I was wondering what all your thoughts were on proposing without appraising my ring first? I have bought the ring, but I'm awaiting the arrival of my GIA cert (I only have a faxed copy) so I cannot get an appraisal done until the original comes.

The stone has it's certificate number lasered onto the girdle, so I'm pretty sure the dealer would not take the chance to give me a laser inscribed cert. with a stone not inscribed???

I'm happy with all the numbers, stats on the certificate (no crown/pavillion angles/percentages) but everything else points towards an Ideal stone. Plus, in person the stone is beautiful.

Any advice? Should I go ahead and propose or wait for an independent appraisal?

Why on earth would you wait to propose for an appraisal ? If the stone looks as good as you say and as long as you've had your fiance properly appraised, then I say why wait ? You, have had her appraised haven't you ?

Good advice. I came in at well above my appraisal value. I think I was labeled somewhere between irreplacable and priceless

Upkeep was a little on the high side but pretty much a good deal if I do say so myself.

I am a big fan of professional independent appraisals. Ideally, this should be done before final purchase of any major piece of jewelry. You should have it insured the second you have the ring in your possession. A good appraisal with realistic valuations will allow you to not over (or under) insure you piece.

However, a proposal to the love of your life should not be delayed by this. If the time is now – then propose now – just get the appraisal and insurance as soon as possible.

The 2 things are absolutely separate! By all means, get the ring appraised and insured, etc, etc. But propose when the right moment comes. I would hope that your fiance couldnt care less about whether the ring is super expensive or worth heaps more than you paid or whatever. In fact, you could argue that the appraisal is kind of pointless since you hope that she will never need or want to sell it (except for insurance purposes, in case you get burgled or mugged or something).

My husband bought my engagement ring before we really got into gems in a big way (he had worked on the mine since he was a kid but this was before we took it over and started to get involved in the whole process). I know that my ring wasnt exorbitantly expensive - we picked it out together and I wanted to get a sapphire but it''s probably is not one of ours (could be from anywhere as it was just out of the local jeweller''s shop) but it means the world to me because of *what it means*. I work in the kind of job where you probably shouldn''y wear rings all the time (very hands on in the dirt kind of work) but I wear it always because it is just as important to me as my wedding ring. After over 11 years of marriage, it is starting to get a bit worn around the edges but I would never take it off. One of these days, I would like to wear one of our own sapphires - a really good one set in a nice ring or something - that would be great but it still wont mean as much as my engagement ring.

So, go ahead and propose!
