I would not sell - I’m rather sentimental though. I get attached easily :D I don’t really see myself upgrading my (yet to be received) ering either, tbh, but this applies towards all my jewelry (at least for now) - I don’t like to sell! They all have memories attached :)

I would rather repurpose it, or keep it for more “low-key” days, with the view that a future daughter/DIL could inherit it.

The only reason I would consider selling is if there is a DREAM piece of jewelry that you can’t afford without selling.

Is the 2ct your original engagement ring? If so, I would reset into a three stone rhr. I wouldn’t want it in a pendant, I’d prefer it somewhere that I could actually see it.

If it’s not your original engagement ring or sentimental, then I’d sell and use the funds for something else.

Wow lucky gal, your DH is a keeper!

I am voting other, because it really depends on your financial situation. If you have the means to keep it, and think about it some more, do that. I think down the road, you will find a match like Yssie said to make a killer stud pair or drop earrings! That would be most people's dream, including mine.

At the same time, you could probably use the money else where or funding a new purchase without feeling much guilt. Plus having it sitting in the safe and not seeing much sunlight would be sad, because it is truly a beautiful stone.

I kept all my jewelry purchases and now I wish I had sold some because as situations change, I wish I have more liquid cash to do the things I want.

Get it a mate and make studzzzzz ::)

 Yes @yssie the most expensive option! Lol! Also w old cuts didn’t I read somewhere that what looks good in a ring doesn’t in earrings and pendants and vice-versa? Or maybe I dreamt that.

No it isn’t my original e-ring. I still have my original which is a 1.16 mrb.

What a great dilemma! :D My personal rule is: "If you don't LOVE it, sell it." Like you, I've kept my original engagement ring, which I'll never let go of for sentimental reasons. But every other engagement-type ring that I've acquired is subject to regular reviews where I ask myself, "Do I still LOVE this ring?" Liking the ring is not good enough. For something this expensive, it needs to be love if I'm going to keep it.

In your situation, since your sweet hubby has put the ball in your court, I say just enjoy life with the rings. See what it's like to have 3 gorgeous e-rings to choose from. Observe your feelings toward each one. You may find, for example, that you sometimes crave the 2-carat. On other days, you crave your 4-carat. Or maybe your passion for the 2-carat will begin to wane as you get more attached to your 4-carat...or vice versa. My 2 cents: Live with the rings and enjoy them...if you fall out of love with one, that would be the time to consider selling. 8)

I kept mine so I can make a pair of earrings.

If I didn’t think I would wear it and I didn’t want to make it into a pendant or find a match for earrings, I would definitely sell it and put the money towards something else.

I've had the same dilemma for several years. I love my original e-ring. It's a bright, sparkly OEC with beautiful facets in a custom setting that is TDF and very comfortable to wear. I traded in a vintage ring that I had prior to getting engaged to offset the cost. I debated a long time about wearing that as my wedding ring but wanted to start my new marriage off with a "new" ring.

Then a few years later I got a hankering for a higher? lower? colored AVR and planned to sell my original. My original is an M. My AVR is a J. They are both about the same size at slightly above 1.5 ct. I adore my AVR and it's set in a gorgeous BGD solitaire with pave and I have a matchy matchy band to go with. Since I was a little girl I have dreamed of a matchy matchy wedding set and here it is. (although I never dreamed I would be able to afford a "gasp" diamond)

When I got ready to list the original, my husband had a change of heart and encouraged me not to sell it. Which was okay with me because it just feels right on my finger if that makes any sense. If I'm having a bad day or feeling sad or insecure I put that ring on my finger and instantly feel like everything will be okay. So I alternated rings. It seems a bit excessive to me, but I think it's the best choice. I also think I'd lose a ton of $$$ if I sold the original. (I also kept in my mind that I still regretted trading in my other vintage ring and didn't want to repeat that)

Here's where the story gets stupid crazy. I bought a art deco setting from LAD that would hold a 3ct OEC and had a moissy put in it. I thought maybe I'd find an OEC for our 20th or something. I have a love hate relationship with the moissy. Love it in some lighting, hate it in others. I would casually dream about having a 3ct one day and would look for one when I was in the mood. I casually looked for over a year. I was determined to find the one to rule them all. And when I least expected it (and could least afford it) the perfect OEC appeared on Grace's website. So I bought the 3 ct and fully intended to get rid of either my original ring or my AVR. I also planned to set the 3ct in the art deco setting from LAD. But the diamond was just screaming to be set in a simple solitaire. I thought the solitaire would be temporary and I think about setting the diamond in the art deco setting often, but just can't bring myself to pull the trigger - yet. Sometimes I think I should sell that art deco setting and let someone else appreciate it but I'm afraid I'd regret that too.

I've been debating for 2 or 3 years now about which ring to sell. I've tried to convince myself to sell both. I still alternate but sometimes the 3ct is too much so it's nice to have something still blingy but more subtle. I love all three of them. I wear the 3 ct more, but I do alternate and wear them all.

I'm sorry this is getting so long. So the vintage ring that I traded in? I've looked high and low for something similar. I've sold several pieces of jewelry but I've never felt regret like that. I even had a setting made from pictures and put a sweet transitional diamond in it. It's just not the same though. And yesterday I saw that same vintage ring for sale on LT. I thought I was going to have a heart attack trying to log into my account and contact the seller. It's ridiculous how happy I am to have it on it's way back!!!! (it's the .5ish vintage OEC) :kiss2::appl::kiss2::dance::love:

So in my mind I think the logical thing to do is sell the first ring and buy the upgrade. But my heart says keep both if you love them both and can.

From a financial standpoint I'm a cautionary tale and definitely a diamond hoarder. I'm a happy mess though.

A girl after my own heart! I love the story! Im glad you got your ring back too! Is it the one in the filigree? I looked at your threads and see you had two rings that were .5 . Also what is LAD?

I want to see a pic of your setting with the Moissy too! I couldn’t find it in threads. That 3ct is AMAZING.

You know I love both these rings so I'd probably keep both & stack them while lounging at home just because that's sort of what I do sometimes anyway. (I mean I gather all my beautiful things & wear my most fabulous items all at once when I'm having a not-so-good day.)

However, what I would do if I were you is to keep the 2ct stone & surround it with colored gemstones to make a stunning RHR. Imagine the possibilities!

Another way I look at it is that I doubt I'll be buying any more larger diamonds because it's hard for me to rationalize that large of a purchase. So my old e-ring diamond is probably my only likely chance of having a good sized diamond besides my e-ring diamond.

To me, that big difference between what I'd probably have to pay for another diamond and what I'd probably get for a secondhand diamond figures in too. (It seems to me that even when people do get a good price for their secondhand diamond, it's often on commission through a third party vendor, so that's not the amount they're getting).

Now I'm wondering why I feel like talking you into keeping it. LOL.

I didn’t need to sell my ring..I knew it would have given me anxiety to have it sitting there in my jewelry box... I felt like I was cheating on her..I still miss Libby. She was special..I’m glad that I did it though. Some girl or guy will be very happy with her.

@Mreader It’s an ACA!! I’ve got about 4 weeks til it’s in my hands. I‘m a bit nervous, as it’s an H, but by going down in color I added another .50ct! :P2 I’ll post it when I get it!!

I do this all the time! Sometimes I change rings multiple times a day.

I love hearing all of these ideas :)

It is the one with filigree. LAD was another person that sold antique jewelry back in the day.

Sounds like we are simpatico! This is what I love about PS.

I’m a cave troll, and can’t bear to part with anything remotely sparkly. I would keep it! I go through my jewelry box and touch all my goodies and pick them up and look at them and pet them and tell them what good little sparklies they are, then I put them back. Call me crazy but I would never get rid of anything (especially nice!). Maybe it stems from growing up somewhat low / middle income, mixed with the fact that I have terrible family who stole most of the valuables my grandparents have. I am INSISTENT that I will have “something for everyone” when it comes to passing down stuff. So even if I don’t *love* something now, I still keep it. But I know that’s not the norm :)

I would sell just because they are both old euros. If they were more different; I would keep it. Perhaps sell and use the funds towards a different cut.

With hindsight, I would love to have kept my ER after my divorce, and re-purpose the stones into another piece of jewellery like a bracelet or necklace that I could wear.

However, I needed the money for relocation purposes, hey ho!

DK :confused2:

Yes I would do it all over again.

If I am not wearing the original ER there is no sense (for me) in keeping it. I am only sentimental about the people I love and not so much about things (with a few exceptions).

So I would rather sell it or give it away to someone who will enjoy wearing it and use that money for something I would enjoy or to save for something else.

I am not in your position yet @Mreader but I would keep the 2ct if I could. LOL I am already talking to my partner about upgrading too! Fingers crossed.. I might have to wait about 7 years hahaha.

What I would do if money were no issue and I did not have to sell my ring to fund the upgrade. I would reset my current ring (maybe 3 stone or cluster), or even pendant. If you actually love the 2ct then it's worth keeping in the family :) maybe a daughter or future DIL could inherit the piece.

I also second what Elizat said about the GIA cert - depends on how much trouble you would like to go through to sell it. If you can get what you want and it's simple enough then it's fine. But sometimes it's more trouble than what it's worth - and also waiting for someone to buy it :)

Fingers crossed for you!!!! And btw hope all is going well with bébé!

Agreed - just wondering if I will wear it. I alternate a lot. Though maybe not so much w the new one bc it’s so incredible!

I voted other. Wait until November and see how much you wear it! If you don't wear Chippy, rehome him/her to a new loving home :D

Many of you know about my upgrade (woot!) from a 2 ct to an almost 4 ct oec. Well DH must have had a brain transplant because now he says that I can keep my other ring if I want to (we have gone from "I need to sell my 2ct before even thinking of upgrading" to "upgrade now and sell later" to "meh, keep it if you want to". He even said if I do decide to sell, that I can put it toward another piece of bling. I feel very fortunate. I know many of you have upgraded and some of you have kept and some have sold. Would love to hear what you would do as well as your stories :) I am posting a pic of both rings. I am torn because I love my 2ct, but I wonder how much I will wear it now that I have the new one. So I wonder if I should sell for a future bling project (like a big 5 stone would be nice) or maybe convert to a pendant, or what. Also I do have my very first e-ring which I wouldn't sell for sentimental reasons.

Pics of rings.

@Mreader first if all congrats on your holy grail. She is truly extraordinary.
Second, I think I’m half in love with your husband myself ;))
Now. As to your dilemma,
No right or wrong. So I would take your time and give it a good think.
I ended up keeping my original e-ring.
But she does just sit there.
I visit her.
I was ok with selling her a while back but I think deep down I would’ve regretted it.
I wore her everyday for 20 years so there is that history we have together.
And after reading everything here and everyone’s responses I think I will reset her!!!!
Ooooh…a new project! Yippee!

So all in….I would take your time.

not that i am engaged sigh
but i would keep it for sentimental reasons
i have two ring fingers after all
if it were very small id have it resized for a pinky ring and wear it beside the new boulder sized diamond

@Daisys and Diamonds @Efleon thanks - the 2ct though isn’t my original e-ring. So it doesn’t have the sentimentality. But my original is an mrb and I reset it. I almost wish I didn’t bc I rarely wear it. In a way I wish that I had “saved” that reset idea for this 2ct bc it is different enough from the new ring (it’s the octagonal setting on the right).

Anyway I like the idea of an eventual cluster or something but given this upgrade I won’t be spending lots of $ on a project for a looooooooooooong time lol.

Famous last (bling) words?

If it was the same type of ring (for instance a round solitaire), I’d sell or turn one into something different, like a three stone, bangle, pendant, etc. If it were two different shaped stones, I would definitely keep both.

So personal. I’ve talked to countless people. It completely differs depending on how you wear rings. Some people like to change it up and wear different rings all the time. Some people like me stay with one ring. And there are other things I want and can use the funds. And even others enjoy collecting, and others are sentimental. Some keep to repurpose. I thought about making studs. So it depends entirely on your personal goals and situation.
