I have been on a long hunt for blue sapphire. DH is posted oversea for training today and won't be back till end Dec. Saw my early Xmas pressie! I am really excited. It is beautifully made in 18k white gold, bright, straight blue that glows under sunlight. but there is no paper work attached. Is this bright blue color possible to be fully natural without heat?

DH has accompanied me for my sapphire hunt. He is aware that I like unheat/untreat stones and also fat pear. I hope this is fit the criteria. Any guess on the carat weight? I measured it with my metal rule, it is about 8mm height and 6mm width for the sapphire itself. Thank you  Merry Xmas in advance!

Thanx for sharing my excitement spirit and ilander!

That is a wonderful gift Aggie, congrats!
My guess is 1.75 carat

thanx VapidLapid! it does not touch the 2 carats mark..O_o

Gorgeous ring, I love the double halo, Congrats! :appl:

Beautiful ring, and yes, they come unheated and untreated and beautiful. Merry X-mas!

Thanx for answering to my post! I called DH to thank him, although the main reason is to dig for more info on this ring

He said that it is a unheated, ceylon sapphire and a NGI report can be obtain at $50 from the jeweler.

It is 1.68 cts, if he remembers correctly. It is a close guess, VapidLapid!

Now, what is NGI? Is it a regconised gem lab? Do I need to request for the origin to be stated? We are residing in Malaysia...

LOVE it. I have a serious thing for pears lately. It's gorgeous, enjoy!

WOW!! :lickout: :lickout: :lickout: :lickout: :lickout:

Thanx crasru, lovingems,Porridge, vbnet and jewelfreak! I like fat pear, some say that they are prone to extinction, but so far those I saw are good. I think they are a classic shape that elongate fingers.

bum..NGI is a institute that provide gem education from my internet search..they do gem cert as well. They listed their equipment and type of testing in their website.. Is it a competent lab?

Oh, a fellow Malaysian! :wavey: Unfortunately, I am not familiar with NGI but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t a reputable lab. I think they are in Singapore and ChicTomato might have used them before. Are you planning on sending the sapphire to a lab to verify that it is unheated? Congrats on an early Xmas pressie.

Hello chrono you are from Malaysia? What a pleasant surprise! Nope it's the jeweler not me. From my understanding he had the sapphire tested before selling. He is certain that it is natural wo heat, and also a Ceylon origin. He did not have the cert I think reason being it cost more. But I can request to have one at $50 and he can get it done since all the specification had been recorded before. Is that a common practice?

Yes, but I left many years ago, although I do visit ever so often. Are you saying that the sapphire was tested at NGI but no cert was issued? Sounds like a rather unusual practice if that is the case.

Thane chrono to share! I think it's something like that. I will get DH to request for one when he returns..thanx

You don't have to worry. Light zoning, like the kind exhibited in your pictures, is often a characteristic of unheated Ceylon sapphires. That intense blue is rare to find in an unheated stone, but they are out there, and it looks like you found one! My first (and only) guess was a Ceylon unheated when I initially saw the pics. You don't have to worry about getting it tested, although some people might. :) Congrats on a beautiful stone!

I don't know anything about sapphires, but I do know something beautiful when I see it! Goregous!

thanx Jvlin and Amysbling :-)

It will be another 2 weeks before DH is back..and also my certification.. Jvlin I feel more secure with a paper of some sort to prove.

I tried to wear it and take some snaps and I realise that I have a big problem making clear pictures, trust me, I took lots of photos and they are all so blurry. Can someone help or provide tips on taking good hand shots? here are the best ones.. thanx

Definitely outdoor photography to take advantage of natural lighting, no flash and macro mode is a must. If it is eye clean, it's good enough. When it is loupe clean, it's time to ask yourself if the stone is a synthetic and bring it to your appraiser to verify. Do NOT expect any gemstone to be crystal clear when louped. Colour is king, not VVS clarity grading.

Thanx chrono.. I am learning to appreciate these inclusions:) nevertheless I have got it certify.. the certification should be mailed to me by this weekend.. Do guide Me on the details as I am sure that it will be fill with information that will overwhelm my limited knowledge in cs!

Really? I thought heated stones could have zoning. Honestly, I don't think you can tell a heated, diffused or unheated sapphire without seeing it in person with specialized equipment (a microscope at least). I would never say it's an untreated stone from a photo, and a blurry one at that.

I've seen zoned sapphires that were heated. I have one, and it looks just like that color.

To the OP, I hope your stone turns out unheated, and it's a beautiful ring.

I hope so as well, I will post the result on the forum. Thanx you have a pretty pink trillion!
