Does anyone out there store their jewelry in a safe? And is it fire resistant? Right now I keep my wife''s diamonds in a 400 pound fire resistant gun safe that is bolted to the concrete floor and the wall studs. I keep papers and the jewelry in an additional fire resistant box inside just to be sure. Although I''m sure someone will find a way to get into anything with enough time I''m hoping that is enough to slow them down. Besides anyone that could quickly defeat this is wasting their talent robbing me. I''m not wealthy and anything really valuable, or things I don''t need often, or absolutely can''t lose I keep in a safe deposit box. The problem is the safe is on a different floor from the bedroom and it has a dial combination lock. I would like to get a smaller electronic lock safe to keep closer to the bedroom so my wife has better access to her jewelry. The problem is the comprimise between fire resistance and burglar resistance. Most fire resistant safes (especially the small ones) have thin plating and less holes to fasten them to the floor or wall. I''ve heard it said that the locks on "fireproof" safes function only to keep honest people honest and stupid people out. The smaller class B type safes have 1/4" steel bodies and 1/2 " steel doors but no fire resistance. You would have to get one big enough to fit a fireproof box inside. Safes that are both fire resistant and burglar resistant are expensive and usually large and very heavy.
So I guess the big question is how fireproof are diamonds and their settings? As long as they are kept away from actual flames in a steel box can they survive high temperatures? Will they be prone to fractures? I''d also be interested to see what kind of safes others have and if they are happy with them. I''m leaning towards a smaller safe with thick walls that can be securely bolted to the floor and wall.

Diamonds are carbon, and if you heat them high enough, they will turn into carbon dioxide--i.e., burn.

I'd contact the safe manufacturer to be sure.

I keep my jewelry accessible so I can enjoy it, and I have it insured in case of loss or damage.
