Please stay safe @Bayek.
That's true...why work if you receive more $$$ for staying home?
As an aside despite not having a job since March I haven't collected any unemployment so I really don't have a horse in the game here. However I am not the only one with kids to take care of and nowhere for them to go.
I'm not sure what your exact circumstances are, but if you are eligible for unemployment, you should file and collect for it right away as they don't reimburse for lapsed time.
Unfortunately I was only employed for a month before the shutdown so I was told that I didn't qualify for the state unemployment. Recently someone told me that I would qualify for the federal funds if I didn't qualify for the state so I have applied and waiting to hear back.
I should have just filed back in March but I was told I would be given work to do from home, that never happened unfortunately.
I wanted to make a comment about the article linked above, where Dr. Fauci discusses his "evolved" view on public masking. I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but I'm going to say it. In my opinion, Dr. Fauci is a liar and a fraud. I'm going to preface this by saying that I used to have respect for him, but I no longer do. In my opinion, he does not actually believe that ubiquitous mask wearing for the general public is effective in stopping/slowing the spread of the virus. His previous recommendations/statements clearly stated that masks did not work to slow/stop the spread of virus and were not necessary for the general public. His current stance is a complete 180 degree turn, and is, in reality, a stunning admission to either a previous lie, or a current one.
If he really believes that "masks work", then he was lying to all of use when he told us they were not necessary. And if he believes that masks DO work and ARE an important tool to stop/slow the spread, what a monstrous lie that would have been! What kind of public health official exposes the public to increased danger with a convenient lie, even if if that lie was to save masks for health care workers? If he truly believed/believes that masks work, he would have told us back then to wear homemade masks and save the manufactured ones for healthcare workers.
Either he was lying then, or he's lying now. He's outed himself as a manipulator and, at this point, I don't know how I'm supposed to believe anything he says.
Suggesting that states should have free reign over COVID-19 recommendations and can flagrantly disregard public health recommendations not what I meant and nor should "states rights" be interpreted that way - it isn't the wild west and we live in a global society - but making intelligent choices based on surges, and exercising special precautions in areas with higher #s is what I meant.
It only takes one person to spread COVID-19 to a community that was otherwise not impacted.
I just spent a weekend in a county in Wisconsin that has only had a total of 36 confirmed cases since the pandemic began.
Seems like it would overkill to recommend masks and continued precautions in a county with 36 cases in 4ish months, right? Not so and here's an example as to why.
Someone in the county was diagnosed / tested positive for COVID-19, but he was asymptotic. Let's do a little "contact tracing" exercise after he tested positive and ignored recommendations - I learned this from local friends and family who are related to him:
That is just a snapshot of his activities and what I could confirm. Enraging how much devastation one irresponsible person can leave in their wake. Do you see how fast it can happen?
- I saw him walking around a town of 3,500 on a Saturday afternoon, without a mask, and chit chatting nice and close with everyone he came across without a care in the world - I saw him do this with 5 people, including my 63 yr old mother ( I did NOT know he had COVID-19 then), and 2 elderly men, in a 20 minute time period
- His sister, her husband and their two teenage daughters
- His sister is a makeup artist and had since done makeup for multiple bridal parties before he admitted she knew he was positive
- His elderly parents
- A pregnant cousin and her two children and husband
- A family friend undergoing chemotherapy and battling 3rd stage breast cancer - oh and her husband and 11 year old daughter
We are lucky to live in a country that actually has unemployment in place. Of course this has negatively impacted people financially. I took a pay cut too, many have dealt with far far worse. It is a pandemic! More people died from the Spanish flu than the entire first world war. It is ugly, sad, devastating, and mind boggling how easily a virus can cut the world at its knees. But we know a lot more than we did in 1918 and should use that knowledge to make better choices to prevent deaths.
I am sorry that people are suffering financially. I really am. My heart aches for the suffering this virus has caused. My dear friend lost her grandmother to COVID-19 too and couldn't even attend her funeral. But people who argue against using masks or think social distancing is a conspiracy are really a huge problem - especially people who are positive.
Are you worried about a second wave of COVID-19 with states beginning to open up and cases outstanding? I know there is more testing, hospital capacity, PPE, and people are taking precautions. And there is the economic, mental health, and other considerations to balance. But what will it be like in the short, mid, and long term? As the stock market has largely rebounded, do you think it's due for another correction?
