Possible to make Sapphire Silk less noticeable?

I purchased a sapphire that's poorly cut as it has a too big window, but that doesn't bother me as it's worth recutting. The sapphire has a lot of silk inclusions so I wonder if there's any type of cut that are able to make the silk less noticeable? Less facets? More facets? At this time the sapphire's a mixed pear cut. I want the sapphire to remain a pear, I just want to improve it. Some advices?

I would contact a cutter who foes recuts. Jerry at Gemart is probably a good bet. I am on my phone right now and can't post his info.

Cabachon is the only cut which hides silk :D

I thought that to a degree, heating a stone could help dissolve rutile silk. However this is moot if your stone has already been heated; or if it is unheated, you may likely change the hue of the stone in the process of heating.

It's unheated, 7.5 carat, orangish pink.

So there's not possible to recut a gemstone in any way it will make the inclusions less noticeable?

Checkerboard helps a lot.

Aside from heating (bad-bad-bad :-)

Checkerboard might work.

The only thing I can think of is a checkerboard cut, cabochon or heating.

Do you know about any company/person that heat gems for a customer?

I know of several lapidaries who have their own ovens but I do not think they are open to heating an "outside" stone. In any case, I'm also not sure how high of a temperature their ovens go up to and I don't know whether you'll need it to be heated higher or lower than 1000 degrees C.

Limited - a 7.5 ct. unheated orange-pink sapphire could be worth quite a bit (think nice used car), even with a window and some silk. Some of the world's most expensive gems have windows, and noone complains about those. Heating will reduce the value of a sapphire, sometimes by as much as half. Also, the color may change. - since it sounds like you already have one of the most desirable colors of all, I would caution you against heating. Also, we would be able to give much better answers if we had some pics of this sapphire

Limitedgems: what kind of lighting are you using to take your photos? Is the background white? You might try and use a neutral color like a grey for your background and take photos in indirect outside light. A hand shot would also help to determine how noticeable the silk is.

I say this because right now, the stone appears brownish and I know incandescent light often does that on white backgrounds...

So much better color! I'm wondering if the inclusions will make it glow in direct sun - now that would be something to see!

Others can chime in, but where the silk (rutile) is located you would lose a lot of weight to eliminate it. I think it is attractive, in that the rutile looks interesting rather than a single inclusion that is offputting. I would maybe just work with the stone in setting it (organic, flowing setting with no diamonds) rather than trying to make it something it is not. It almost reminds me of a sunstone.

I'm with Part Gypsy. I tend to like rutile inclusions; they give a stone personality. Ephsea's point is excellent: heating could change the color of your sapphire & may not help a lot with the rutile. If you put it in a setting with a closed basket, the window should look better -- possibly yellow or rose gold, depending on the RL hue of the stone. It's a nice color, worth enjoying.

Been in contact with a recutter today. I were told the gemstone would lose about 10-20% of the carat if I want to close the window. Weren't much they would be able to do about the inclusions. Unless I wanted a total recut stone. I will most likely get used to the inclusions, but I think I want to close the window. Ending up with a 6 carat.

That sounds like a good option. That's one thing I like about colored stones, is that they each have their own "personality". And 6 carat stone is still very impressive!

Yes, I do agree. A 6 carat with a better cut is maybe even more impressive. :loopy:

Please post pics once the recut is done, I'd love to see it.

Will do, I'm shipping the stone to Jerry next week.
