I’m hoping to have a new ring made soon. I want a cushion center (slightly elongated) and half moon side stones. Also open to cadillacs, epaulettes, trapezoids, or trillions for the side stones.

I’m looking in the 1.5ct to 2ct range for the center cushion. I will probably go with something in the GHI range, if not a bit warmer. I also know I want a cathedral setting in rose or yellow gold.

Does anyone have a ring similar to what I’m describing? I’ve found it a bit difficult to find inspo for this.

Also, any advice on shopping for a cushion? I plan to post here once I’ve narrowed my choices down some, but any tips would be helpful. I’ve never owned a cushion before. =)2

What shape will your cushion be? I really love the look of a north south, slightly rectangular cushion with trap side stones.

I’ve bought a few cushions, I’m certainly no expert, but here are the pointers I can give:

First and foremost, you need to see a cushion in person, you can’t buy them by the numbers like you can with rounds. So I would suggest either working with a local vendor who can pull stones in for you to see with your own eyes, or working with an online vendor who has a return policy that isn’t capped or too restrictive, and who is willing to pull stones and send you videos of them. Jon at Distinctive gem or Alex Parks are two I have worked with strictly online and I’ve been very pleased.

Second, isolate what kind of facets you want in a cushion. You can go old, chunky faceting style, or more modern styles, of which there are primarily two: cushion brilliant and cushion modified brilliant. All of these cuts behave differently and they all offer a different appeal. Cushion Modified are the ones with the crushed ice appearance, they lack the contrast offered in the other cuts, and the present a very different kind of sparkle and fire. I would watch videos on YT of all the different cushion cuts (and shapes!) to see which is most appealing to you.
The choice you make about the type of cushion cut you want will influence your side stone choices. For example most wouldn’t want to pair step cut side stones with brilliant cut cushions.

I want a slightly rectangular cushion. The ones I’ve gravitated to have ratios around 1.15, give or take some. I also know that I don’t want crushed ice.
I am hoping to have it set by Maytal Hannah, who has said that she’s able to source the side stones for me.
Thank you so much for all of this information! This is very helpful, and has given me a lot to consider.
