Hi There,
Just wanted some guidance on some old diamonds I have inherited.

I have 10 Piece of old European cut diamond approx. 42 cents each (G colour , VS2) should I just recut them to have better market value or sell like they are.

One of my friend (who is a jeweller) advised me to re-cut them.

- Anyone can provide me with rough estimate how much weight I might loose on each diamond during this process or is any there any other better way.

Thanking you all in advance.

Cheers,
Ryan

I would sell as is, there is a huge demand for old cut diamonds. I am sure someone would buy them for project stones!

Measure the total depth of the stones then we can figure out what would be the mm size of a well cut round from recutting,
However I know there is a market for antique stones and I wouldn't recut them , some people specialise in buying and selling old antiques.

Thanks for your reply Guys,

I won’t be able to advise that because they are fitted in a Necklace

Can you please roughly advise the percentage I might loose on each diamond.

Thanks again,
Ryan

Oh, pleease post pics!

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! DO NOT RECUT THOSE!

If you want to consign:
Please, send them to Grace: http://www.jewelsbygrace.com/

Or Erika: http://www.loveaffairdiamonds.com/

There is a HUGE demand for them.

If you want to sell them yourself:
You can even get them appraised by Neil Beaty (you'd send them to him) or David Atlas, and ask him to suggest a parcel price for them to you to sell outright on Diamond Bistro. And he can even take a few photos for you of them (for the appraisal) and then he could send them to you and you could use them for the listing.

Where are you located? Depending on where you are physically, there is more advice I can offer!

There are more options but I need more information from you.

You'll get more for them as old cuts. I PROMISE. ESPECIALLY if they REALLY are G color, because high color old cuts are rare!

Please don't recut them. It's SUCH a waste! Seriously EVERYONE has round brilliants. Why do we need more of those.

Good old cuts (assuming they are) are rare and SERIOUSLY in demand! Unless they are ugly and poorly cut, whoever told you get them recut is either an IDIOT or trying to scam you and tell you they are worthless so they can get them from you for less than they are worth!

That jeweler IS NOT YOUR FRIEND (or he's an idiot)!

Neal and David are not like other appaisers. They are independent and VERY knowledgeable about old cuts. If you want their information here it is:

Also you said they are a necklace. If the necklace is nice (please post pictures) you could sell it as a finished piece.

Hi Ryan, a lot of jewellers tend to be biased they know nothing at all about old cuts or the market there is for them, so the person is probably advising you to recut them so that they can buy them from you. You will lose a fair bit of weight and if they are high coloured like a G they are quite rare and worth more leaving them alone.

You need to take or send the piece to an appraiser like David Atlas. You might actually find the whole thing is worth more as a necklace rather than pulling it apart for the stones. Once you have a clear idea of what the stones are (size colour clarity and exact cut) then you can either try selling them yourself or the necklace yourself on Loupetroop which is free or DiamondBistro. Or if you feel uncomfortable doing this as Gypsy has stated send them to Erica - Love Affair Diamonds or Grace - Jewels By Grace, either can actually arrange to get the piece or the stones sent to David for you and they will sell it on your behalf.

Hi Ryan and welcome!

My thoughts are the same as the others, there is a huge demand for old cuts, understandably so! I would definitely agree with getting an appraisal first from someone like Neil or Dave, once you have their expert opinion, you will know best how to proceed. I think selling them as is shouldn't present any difficulties, an appraiser such as one of the gentlemen mentioned above will be able to give you an estimated valuation.

Unless they are really poorly-cut old stones, I'd say perhaps repolish them if the need it, but don't recut them. Repolish might not be worthwhile, though.

You will get much more selling the necklace as is over selling each individual OEC or even if recut as RBs (recutting fee PLUS carat weight loss).

YES, LEAVE THEM in the necklace!!! Do not recut. That would be crazy in diamonds that size anyway.

Erica and Grace are probably on their way to Las Vegas today. Not sure when they are returning but you can try contacting them early next week!

In the meanwhile, take some good close up pictures of the necklace. They will want to see it, and we'd love to see you post them here.

Actually, you might be able to sell it by posting it on LoupeTroop.com and then posting a thread in the Pre-loved section on this site:

Ryan,

You stated that your goal is to sell the diamonds, so consider that the primary reason to re-cut any style is to create greater light performance. Will a re-cut OEC have better light performance if cut to a MRB? Well, probably, but does that make it worth it? If you want to have a collection of well-cut MRB's, then it might be worth it, but if you want to sell them then you must look at market demand. Given current trends, Gypsy is giving good advice here. Have it appraised, as is, before you make this decision.
