We are watching the evening national news. Parts of SoCal look like hell on earth. Fires out of control due to 100 mph winds . People , trying to evacuate, are stuck in gridlock traffic and abandoning their cars and dragging suitcases, children and pets in their attempts to get away from the fires. It’s just unbelievably sad and frightening and just plain unreal. I’m a Calif. native. It was a beautiful place to grow up. If you believe in the power of prayer, please pray for the winds to die down so that the firefighters can get these infernos from Hell under control.

Keeping everyone affected in my prayers. Praying the winds die down and the firemen can extinguish the fires asap

I hate when the weather is like this. It really makes me anxious, especially with so much wilderness around me, plus careless people. So many freaking fires when we get these winds. :cry2:

Thinking about those affected by these terrible fires. Hoping everyone (and their pets) get out safely. Fingers are
crossed for minimal/no property damage. This is horrific! Stay safe everyone!

Edit...Rain Gods, please send Rain!

A couple of the fires started late last night. I grew up in one of the areas; we have family & friends there. I don't know how everyone gets notified to evacuate late at night- my mom's BFF who is in her 90s only has a landline and I'm sure her power was out. Ugh. So scary and the winds were really whipping! :cry2:

It's horrific. I'm hoping the winds die down and the rain comes and no more lives are lost.

what is your air quality like Kenny ?
i hope you or your husband dont have asthma or other repertory illness :(2
and i hope you live like way the other side of town
take care Kenny

sometimes in the morning i lie in bed and wonder what terrible things have happened to the world while we were sleeping
this is so horrible, i just read that gusty winds are forcast

do they get rain this time of year?
is this fire season ?

When I was growing up, and as an adult in So.Cal., we got Santa Ana winds in the winter. We also got rain. .Cool, wet weather was Christmas weather. Now it seems like they just get the winds from hell and no rain, and fire season is ALL THE TIME. What’s happening is horrific and heartbreaking.

Sending dust - I heard on the news about how bad it is!

Thanks for asking. =)2

The air's not bad here.
We're south of the fires and have no respiratory issues.
These fires are in parts of So. Cal, that are much more expensive.

Actually (as with most "winter" days) all our windows R wide open to let the glorious California sun pour in its heat ... Currently ...

We don't even smell the smoke here.
The Santa Ana winds blow the smoke out over the ocean to the west.

Fires have been the natural cycle here for millions of years.
The problem is people want to build houses in the most fire-prone places, canyons, hilltops, where natural vegetation is abundant.
Why?
Because of the beautiful abundance of nature and the views.

I never thought I'd say this, but right now I feel "sorry" for insurance companies.
But of course premiums will quickly skyrocket for these areas, so they'll get their billions back.

There's no way the uber-rich are going to abandon these beautiful locations and move down here to the flatlands with us low-life riffraff.
They will rebuild ... but in time nature will retaliate.

So it goes. giphy-2761708483.gif

I heard some insurance companies were canceling policies in California months before :(

I feel so for everyone affected. My heart hurts. Praying this is under control very soon

They will rebuild, and in time nature will retaliate.

And yes it’s not just limited to California . They also keep rebuilding in Nantucket too. In very risky areas. I imagine all over this happens. I understand the desire but it’s a terrible situation :(

Human-imagined magical supernatural powers don't do anything, other than make people feel they have the power to do things they can't do.

On the other hand, firefighters, fire trucks, and aircraft dropping fire retardant actually DO something ... Work!
No pretending needed.

There's evidence.

The city’s major wildfires have spread, and a new one started overnight in Hollywood Hills. It threatened a wealthy neighborhood and landmarks synonymous with America’s self-image — the Hollywood sign, the Walk of Fame. Streets near Hollywood filled with traffic as helicopters raced through the sky. (Track the fires with these maps.)

The wildfires have killed at least five people; forced tens of thousands to evacuate; and charred entire neighborhoods of every socioeconomic status, from the scenic West Coast to the inland suburbs. “It wasn’t just that the place was in flames. It was that it seemed to be in flames everywhere at once,” The Times’s Shawn Hubler wrote of the city.

Below, we explain how these fires became a major crisis so quickly.

What makes these fires different

While Southern Californians are used to wildfire, these blazes are a shock in three key ways:

  • Location: Wildfires are normally contained to Southern California’s dry hills. These fires have burned out of control and spread into the city, and two are the most destructive in Los Angeles’s history. The flames are visible for miles down the city’s famous coastline, a half-moon crescent of sand that is usually domed by blue sky. “I’ve lived here my whole life and never seen anything like this,” a 71-year-old resident said.
  • Extreme winds: Intense winds, known as Santa Anas, have spread these fires into the city. The winds also made it unsafe for aircraft to douse the flames from above, which slowed firefighting. Santa Anas are notorious for aiding California wildfires in the fall, after the landscape dries in the summer. But the impact is often less dramatic by winter, when the hills are more moist from rain. That hasn’t been true this year.
  • Dry conditions: It hasn’t rained much in Los Angeles for months. As a result, the fires spread more quickly across a dry landscape. Water supplies were also limited. Firefighters sprayed water faster than tanks could be refilled, and hydrants ran dry. Some residents stood and watched as their homes burned away. On Sunset Boulevard, one man fell to his knees and begged firefighters to save his house. Without water, they were helpless to stop the flames.
"

Firefighters are continuing their battle, but more destruction is expected.

President Biden canceled a trip to Italy, in which he was supposed to meet the Pope, to coordinate the federal response to the wildfires. The White House said it had arranged for Navy helicopters to join the firefighting effort.

Biden also appeared alongside Gavin Newsom, California’s governor, at a fire station in Santa Monica. “We’re prepared to do anything and everything, as long as it takes, to contain these fires and help reconstruct, make sure we get back to normal,” Biden said.

Forecasters warned that extreme fire danger would continue for at least another day, and millions of people in Southern California remain under fire warnings — which have heightened anxiety across the region.

The fires have “merged into a kind of mega-catastrophe for Southern Californians,” Shawn wrote. “Ash, smoke, wind and flames carried the heart-stinging realization, which spread like a contagion, that a new and less manageable landscape was on the horizon.”

Missy, Thank you for these updates. I know that there are so many sad things happening around the world but my heart breaks a little more with each bit of new news about So.Cal. I know that , in many cases, people are barely escaping with their lives. I pray that they are able to save their animals and get out in time.

I am so scared for all the animals. Yes I of course am concerned for the humans but the animals are most in my mind...I fear people are leaving them behind :( not to mention the wildlife

HI:

Surreal and just plain horrific. Praying for everyone and everything.

I've been a wreck. I know far too many people impacted, and every new fire brings more anxiety. The news is showing neighborhoods I've been familiar with my entire life. DH's cousin lost her home, and it was her childhood home, so everything she ever had was there. :cry2: There are so many stories like this. These fires have upset me more than the ones that have burned a mile from my house.

Then the fire in the Hollywood hills started, which is where DD lives and works, as do family friends. It's too much. This is such an unusual fire season, and those winds were crazy!!!! I can't remember a time when we've had multiple major fires here. We're still under a high fire threat. :cry2:

its half of our front page news today so our thoughts are definatly in California

i just read this in my home town paper about a local house fire
and i hope that the people who have lost homes in California find something in the ashes

The news about the fires just gets worse & worse here in the UK. Truly horrific. I am thinking about everybody affected & hope our PS community is staying safe.

In case anyone is concerned, I had shipped something to DK before news of the fires and have heard that it arrived and that they are all safe.

If only they would get rain. I heard on the news that they really haven't had any rain since March. How can that be? It's horrible.

Such a horrible tragedy for so many - just heartbreaking. Heard tonight that they could have been started accidentally, intentionally or by sparks from electric lines. It is just so overwhelming for so many.

I watched a news special last night and the bravery of all involved is amazing. All grateful to have gotten out with their lives. And the firefighters not giving up..some there since the fires began with no respite. The firefighters are all heroes. The homeowners they interviewed all said they will rebuild but really not sure what will happen because the extreme wind prediction for the future is not good, This does not seem like a one off event. Praying the fires get under control and the pickup of the winds this weekend does not make it worse

It's mind boggling to think about how monumental the task is to get those communities rebuilt. We're almost 4.5 years out from the wildfire that swept through my area and there are people who still don't have permanent homes and who are still dealing with insurance issues. The scope of our disaster, 2500 homes and 600 business lost, pales in comparison.

Same here with regards to super storm Sandy. There are still homes in our area in the process of being rebuilt and homes that were sadly abandoned. I can’t fathom how the Californians affected are all going to be able to rebuild in a timely fashion And super storm Sandy was nothing compared to what those poor people in California are going through:(

As a Country that also knows bushfires and their impact my heart goes out to those affected.
In Australia we have more bush so our losses often involve larger areas and more native flora and fauna but less buildings. We have also had significant loss of human life for varying reasons.
However the sheer scale of these Californian fires is horrifying and mind boggling. Thousands of houses, thousands of lives uprooted and turned to ash.
The winds beyond belief, there was no way anyone could contain those fire fronts or reduce their spread and speed of movement. Thank God the loss of human lives is relatively modest, though one life is one too many, but all those memories, all those treasures and precious possession, gone, completely gone.
Sending hugs and hope to those affected. Life will go on, you can rebuild. It won’t ever be the same, nor will you after your loss, but life can and must go on.
Take care.
