Royal Jewels

Here is Emerald choker. It was given to Lady Diana as wedding present by The Queen. As part of the divorce aragement Diana was allowed to keep the pieces that were given to her by QEII and QEQM, with the proviso that they can''t be lent or sold. I beive the emerald and diamond earrings are a gift from Charles. I''m not sure about the cabochon ring, I think it''s one of the little times(if not the only) being worn in public.

AWESOME photos....thank you SO much Bobby!!! Where are you from?

Lori

You are welcome, Lori!

I am from Bulgaria. That''s a small country in eastern Europe, near Turkey, Greece, Macedona, Serbia and Romania. Until 1946 our country was monarchy and after that the communist came. The deposed Bulgarian royal family has a small, in comparison to the British of Sweedish, collection of tiaras and other royal jewels. Since 2001 the head of the family and his wife live in the country. Their children visit Bulagria occasionally.
I hope that''s a satisfying answer.
Where are you from?

Hi Bobby!

Very interesting history of Bulgaria. Do you live there now? What happened to the Royal Family when the communists took over? Guess they were allowed to live in the country in 2001? What is it like there for them now?

I am from Katy, Texas, USA. It is 30 miles West of Houston.

Bobby, fascinating, all of it. Thanks so much. I have to say, you are 17? You display such incredible maturity, knowledge, and sensitivity to the feelings of others, for anyone any age, let alone such a young age. Truly, I''m going to have to study these pictures and read your posts several times, before it sinks in. A lot of details, and a splendor that is almost difficult to imagine. BTW, not that it matters a lot, but since we''re saying where we''re from, I''m a US citizen, I was born in Florida, and it''s been my privilege to live in the US state of Hawaii for almost ten years. The pictures are beautiful. Thanks again.

Thank you for posting all of the lovely pictures, Bobby! I have MUCH to add to the Delhi Durbar "parure" info as well as the Cambridge emeralds, but I have to dig my copy of the The Queen's Jewels out of my temporary storage so I can supplement the material :) Just wait until I get the info out...more pictures! I heartily commend your research!

In the meantime, a picture of Queen Mary that I've never seen before...it appears to have been taken while she was still the Duchess of York. She received the Girls of Great Britain & Ireland tiara in 1893, so perhaps it was taken sometime soon thereafter.

Aaaaaaaand I forgot to attach the picture. My apologies.

Thank you so much for the encouraging and flattering comments! I'm simply doing my best!
Having in mind that the British royal jewelery collection is my favourite, and that emeralds are my favourite gem my interest in the paprure shouldn't surprise you. My knowledge of royal jewels comes mainly from this forum and Royal Magazin.de, so I thank LadyAmythyst for starting this thread and Ursula for the great site and knowledge she has.

Thanks, for the picture of the Duchess of York. I haven't seen it before, too. It shows one of the Duchess of Gloucester's pearls chokers, as well as Grany's tiara with the original pealr spikes. Personally I like it more without the pearls, so Thank you Queen Mary for removing them.
It would be nice the see what Leslie Field wrote in the book about the jewels, so feel free to post. I've seen scaned copies of some pages, but never the ones with the emeralds. I hope my statements are accurate:)

In reply to Lori:

Yes, I live in Bulgaria. I've never lived in another country so far.
When the comunists took over Simeon II, Ioanna, The Queen Mother, Princess Miraia Luisa(sister), Princess Eudoxia(aunt) and some loyal servants went in Egypt, where Victor Emanoil III and Queen Elena of Italy lived in exile. Later Gen. Franko invitev the Tsar, his mother and sister to move to Spain. Princess Eudoxia lived in Germani with fer father and later her sister, The Duchess of Württemberg. When Simeon married, Tsaritsa Ioanna went to Estoril, Portugal, where her brother Umberto II spent his live in exile. In 1989 the Comunist regime was abolished and seven years later, in 1996, TM were invited to visit Bulgaria. In 2001, after 55 years in exele Simeon II returned home. He established a politic party, won the 2001 elections and became Prime Minister. In 2005 his rate has fallen and they lost the elections. His party however joined the government along with two other parties and still rules. Next month there're going to be elections again, and most probably HM's party will gain up to 8.5 or 9%.
Since 2001 the Tsar and The Tsaritsa live here permenantly. HM and his sister restituated the privately owned residences, once in possession of the family and other real estates. The Royal couple now lives in Vrana Palace (near the capital).

Here is a picture of members of the Bulgarian royal family. The two ladies wering tiaras are Princess Marie Louise, Princess of Leiningen(L) and Queen Margarita(R). I haven''t seen other pictures of the jewels Princess Marie Louise wears, but I''m certain they''re Leiningen heirlooms. The Queen(or Tsaritsa) the tiara presented to another Marie Louise - Boris III''s mother. The picture is from the Royal family''s official website.

I LOVE history! Thank you Bobby! So, you were not born while the communists were in control? I''m wondering what the difference would be between living under communism and then living after it had been abolished. What would it be like for the general citizens of the country? How was the communist regime abolished? Who did it? I''m amazed at the history of your country.

Lori

Hi, Lori!

I was born in december 1991, and the communtists lost their power in Novemeber 1989. I don't know much about how things happened and I'm even not sure if I can explain it in English. You (and everyone interested) can read articles about it in Wikipedia. People say it was better living during Communism, because evryone was employed => there wenen't people living in poverty; we exported our stocks in other socialist countries (Romania, the Soviet Republics) and many other reasons. Probably the Communists/Socialists fall, because of the collapse of socialism in Russia. Now I can't imagine living in Socialist Bulgaria. There're a couple of majour reasons - Nowdays the borders are opened and people travel freely, there is private busines and foreign companies came here and establish their offices here, etc. Untill 1993 there were only two National(state) televisions - Kanal1 (Channel 1) and Efir2 and they showed what the party wanted the people to see. I can't imagine life without TV, Intenet and books writen by independent authors.
Maybe you can establish a new thread about history. I'm sure there are members from Russia, Sarbia, Romania and other countries, that would share their opinion and tell you what life was:)

But lets concentrate on Royal jewels.
In my previous post Princess Maria Louisa of Bulgaria, then Princess of Leiningen, wears a parure from her husband's family. I made a breaf research and found a picture in royal-magazin.de. There is sth writen that I can't understand, due to my lack of knowledge of German. Can someone translate it and post the translation, please? Here is the link - royal-magazin.de. Thanks in advance.

And a question to Danny - Hawaii was kingdom with it's own royal family nearly 200 years ago. Have you seen pictures of the Hawaiian monarchs and their family wearing any serious jewels?

Bobby

Hi, everyone!

Here is a picture from yesterday - The Queen in Dorset with the Dorset bow brooch. The jewel was a wedding gift to Princess Mary of Teck when she married The Duke of York in 1893 from the county of Dorst. In 1947 Queen Mary gave to her granddaughter Princess Elizabeth, now Queen Elizabeth II, as wedding present. Since then HM wears the brooch occasionally.

BTW tomorrow is Trooping the Colour. so what brooch do you think HM will wear? Personally I'd like to see one of her mother's, Cullian V or the star brooch. What do you think thw other royal ladies will wear?

Bobby

Bobby

Bobby, that's a good question. The short answer is 'no' but I'll do some research and post briefly about the Kingdom and its regalia. There are royal pieces still in existence. They don't compare in grandeur to the Crown Jewels of the UK (or similar).

Queen Liliuokalani

"The Kingdom of Hawai''i was established during the years 1795 to 1810 with the subjugation of the smaller independent chiefdoms of Oʻahu, Maui, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kauaʻi and Niʻihau by the chiefdom of Hawaiʻi (or the "Big Island") into one unified government. It lost its independence to an armed revolt led by Euro-American residents in 1893..."

Queen Liliuokalani was the last monarch of the Kingdom.

Statue of Kamehameha I in front of Iolani Palace (not his palace, built later)

King Kamehameha I was the first monarch of the Kingdom.

I should probably note that some the regalia of the Kingdom of Hawaii is not comprised of jewels in the European sense of the word.

This is the entry for Hawaii at Wikipedia under Crown Jewels.

"Some of the Crown Jewels and the original Thrones of the Kingdom of Hawaii reside within the custody of the Bishop Museum. Copies of the thrones can be seen at Iolani Palace. Some lie in state with the royals at the Royal Mausoleum at Mauna Ala. Feather cloak and wear are among the oldest of Hawaiian regalias: Nahienaena's Pa'u, the 180 feather skirt of Nahienaena and later the funeral attire for the dead monarch while lying in state; Kiwalao's Cloak aka Kamehameha's Cloak, the cloak won by Kamehameha I during his battle with Kiwalao; and Liloa's Kaei, the feather belt of Liloa, the 14th century King of Hawaii. Also the Kiha-pu or the War Trumpet (Conch Shell) of Kihanuilulumoku which is one generation older than Liloa's Kaei."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown_jewels

I haven't been to Iolani Palace or to the Bishop Museum but I plan to visit them if I get the chance to spend time on Oahu.

Thank you, Danny, for the links and information. It looks like the Hawaiian roayl family had hardly any jewels we can discuss. I haven't seen many good pics of that royal family, and in addition to this we can assume that the important jewels were sold during the family's exile.

Here is the Hawaiian crown. I think it's used in Coat of Arms of the Kingdom of Hawaii. It looks like pearls are set on the arches and precious stones on the base.
From the Wiki article, I assume that many feathers were used in the Hawaiian regalia.

Here's a picture from yesterday's Trooping the Colour. Although I think HM wore the same clothes before, I must say the Queen looked radiant as ever. Bright colours really suit her. If you look at post where HM wears the Dorset bow, you'll see that I gave my opinion on what brooch the Queen will wear. Obviously I was wrong. When I first saw the picture I was disapointed, because I remembere that the same big jewel was worn last wear. That grabed my attention and after a breaf research I found out that that's what HM wears at every Trooping the Colour, since she stopped ridng Burmise. I didn't know about that tradition.
Can someone explain what the brooch means? I'm sure it's sth connected with QEII's role as sovereign, because I belive it's composed of the stars of Britain's three highest ordes - Order of the Garter, Order of the Thistle and Order of StPatrick, a moto in latin and a crown to top it. Have you seen other outings of the brooch, different from Trooping the Colour?

Here is a closer and clearer photo:

Here are TRH The Earl & Countess of Wessex in an open carriage with THR The Duke & Duchess of Gloucester. The Countess wore diamond brooch and earrings, while The Duchess wore her necklace a la Wallis and the earrings for Queen Mary's present to Brigitte's mother-in-law - Princess Alice.
Maybe HRH wore a brooch, bu it's hard to tell.

Camilla wore her pearl choker with a big auqamarine claps. The stone mathced the Duchess' light blue outfit.

You''re welcome, Bobby. I''m not familiar with the brooch at all until today. I''m glad you posted these pictures and comments. I was hoping you would. The Countess of Wessex looks very regal. Her Wikipedia entry describes her early life as: "Sophie was born at Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, on 20 January 1965, the second child and first daughter of Christopher Bournes Rhys-Jones, a retired tyre salesman, and his wife, Mary (née O''Sullivan), a secretary,[2] who already had a son, David." I would not guess from this picture that she is the daughter of a tire salesman and a secretary. If you have any pictures of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, I''d enjoy seeing them. Thank you.

Probably that''s the picture of the diadem''s original owner, Queen Mary, that shows all the pieces from the parure* in their original form.

* I don''t think the word parure is the most proper, due to the fact that it consists of several pieces that were Fat Mary''s property and were later given/inherited to/from QM, and others that were presented by the Ladies of India. All these were later worn together, and that''s why it''s frequantly called The Delhi Durbar(sometimes Emerld) parure.

While seaching for pics of the jewels I also found one of QM where the Cullian VII pendant is repleced by CIII - the pear shaped chip. Unfortunately it(the photo) is of poor quality, so I most probably won''t post it.
These pieces are timeless.

Does Camilla have many of her own precious jewels or did she receive gifts from the Royal Family upon her marriage to Prince Charles? I would like to see some photos of her with her pretties. I know there are a few on this thread already, but are there more to be had? Thank you!
