Hi,

I am not a specialist in jewelry but i got interested by your question about the protection of rings that are made of gold and silver. So this is what i could find on the net:

Rhodium plating is just a method for the protection of silver jewels. As you can see on this article, the layer of rhodium is really thin. So the visual impact is also very low...

You will find here some samples and many photographies:

A lot of the OLDER pieces were rhodim plated, too....it used to state that.....then they got away from it, ans things tarnished really badly.....I am glad they will do that again.....all of my old (and they are pretty old) silver charms look fine...then I guess they started being cheap, and produced some pieces that got black very quickly....I think RP on silver is a good thing, then....

I have my some rhodium plated sterling and it still looks good after a few years.

It''s not just rhodium plating that works well. I''ve got a few silver pieces that have been platinum plated. They''re quite realistic looking and don''t tarnish either. I''m quite happy with the way they''ve worn too. I expect how well they wear depends on how thick the plating was to start with.

Don''t you hate to try to clean tarnished silver pieces???? I have purches several white gold chains to use with silver charms......can''t get that black out of fine silver chains!!!!!

What''s the purpose of nickle plating the silver Steve?

I have always plated directly onto silver.

It looks great, but most people see silver as cheap stuff and not worth the effort. The trick is not to burn the metal when your cleaning it.
