Screwback earrings...is this normal?

Hi all! Have a question for you all, before I consider a repair. I have two pairs of diamond studs that i alternate wearing (one pair is dbty, the other is prong set, both are tiffany) and they are both doing this almost daily. I alternate them weekly, so normally i sleep in them. Lately when i wake up, they are screwed so tightly that my ears are red and sometimes hurt. I loosen them up, but the next morning, same. I do wear small silicone stops behing the screw to stop them unscrewing (i've had this happen in the past, its terrifying). So not sure if that contributes? Anyway, i hate to get the posts changed if its not going to help. Tiffany repairs are so expensive, and as we speak i have a ring there being sized and the cost shocked me, to say the least. Thanks for any input you may have!! :)

I pretty much never sleep in earrings so I don't know. If you switched to protector type backs that would stop the backs from moving either direction though.

I would not wear them to sleep. It sounds like you keep them on 24/7 during the entire week in which case I would assume you are also showering with them. I would not do this... you could so easily lose one down the drain. It just isn't worth it. Take them off before bed and put in a safe place (not next to the sink!) and in the morning after you've showered put them back on.

It means the posts are too thin and maybe that’s why the backs are easily moving back and forth. I have screwbacks and they NEVER move of shift. Maybe apply a bit of loctite might help it from screwing around on you ~lol pun intended.

Screw on earrings are not safer than decent butterfly clips.
Fact based on 44 years experience and straw polls at bars of jewellers conferences.
Anyone who says otherwise is wrong.
Gold and platinum are horrible alloys for screw fittings

Thanks for the input, Garry!
I totally agree, I cannot stand these backings. No matter what i do, i never feel like its secure. And, I hate taking them out bc im always dropping the backs and they are so tiny and hard to find.
But what to do? I have considered getting la pousette backings, but i hear you cant get them wet; that the interior parts rust. I wonder if Tiffany's would swich them out to plain posts with butterfly backs??

Lol!! Will the lucite make the screw tighter? Cause i think its a bit loose, maybe?

I know, I know, I should take them out. But im super lazy, always forget to put them back on (and i cant stand naked ears!! ;) and im always dropping the backs on the floor, and those suckers bounce!! They are insured, but i would still be sick if i lost one.

Coming from experience do not sleep with the studs in your ears..I have had to re pierce my ears bc the first piercing stretched in my earlobe when I left the studs in 24/7. I now take them out every night.

i have screw posts as i thought they are more secure that butterfly backs. (drummed into me by my mum who has earrings. not that she ever knew i was going to get earrings)

I hated removing my screw posts for the same reasons as you.
Having butterfly backs now, i love these. they are secure, and i do wear them just like you, all the time!

I do not think that they will change the post (but definitely worth asking). I think it will have to be a setting change, which would mean more cost.

You have to decide whether the pain of the screw posts is enough to change the settings to butterfly backs. WHatever that cost is... it could be worth it in the end... it is easier to remove and the relief that you have from the daily grind of removing the screw backs and putting them on.

If the la pousettes are solid gold or platinum, why would they rust? It doesn't make sense to me so I'm very curious if this is true.
All of my studs have butterfly backs and I sleep in them, shower in them, etc. I have never lost one and my piercings are not stretched at all so I guess everyone has a different experience. I just hate screw backs. They bother my ears and I agree, I find them easy to drop while I'm trying to screw them on.

I heard that the springs inside are not made of precious metal, so they can rust. I have no idea if this is true or not. I found this out after i helped my mom get earrings and i made her get la pousette backs. She hates them.

I do think i would remove them more frequently if i had butterfly backs, this is a good point. With the screws it such a hassle. I have to psych myself up, and make sure im not standing near a drain, or any type of crevasse, and even then im so nervous until they are both our and safe.

Ouch! I'm so sorry that happened! Yeah in thinking maybe i need to make a change so i feel more confident in removing them more often.

If the studs are diamonds and precious metals there is no problem soldering on them and chanig the posts over

Yes, both pairs are diamonds and platinum. Wish me luck, Im going to call Tiffanys in the morning to see if they will do it, and what the cost would be.

I don’t sleep or shower wz earrings on like most people here & I don’t find wearing & removing them a hassle as I always spend extra on getting big backings. It is much easier to hold & grip bigger backings w/o dropping & most importantly, they are more secure & provide better support (hence my earrings won’t droop)!

What you are telling us is the same reason my Tiffany studs never leave their box. Not only do they unscrew and are a pain to put on and take off, but the threads on the screws are abrasive to my piercings.
I look forward to hearing the cost for having them altered.

I have had Protektor backs on a pair of near-daily-wear earrings in platinum for 9 years now. Aside of the fact that the backing discs are small and slick, they are perfect. They fit just where I want them to and are incredibly comfortable. There has been no change in their springiness at all.

Ok so im upset to say im a little upset with Tiffany right now. They will not quote me a price, i have to send them in for evaluation. Even though I said im ok with it being approximate, and i was aware that there could be issues that cause the job to be more costly. Im really not willing to send (and insure!) my very expensive earrings, only to have them sent back if the cost is too much. And i have no reason to think it wouldnt be; i have a ring being sized up 1/2 size there right now and i followed this procedure. I thought "how much could it be??" Ummm.... $236!! For a simple 1/2 size? I think its rediculous. So, while on the phone, I asked for an update on the job (they've had my ring for 2 weeks) March 11th is the date it will be done. OMG. Really? Just super upset right now, thnks for reading my rant. :angryfire:

Good to know! Do you wear them in the shower? Bc i heard as long as you don't they last a long time. My mom has had them for about a year and has already lost one, she says they are slippery little things, but she does say they are more comfortable than screws.

I did ask tiffany a while back about bigger screwbacks and they do carry those (for now at least) i think they cost $65 each, which for me isn't too bad! Maybe i should invest in those? Would it help?

I use these:

They function like the Protektor backs but are easier to use (I've dropped the Protektor backs). I used to own screwbacks too and I would use these on them too.

The spring that closes the La Pousette type backs is not made of gold or platinum and they do rust if you wear them in the shower or swim with them. I have many clients who love the La Pousette type backs. (My personal favorite is the Guardian II backing system as it has a curved push which is much more comfortable than the straight push types that can be painful to use.)

I do not recommend screw backs to my clientele as the threads tend to collect detritus and because they are thicker than a normal back to allow for the threading, they can irritate the piercing hole and that can lead to infections.

Like Garry, my many years of experience has seen more lost screw back style earrings than the simple friction backs.

I have Tiffany studs in platinum and they don't unscrew, become loose, or get tighter when I wear them at night. Is it possible you retain fluid at night while lying supine and it affects your earlobes? I find it odd the screw backs could tighten all by themselves unless the grooves are flattened on the posts? Or possibly you mess with them in your sleep and are unaware?

Really? My only concern is that im highly allergic ti anything but platinum. If im reading the listing correctly, they come in platinum color, but not platinum? But looks like an amazing product!!

Its entirely possible, that they do swell a little. I have fat earlobes to begin with, lol. Its more likely due to the fact that i am a very restless sleeper, and yeah all that tossing a turning prob does it!

I've been wearing the same backs for 3 years with no problems. They are platinum on top but inside it's stainless steel, they look brand new after 3 years. You could always buy them and try them and if they don't work for you return them to Amazon.
They work amazing on screwbacks, I had two pairs of those studs and one of them had a vintage thick post and these worked perfectly.

Never sleep in them! Not only you could damage them, it is not hygienic. I did it once with small studs and after 48 hours I had bloody earlobes with ravid infection. I heard others had the integrity weaken and lost a diamond. Yes, I too hate putting them on but O clean them daily and take a minute to sit down and put them on. It is a pain but better than infected ears. I absolutely despise screwbacks as I am clumsy too, so I just use normal butterflies, a little easier and defo more practical IMHO.
