 1 carat VS1 F WF ACA in a Danhov setting. I wear both. It just depends on how I feel that day. I'm very attached to my original ring. If I had to sell to fund my new ring I wouldn't have been able to. Fortunately my husband was okay with it.

If I had no sentimental attachment to the stone I would definitely sell it

if I had a “goal” ring I could create using it, I’d do that (ie round with pear sides, 5 stone, etc)

I just can’t imagine myself ever having two round diamond solitaires and wearing them both

Get it a mate and make studzzzzz ::)

i would see if there is something i could do with it so it won't be sitting in a box -- pendant, studs, etc. but if it's going to spend most of its life in a box, i'd sell it...
