Setting for a Princess cut (so confused)

Hi,

Very good forums here and would love some help on a princess cut setting.

I have a 1.03 carat princess already. I know everyone must ask this but I'm really confused to the setting I should get.

One day I'm sold on solitaire, the next is some tapered baguettes on the side while other times I think it needs more bling and needs a micropave/pave.

My original idea was to get a solitaire style and then let her go with whatever she feels like for the wedding band.

I guess my worry is if I get solitaire will that just look plain (also, she was engaged a long time ago and had a 0.5 carat round, yellow gold, I just can't for the life of me remember if she mentioned if it was a solitaire, but I think it was which leads me to thinking she would want something different, or is the different stone shape different enough?)

I like the way it sits on this one

I did see this and thought the thin tapered baguettes looked nice (obviously its a larger stone), but not 100% on how they would look with each other as most styles I have seen have an emerald cut in the middle. And also how would the wedding band sit?

Obviously a pave/micropave would be the easiest way to bling it up, but then worry it may be too much

Long Story Short: Should I add more bling or is solitaire enough?

Thanks in advance, I think I've run in circles, so thought some opinion might be handy. Good thing you're only supposed to do this once!

What is your budget?
i might sound crazy here, but what about with brilliant cut traps? Or traps and and bullets for a 5 stone? it may not be in the budget, im not sure what your setting budget is, but its very sleek and elegant like you were looking for a solitaire, but with more bling, and i would be certain a 5 stone, or even a 3 stone similar to this, would not be anything like her old one

Budget is about 2000 I think but if I like something I could change my mind.

Taking a look at these options now.

I'm trying to play it safe, without playing it safe I guess

If it were me I would ask. This is a large purchase and you want her to be happy. If it were me I would want input. Does she know whats up?

She has no idea, it is long overdue on my part but I would still prefer to do this without her knowing. The princess cut I know, the rest I'm confusing myself more with I think.

I don't mind the second one or even the split is an interesting idea, not too sure about the small diamond at the bottom of the head?

The more I look, the more I like and see new options.

I agree ask her unless she wants a surprise. Some girls dream about the perfect ring and some dream about the perfect proposal.

I dont know if dbl will set an outside stone- it only mentions something about the sides- but there 18k gold is right around budget

Even if you dont go with them, seems like brian gavin or whiteflash should be able to make you a 3 stone with brilliant trapazoids for around that price, if you go that route.

I like the idea because its understated but still blingy and classic

The more things you say no to the more I think she should be involved in choosing. A *brand new* idea - put it in a temporary solitaire setting and when you give it to her, tell her you'd like her to pick the setting that'd make her the happiest. Major brownie points for you!!

That did cross my mind (the temporary ring) definitely as an option. It's still up there if I can't find something I think she would like.

Well it was more having the diamond together with the jewellers details and saying we could make an appointment.

Might have to sleep on this one I think, I really did want to have something done though that would be from me as well and I think it would mean more to her if I did choose it

The only way I think you would have a good chance of getting something different was if you did something that is very in style now. However, some people might have a problem with getting a setting that might look dated 30 years down the line.

Maybe look at something with vintage details, like engravings or some side details (like below) that would set it apart. I'd look into Tacori and Beverly k. You might also want to look into crisscross or ribbon settings

What kind of settings are the "in fashion" type these days?

I think I am definitely going to go ahead and get a design made up.

I think she is someone who would appreciate that more that I have gone through this and I think I can find something that she would like.

3 stones are out though as an option though due to other similar ones.

If I choose solitaire, I'm leaning to something like this as mentioned earlier

Otherwise I am thinking something similar with a little bit of bling on the side but the same truth style head as I think that looks pretty nice.

Also looking into the engraving as well, that does look like a nice touch, thanks

edit: would matching earrings be too corny?

Will you be custom designing or is it an option? A design within the triangles above the shoulder would look lovely and defiantly set it apart.

I'd say currently in style are split shanks, halos and the criss-cross/ribbon styles. I'm sure others can list off a couple more.

Diamond earrings are NEVER too corny!!

dont worry too much about whats in style. Just because its popular doesn't mean its her style. Do what you think looks best with her style. Now a days anything is in style if its well made.

Why are 3 stones out? i didnt quite understand.

3 stones are more expensive. You have to get two additional diamonds plus a 3 stone setting which tend to be more expensive...

Sorry I forgot to add to it, someone we know has 3 stones albeit round ones. (halos for the same reason)

I'm probably looking at getting this custom designed yes.

Would a split shank make choosing a wedding band harder? or is it how the head sits that affects how the wedding band will sit?

There are three stones ins a 2k budget. So i figured it was something else. And sounds like it is, you cant have anything anyone else has? Or shes seen theirs and you know she doesnt like it? Because solitaires are pretty common too. :)

a split shank will mean the band isnt going to sit as flush. Some woman dont mind that. some do though

ETA its going to be a little hard to get a custom design at 2 k if you're looking for diamond pave down the band and engraving

I love the picture of the Truth setting you posted and I would go with something like that, its gorgeous! I wouldn't go with split-shank unless you know she likes that specific style. I think the solitaire is "safer" if she isn't involved in the process.

The Vatche Caroline is also one of my favorite settings for a princess-cut. There are a few pics in this thread:

I think this is gorgeous too:

A little bit is that others have it and I wouldn't want to get the same thing, but also I remember her saying something along the lines of not something she would want.

The only reason I thought of solitaire (and the one I posted feels a bit different to many I have seen in stores) is because while safe, I would let her do whatever she wanted for the wedding band? If I said she was a big fan of tiffany's, would that make you think that she likes a simpler style of jewellery?

Is there a general thought on platinum versus white gold?

Thanks so much for answering too, everyone here is very quick and helpful. :appl:

tiffany's is pretty timeless, usually, with there e rings. But then again , who isnt a fan of tiffanys.
I really liked your idea of baguettes. i just love those, but they would have to be a little long. I wonder if you contacted brian gavin and said "hey i want a long baguette princess setting for a 1 ct with a truth head" what they would quote you.

i prefer gold. But i dont like the idea of it getting replated, so i chose to leave mine unplated. Basically its white with just the slightest tint of yellow. If you dont want that go platinum. Otherwise they say you should replate the rhodium on white gold (what makes it EXTRA white) every year or so.

did she like her yellow gold ring before? What about rose gold?? :lickout:

ETA: a solitaire is a good idea. you just have to know if she likes something that plain :)

I did email them to see how the baguettes would look so will see what they say. thanks for the tip

I think I am starting to lean towards the look of the sleek pave WF or BGD.

I really like the truth head and legato seems similar, but the shots I've seen with a princess seem square edged at the top of the prongs (if that makes sense?)

how is the height the height of the stone on either of these two?

http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/diamond-settings/legato-sleek-line-pave-diamond-engagement-ring-422.htm

http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/engagement-rings/pave-and-side-stones/classic-truth-sleek-micro-pave-18k-white-gold-5542w18

Does anyone have any pictures of these two in princess cut? More specifically with the truth head?

So this is kinda where I've headed to in the last few days?

Any thoughts? I guess more if there is something obvious that I am missing with the dimensions?

Thanks in advance (not sure how to make the image bigger?)

I think the CAD looks great. I prefer a tapered look toward the center stone, and this one does it nicely.

Thanks, hopefully it comes out nice.

is 2.6mm a fairly standard width?

I think it's the perfect size and looks gorgeous!!!

Thanks,

I'll probably go ahead with that design,

what does anyone think of hidden birthstones on the inside? (mine and hers) Emerald and Ruby

Is it a bit much for an engagement ring?

Not at all! I love hidden birthstones :)) It's very sweet and meaningful to have a little secret that no one else knows about!
