Hi everyone

I have my eye on a cab. I don't know what to do about setting it. The best option for me to minimise the cost would be to buy a semi mount from ebay and have it set locally. Are normal prong semi mounts suitable for cabs?

In general, cabochons need a different type of mount than a faceted stone. It also depends on whether the cab is flat bottomed or has some extra weight at the bottom. If the dome is high or it has a fat belly, you need to make sure the prongs are long enough to fold over to hold the cabochon. Setting it in a prong basket style setting also means that you have additional height to the overall ring (basket + cabochon sitting above basket).

and you can bezel it as well.........

If you win a mounting from one of the ebay Chinese vendors, I would tell them that you need extra long prong height. That might work, but then again, it's probably best if you have a very skilled jeweler do the work, even if its more expensive. Only they will see the actual stone and know how to modify the prongs and basket so that the gem is more secure.

TL is more daring than I; I'm not sure I would take the chance, with language barriers and distance, of an ebay vendor getting the dimensions right to make a setting with extra long prongs to fit your stone. :(sad That said, TL has gobs more experience than I, so there is that. :praise:

Thanks everyone for the reply. Sounds like custom work. The vendor can make a ring but I did not find their work beautiful. I shall have to post the stone to Somebody's Gotta Buy This Stone! I'm not planning on custom work for the time being.
Where is heart break icon when you need it?

Nah, I'm just lucky to have a really good jeweler who can make modifications to those ebay rings without charging a fortune. If you have a good jeweler, it helps. This is why I have purchased so many ebay settings, as they're very cost effective ways to set stones. Going custom is not an option for everyone.
