Hi everyone!
This is my first time posting, although I have been lurking for quite a while and have really enjoyed learning so much from all of you!

I have a question about settings for K, L, and M color diamonds. My FF will be giving me a 2.8 slightly yellow rb diamond. It is a family diamond and I will of course be thrilled to receive it but I do have some concerns about the yellow tint. The jeweler who will be setting it thinks that GIA would grade it as an L or M and EGL would give it a K. He thinks that it will be graded a VS1 or VS2 depending on who we send it to. I’ve seen it and it’s beautiful, but does have a yellowish tinge in some types of lighting. Is there a way to choose a setting that will minimize the tinge? For example, can I have it set in a 6 prong tiffany style that will raise it to the light and allow it to sparkle more, thus diminishing the tinge to the naked eye? The ring is white in the shade and many types of lighting; it’s just in some natural lighting that it shows the yellow. I know many psers are against setting diamonds of this color in white settings but I have recently developed allergies to most metals and have been told that platinum is my best bet if I am going to be wearing my ring all the time. Sorry for the long post, I hope it makes sense. Thanks in advance for your help!

Ps- I don’t know the cut of the stone, but I can see arrows in the shade. Not sure if this extra info helps, but I thought it might mean that the cut is somewhat decent.

I have heard that setting a lower color stone in a bezel style setting will possibly improve the face up color of the stone. I have seen this done in 2 different cases and the diamond did look quite good.

Well, you could always go with an antique-style setting in plat. This makes the whole thing have an heirloom look and the color wouldn''t matter so much. It would simply be part of the charm.

faycullen.com sells antique rings. Many of their rings are in the K-L range. You can browse through their rings and see the ways you like the warmer diamonds, their pictures are pretty realistic looking I think. This might help you get a feel for how it will look set. Also, someone has a beautiful M antique diamond set in a Leon Mege platinum setting that looks gorgeous. Can anyone help think of who that is and dig up a picture?

Here's an M diamond in platinum from faycullen.com
It does show color, but I agree with Shay that it looks pretty in an antique setting. It's just a different look than you see out there right now. People used to appreciate a little color more than they do today. Today everyone seems to want icy white diamonds, but warmd diamonds can be very pretty too! By the way, faycullen sells this setting and many others for pretty reasonable prices if you like it. Are you looking for something more modern or antique?

Tiger007g's M in a leon M...

It looks almost pinkish to me. Warm and pretty.

Scintillating...

Thanks for the help everyone!

kcoursolle: To answer your question, I was in fact hoping for something a little more modern although the antique rings are beautiful. I''m not as concerned about the diamond showing color from the side as much as how it will look face up. That''s why I was hoping the raised tiffany setting might help to create sparkle in natural light and help trick the eye.

Beacon: My only concern with a bezel setting is that I have a size 3.75 finger and wouldn''t want the metal (when paired with my wedding band) to overwhelm my hand. Have you seen stones of this size set in tension settings?

I just reset my K VVS2 with medium blue flourescence in platinum and am thrilled with it! I hope this link works...

I have had this stone for almost nine years and twice it was set in yellow gold and the last setting was 18K white gold with lots of princess cut diamonds. I honestly think it looks best in white metal...

You will see more color from the side than from the top - I really love this halo because now I never have to look at the side view!

A platinum tiffany setting would probably be fine, but I''m not sure sure about a tension setting. A tension setting leaves the sides completely open and will show much more color than a pronged setting.

much of it will depend on the cut of the stone in terms of how much body color the stone will hold. it seems like old euro cuts and similar carry much more body color than more modern ideal cut round brilliants. if you see arrows in the shade that is a sign that maybe it's a more modern RB? could be very well cut as well. in any case, it's hard to estimate what type of color you'd see in the stone, eyes are so personal. i have a 2.3 J and i love it but from the side it does show a tiny hint of warmth. i have seen amazingly white K's though as well. and there was a 3c M on here that was hearts and arrows that looked very white in all the pictures.

most of these warmer colored stones look great as you stare down into the table of the stone, they look very white and bright. but it's from the side that you will see color. so if you do think it will bother you, set it into a bezel with the sides covered...that's the best way to hide that body color in my opinion. or celebrate the body color and put the stone into a wonderful antique or vintage setting or style setting to show it off. sometimes those settings look better with K/L kind of stones in them!

lastly, i will say that many people don't even notice the color in a well-cut stone really...regular viewing doesn't mean scrutinizing from the side very often. but it's not uncommon to see that color in a side view and so any sort of open setting WILL show it. so if that bothers you, cover the sides. good luck!

Thanks everyone!

I have a large L colour and mine is set in a WG basket with split double claw prongs - this really helps to minimise the warmth, especially I think as the little metal 'plate' under the diamond helps reflect through the stone if this makes sense. I love warmth in a diamond, but am amazed at how white mine looks set this way. I think it will be gorgeous too in platinum and PLEASE post pics when the ring is completed!

Also if the side view concerns you, a basket setting will help hide much of it too along with the split prongs.

Thanks Lorelei! Do you have an pics you can post?

Hey Mermer - I actually do have pics now, but they are not very good, let me know if you would like them posted and I will send them to Irina as I don''t know how....

Hey Lorelei-
Would it be too much trouble for you to post them? I''m making a collage to take to the jeweler...

Rogue- Thanks for attaching the link to your thread! I love your setting and am beginning to think that a basket could be the way to go...

It''s not unusual for older stones to be warmer in color (L-M) range. I had a friend set such stone in an antique type setting w/ two very white baguettes on the side. It''s quite lovely. Instead of masking the color - it brought the warmth to attention.

Hi Fire&Ice,
I know it''s not unusual for older stones to have more color...I guess I just feel self-conscious b/c it''s such a large stone and I don''t want people to think that I sacrificed quality just to get a huge rock! That''s to say, most people won''t know it''s a family diamond, they''ll just see a small girl with a big stone. :) It actually faces up closer to 3 ct. Pricescope purity has gotten to me!

Mermer - thanks for your kind words, if you want more pics or full size pics of the basket, feel free to let me know. And Pricescope is sooo dangerous, I totally agree. I''m trying to cut down on my daily dose...
