I was out in the back yard this morning and look what I found in my Rose of Sharon. It looked about ripe so I picked it.

Oh my! Hard to tell which is prettyer - the flower or the stone

After a little clean up this is how it turned out.

I found this one in the cabbage patch.

I just wish I could get a few more of these kind of seeds. They were from some weird experiment that went bad.

I was in the forest of tangerine tree''s and I decided to pick this one after I passed the flower patch and the cabbage patach.

I just couldn''t resist the oppurtunity, and since I can''t upload a pic in the galleries section..LOL.

What is the one you found in the cabbage patch and what is that pink thing that matches the flower? Is that a tourmaline of some sort or is it something else? They''re both nice, and I love how that pink one matches that flower so well.

They are both tourmalines. The color of the flower matched the stone so well I just had to take a picture. Is the stone you posted a picture of a spessartite? I can almost smell a citrus scent.

Thanks for the reply.

I thought that the first one was a pink tourmaline, and a very lovely one at that. I had to take a second look at the green one before I realized it looks like a mint green tourmaline. I really wanted a nice kelly green tourmaline or a tsavorite garnet for a mens ring until I found out about that orange stuff. My favorite stone is an emerald, but they''re way too expensive and usually not all that clean. I like chrome diopsides too, but again-it''s that 5th c called cash.
5.gif
I still wouldn''t mind having a nice green tourmaline or a chrome one pending the color though.

The picture of what I posted is in fact a spessartite. I do have my eyes though on 2 pieces of rough though from a local that are really clean pieces of rubelite tourmaline with some pink hues in it. Pending finances on this end, I might get at least one of them and I know a lapidary nearby that can cut it up into a big honking Portuguesse round.
10.gif
I might sell that if I ever do it, then again I am fearful I may go through all that and say forget that. LOL.

I figure if I get that rough, I can get around an 8 carat stone out of the one and somewhere between a 10 and 15 carat in the other. I have thought about just doing a large cushion cut with a Portugueese bottom too.
9.gif
I just have to wait though, but it would be nice if I could pull it off. LOL

In the meantime, I have plans for the spessartite and a pair of matched white sapphires is coming in.

That is a very nice looking spessartite garnet you posted. I have managed to aquire a few of them. They have all come from a web site that is also on the television. When I first started buying them they were priced right. Now the price is getting kind of crazy. I also like emeralds but I do not like the idea of getting the oil changed every 3000 miles and having to pay extra for that privlage.

Most of the stones I have I got a couple of years ago But now the prices have gotten to crazy. I see by your post in another thread that you are not too far from my part of the country. I am near Charleston S.C. Do you collect? Are you in the bussiness? Clean rubelite rough large enough to cut an 8ct or 13ct stone! I don''t think I would wait to long if it is of decent color. Doug

OOOHHHHH!!! That is awesome... I am going outside to check my backyard right now......

I did the same thing yesterday, MINE! I think it''s neat trying to match gemstones to other natural wonders..

This is the best I could come up with: an alexandrite nestled among "color change" California wine grapes

Hi Doug.
emsmile.gif

I am a few hours from you I suppose. I am not a professional by any means and in fact laid off. I am a student now, and I guess you might say that colored stones are more of an interest of mine than anything. I would love to collect these things, however due to financial constraints, I can''t. That is why I have to wait on that rough. I would like to get it in the hopes of selling it to someone after getting it cut and such, but that''s about it.

I think I might know which channel you''re referring to and I recall when I first learned of this material a year or so ago that it was by no means cheap. Sadly, that one I am showing you in the pic doesn''t look quite as brilliant in this cave of sorts I live in now. LOL. However, I did find a good light source that gives a much better idea as to it''s true color. Regardless, it''s a lovely stone.

I am not too found of a lot of treatments, and I have read that some jewelers have had issues with oiling and waxing emeralds and they advise against it. What exactly they were refering to, I have no clue.

Widget,

Do you have pics of it in different light sources?
21.gif
Those things are intriguing to me. Do you know what percent of color change that stone has?

Thanks.
emteeth.gif
I did have a small mishap with it and had to repolish the table, but you''d never know unless I told you. What is really awesome is when I took it somewhere to loupe it as I didn''t have a loupe at the time. All I could see was hot neon sunkist cola orange, and absolutely no inclusions at all anywhere in that stone.

Hi, jszweda...

I drove myself crazy when I first got this stone trying to capture the color change in a photograph. Below is the best I could get...and it's really not accurate. The "indoor" color (purple) is pretty right on, but the "outdoor" color is more green and less blue in real life.

The dealer I purchased the stone from didn't talk percentages regarding the color change. But he did grade this stone's c.c. as "excellent".

PS: This pic was taken long ago before the stone was set. It's just sitting on the mounting...

Hey Joe thanks for the reply. Sorry to hear about you being laid off but every crossroad we come to is a chance to do things better. Have you heard of color change garnet? I posted some pictures of mine in a thread called New Member about a week ago. Check it out I think you will find it interesting. As for spessartite being inexpensive. They are selling the stuff for more than double what I paid for mine two years ago. As to the tourmaline rough be cautious about investing your hard earned money in it unless you can afford to hold onto it for awhile. Sometimes willing buyers are hard to come by. Best of luck to you in the future. Doug

Widget that is an amazing alex. Thanks for the picture. Have you taken any pictures of your alexendrite in sun light? The reason I ask is when I try to photograph my c.c. garnet outside the stone looks nothing like I see it with my eye.

Widget,

I assure you there is more than likely many a jewler who would go gaga over that alexandrite. To see that amount of color change in a stone of that size and clarity is indeed something to be proud of. That''s a very significant and blatent color change. It has to be at the very least (and I am being conservative) an 85% color change if not more. I am being conservative on that, but nonetheless it''s impressive.

Thanks, you guys!

It''s great fun to play with...my granddaughters think it''s "magic"..

Hi Doug.

The lay off has been for over 3 1/2 years now coupled with some other circumstances I won''t get into. All I will say is so much for being a web developer.
5.gif

On the tourmaline, I figured that it might take some time to sell it. I have to get the rough first and I would want to see it in person before getting it. It''s looks clean and the guy is local to me, so I could go there to see it if I ever get the chance to do something like that. Finding a buyer locally might be an issue. It''s a thought though if nothing else.
emsmile.gif

I have heard of color change garnet actually. One of the networks has those, and they are not cheap. The ones I have seen tend to be a little on the dark side. I will have to look for the picture of the one you posted. Color change stuff to me is cool. There aren''t too many stones like that.

On the spessartites, I know those things have skyrocketed in price. I have heard that certain parts of Germany are offering some rediculous amounts for that stuff, and whatever is left and coming out of the ground is going straight to Japan. I read that on another site that it''s one of the few markets other than NYC that know about it in any abundance.

If you think those are rediculous, have you seen the prices on Tsavorties? I heard the mine was almost done and the price went through the roof. They supposedly found a new deposit right near that first one, but the price is still up there.

I have exactly the same problem:

When I''m outside (in or out of direct sunlight) it looks entirely different when viewed through the camera lens than it does when viewed with the naked eye...I suppose there''s some scientific explanation for this...

Your granddaughters aren''t the only ones that think they are magic. Those are my thoughts too.

By chance do you have a diamond lamp or something you could use as one along with a magnifier lamp like you might find in a jewelers bench? The images I have seen when people take pics of color change stones I think are used with a magnifier with 2 light sources. Try an incadescent lamp and a flourescent lamp shot respectively.

If you don''t have a diamond lamp, here is a little trick I figured out. Go to an aquarium shop. Ask for a 5000K or 6500K bulb for a saltwater aquarium. The spectrum is very uniform in those lamps. If you get one for freshwater tanks, some of those bulbs have a bit more red in them. I know this trick from trying to keep a SW tank, and I know the specs on these bulbs.

I have a feeling that the reason why the camera lens is not giving you the same image as you see is for 2 reasons. You''re looking at the stone from a different angle for one. Secondly, you''re magnifying the stone with the lens or altering the image size. As such, it refracts the light a little different so it may not look the same. That''s my guess anyways.
