PS Mommy Thread-Newborn to 12 months!

We did start DTD at 6 weeks pp, but that''s just becasue DH couldn''t keep his hands off me. We used condoms, and at 14 weeks pp I got the IUD put in. I was on the pill for 7 years before we started TTC, but i didn''t really want to go back on it, and was worried I would forget with my new mommy brain all scattered. The IUD didn''t hurt or anything, I haven''t had any cramps or other side effects other than the spotting. No periods either, and I did actually start a period a few days before I had it put in. It could be like this for 3 months, so I''m just going to wait it out and see if it stops. At least with the IUD, as soon as you have it removed you and start TTC. It took me 8 months off the pill to get knocked up last time, so that was a big plus if we decide to have another baby.

I was on the mini pill when I was BFing. I think it took like 10 weeks before we DTD. Can''t remember. I was scared.

Diva, so sorry about the blood clot but glad they caught it!

I also have a Mirena. And I LOVE it. So easy and it was painless for me to have put in. No spotting, nothing.

We''re using condoms. Hormonal BC does a number on my system, and I can''t read my body''s signs at the moment. Is anyone using FAM? I keep having creamy CM but a low closed cervix, and I''ve had EWCM a couple of times with a low closed cervix. Not used to that. So we''re playing it safe. Maybe I should get out my copy of TCOYF and actually read the post-partum sections.

DH flies to Virginia tomorrow and the interview''s on Friday.

Diva - sorry about the blood clot! Yikes! I''m glad you''re okay.

TV- we wanted to wait the recommended 2 years, but we''ve been watching it so far figuring that he''s not aware enough of it for it to be bad. This may be rationalization on our part, not sure. But he''s starting to stare at it. He''s staring at it right now (DH and SIL are watching it.) And I''ve been wondering if we should start turning it off if he''s awake.

Paci - he isn''t wild about it and we havent pushed it. He''s found his fist, which he prefers. Although an adult finger is better than the first, and the breast is better still that in his mind.

Not sure if this has been posted but LaJobi Recalls Bonavita "Cabana" drop side cribs due to entrapment and strangulation hazards and Babi Italia Pinehurst and Bonavita Hudson drop side cribs due to risk of entrapment and suffocation

BC -- I was on mini-pill until the breakthrough bleeding drove me crazy.

Now the babies are all the birth control we need.
20.gif

dreamer-I used the mini-pill for the year I nursed Jake.

I used Cerazette - mini-pill with a longer window for taking it, and that has a side-effect of no periods at all. However, it made me feel awful, upped my migraines and gave me acne... I gave it a go for a year as my GP kept saying it should settle down and then chucked it. Since then DH and I were using a combination of condoms and being too tired to be bothered as BC.

Not sure what I will do once we get back to DTD - which considering the HUGE number of stitches I had and our DD''s sleeping habits is not going to be anytime soon. We don''t want another one (probably ever but for definite for at least 5-6 years) so I''m not sure what I will come up with as any form of hormonal BC is not an option. I''d be happy to try FAM especially since I have a textbook cycle, but I''ve always felt with that, that you have to be prepared for an ''oops'', which we would not be. I don''t want to consider anything permanent at this stage just in case we do change our minds.

Diva - How horrible and frightening for you. I''m glad they caught it quickly and are treating you. Hope it goes away fast for you.

Couple of questions from me...

a) I''m a bit worried about Daisy''s hearing - I put her in her cot this morning so I could take a shower and get dressed. She wasn''t asleep, but just lay there talking to the ceiling and kicking her blankets around. When I''d finished I came over to get her and started talking to her - she didn''t notice me at all or show any reaction (she was looking sideways and not at me at all), so I tried clapping my hands really loudly and again no reaction at all - didn''t flinch, didn''t turn her head, nothing. I tried it again at various points during the morning and again nothing. I''ve noticed this a few times over the last week or so, but nothing as definite as this morning.

Am I worrying for nothing and babies of nearly 4 weeks just don''t react to noise or did all of yours? She had her hearing checked in hospital (the test they do when they are asleep) and the results were fine, but I find this complete lack of reaction a bit worrying.

b) How do you get a baby to go to sleep? She was up yesterday for EIGHT hours solid - I fed her, changed her, cuddled her, rocked her, walked around a bit, fed her some more, put her down to sleep and left her to scream for 10 minutes, bathed her, winded her, put her over my knee and patted her and so on multiple times and she would not sleep at all. I even gave her a bottle of breast milk, and a bottle of formula in paranoia that she wasn''t getting enough from me and even that didn''t do the trick. DH came home from work and walked around with her in the baby carrier - she didn''t cry at all, but kicked him and whinged if he stopped walking at all.

If I bf her, she will get that whole sleepy drunk look, but the minute I pick her up to put her to sleep the laser eyes open wide and I have to start again!

I eventually got her to drop off at 10.30pm and decided that I would go to bed as well and get what sleep I could, and after 10 minutes she was awake AGAIN. This went on all night for the second night in a row - I''m shattered and I can''t understand why she isn''t. She''s finally dropped off at 3.30pm having been up since 10.00am.

I am going nuts... any suggestions of things to make them sleep at this age.

Does the car or the stroller make her sleepy Pandora? Maybe take her for a walk? Or a swing? I''m sorry she''s not letting you sleep!

I wish - she screams blue murder in the car (TWO HOURS non-stop when we took her to see my parent) or even just being put in the carseat.

I'll try the stroller idea. We don't have a swing...YET... but the thought is interesting me fast.

Thanks for the suggestions!

ETA: Thanks Neatfreak - off to read reviews on bouncy/vibrating chairs. Any recommendations?

Pandora: Do you have a bouncy/vibrating chair? It''s a godsend. And what we did when one of our boys was having trouble (i.e., waking up when we moved him) we put him in the bouncy, got down on the floor, and fed him a bottle right there. He''d fall asleep and we wouldn''t have to move him. Worked like a charm for those days when anything would startle them awake.

Sorry about being MIA ladies-trying to get my prelim paper done so I can become a dissertator by fall in my Ph.D. program!

Pandora, I mentioned in another thread (I think it was the worry thread) that when Amelia was a few weeks old, I asked the moms here how much eye contact their babies gave them. I had Amelia on my lap and I was waving my arms in front of her, singing, and try to get her attention and she was just in zone land. I remember she didn''t even flinch. So in Amelia''s case, she was fine.

Some babies like bouncy chairs, some like swings. Amelia hated the swing when I first put her in it. But then I figured if I swaddled her (I just strapped her in on top of the swaddle), put blankets around her to get her snug and used a paci, it might work and it did. As you can probably realize, I tried to make it as close to the "womb" feel as possible. It worked EVERY time, to the point I had to stop using it because I was relying on it too much. The first few weeks, she napped a lot in it.

I think what Daisy is going through is normal. Amelia was up one day for 9 hours. I wanted to shoot myself.

Thirding the swing suggestion. For about a month, that was the only thing that soothed my high-octane boy.

Just a quick check in before my mother gets here (yea! more stories!) -

DH cut L''s hair.

L''s hair is like a chia pet''s, only straight. We''d been mentioning that it was "shaggy" over the ears. Next thing I knew, DH walks up to me and said he''d taken the plastic clippers to my mellow baby. I look and my little one now has a buzz cut.

"Sure, he looks handsome, but I missed the milestone first hair cut!" I said to DH, who then proceeded to open his hand and reveal a ball of hair.

"Here, do you want a lock for the scrapbook?"
41.gif

Yeah, I want a hairball keepsake.

Good thing L looks adorable...but so grown up now. I told DH he may NOT touch J''s hair. J really only has one tuft of hair right at the top of his head. It curls straight up. It amuses me.

Sorry for all the me-centered posts of late. Life here is nuts and next week my brother is getting married.

And no, I''m not in the wedding. His bride only wanted girls from her side as bridesmaids and guys from his side as groomsmen. Oh, except her brother. Bro and I are close, and he was in my wedding. This doesn''t sit well with me or my sister.

Oops, did I let that slip out?

I wouldn''t worry about Daisy''s hearing just yet. Up until 6 months, M never responds to us when we talk to her or call out to her. DH was worried, and our pedi said she is busy taking in the world and you are just not interesting enough for her right now. He said it was very common. Usually by around 6 months, they should respond.

Try a swing or bouncy chair for sleep.

Contraception
We had always used condoms b/c I don''t want to go on any hormone birth controls. Plus pills are expensive. LOL.

O my I have missed a lot!

Pandora- I sooooo understand u!...I second and third the swing!...I am kicking myself for not having ordered them yet...I keep looking for a good one etc and they are only online.
Jon was up from 8pm til245am! And we couldn''t get him to stop crying...I knew smthg was bothering him and I figured it was gas ..so I gave mylicon ..my MIL says she noticed he cries when peeing but that''s total BS...urgh can''t stand her!...doc confirmed gas today and said to give mylicon about 3 times a day after feeding. And I switched them both to enfamil nutramigen formula...doc says doesn''t matter but I think its better to digest and for gas....MIL still thinks doc is wrong LOL...
He ok''d the circumcision so I have to get it done...urgh...stalling!

Jackie is much better after the pedialyte and formula switch.

Jas-too funny about the hair :)..pictures..pictures!

Neat- im gonna say it again...dunno how u and jas do it! Im poooooped, sis is and dh especially!

Pandora, the swing saved my life. Not sure how I would have survived without it. We even had two. T spent MANY a nights/naps sleeping in them. She did not like the bouncy seat. Can you borrow one from a friend to see if Daisy likes it?

That would be key. They are expensive and take up a lot of room if the kid doesn''t, and it''s a pain to return once assembled.

Also they make travel swings (one of our''s was) so think I remember you saying space is limited. That could be an option. T didn''t seem to care if she was in the full size or travel one.

hi ladies!! This is my first post in the mommy thread! Lex is now a week and one day old, and other than not wanting to sleep at all at night, things are going as well as can be expected. And he is the NOISIEST sleeper EVER!! My goodness, he just doesn''t sleep soundly much. He''s a wiggle worm!

Anyway, just wanted to dip my feet into the mommy pool

Here''s a pic from last night!

cdt, congrats! Somehow I missed you had your baby. I think ALL newborns are super noisy sleepers. I remember T would snore, fart, moan, etc...so funny but not when you are trying to sleep as well. Hope you get some rest.

Congrats cdt! And welcome to mommy-hood! My guy was really noisey too, we moved him to his crib at 4 weeks just so we could sleep!

Pandora, I would see about borrowing a swing or bouncy and testing them out on Daisy. We bought a travel swing for Kyle, it has the baby in a laying position, and he didn''t like it after the first few weeks. He likes to be upright, so I haven''t pulled it out in a month or two. It does fold up small though! Same thing with the bouncy seats. He LOVED the vibration, and it helped sooth him when he was grumpy before we figured out he was having lactose issues. He would fall asleep with the vibration on, and if I tried to turn it off he would wake up
8.gif
. I was worried about vibrating him too much, but after reading a few things online, it''s basically the same feeling as being in a car, and we don''t worry about taking the babies on car trips, so I let him vibrate a while
2.gif

Borrowing one seems a really good idea - space is an issue and if she hates it like she hates the carseat it would be a PITA getting rid of it again. She also likes to be upright - when she sleeps, she only sleeps well in the highchair which I have angled so she''s lying on a slant and can see everything.

DH saw our old neighbour this morning whose baby is 17 days older than Daisy. Apparently he was sitting in his bouncy chair contentedly gurgling at everyone. DH told her that I hate her already!
28.gif

My SIL is letting us borrow a vibrating bouncy seat that has a 45 degree angle instead of just lying flat. Kyle loves it. Maybe you kind find one similar? Then she could viibrate and be more upright
1.gif

It's similar to this one: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2265002, so you have an idea of the angle

I posted this on the pregannt thread, but then thought some of you may be interested:

I''m telling you bouncy chairs are the key to your sanity! And most of them are fairly upright too-ours let the little guys see quite a bit so they like it a lot.

Hi Mommies!
I'm finally coming up for air! Romeo is 11 days old, and doing really well. In fact, I feel badly posting because I know how many others are struggling right now (Pandora - thinking of you girl). Romeo, so far, is really a dream. I have him on a 2.5 hr feeding schedule during the day (I wake him to eat) so that he can get in his calories during the day, and then I demand feed at night. Demand for Romeo is not a lot - because he is a really good sleeper and would probably sleep 3-4 hrs minimum at a time if we let him.

He is now 7lbs 3 oz, so above birth weight. YEY! Middies are happy with his progress and naturally we are too.

I keep knocking on wood, because I know he can change at any time and that he may not be this little angel forever. I'm just enjoying it while it lasts.
37.gif

The crazy thing for me is how fast time is flying. I wake up, then...faster than I can say "pass me the burpcloth", it's night again! NUTS! Chores, visitors, planning his Baptism (we're doing it super-fast on July 5th before our families take off on holidays) and WRITING THANK YOU NOTES (!!!), and napping between feedings really make the days go fast. I totally see how some people find themselves still in their PJs at 5pm.

haha.

Anyways, that's our update!

Here is a cute pic of Romy having a play date with my BFFs 6 month old daughter. cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuties.

Squeee!!! Romy is scrumptious.
I could just eat him up.
He''s so teeny

Glad to hear that things are going dreamy for you.
More pictures of your little heartbreaker if you get the chance.

Mela, ooh too cute!

And ENJOY it. Hopefully it lasts, but I''ve been saying for awhile, almost all babies are pretty good for 2 weeks, and then all of the sudden they wake up and smell the coffee. It''s the most bizarre thing. Although, easy babies can definitely stay relatively easy (mine did). Perhaps it''s our patience that gets stretched thinner?
3.gif

aww thanks lili
9.gif
. Okay, by special request...here is one of him smiling. He smiles all the time. And he laughs while nursing. WEIRD! Middie didn''t believe me at first, and told me it was just gas, but then she tickled his chin and he smiled at her (dimple and all). She died! That was 5 days PP!!! Seriously insane. He''s a really happy boy. I don''t know what else to say?!
I feel really blessed and nervous to say these things out loud for fear of jinxing it.
