What a great thread. These are making me tear up - all so beautiful.
Thanks for the effort taken, LLJs, in putting this thread together. It's so good to see a lot of OECs in one place!
and I am so happy for you with yours. I know you are looking at it all the time and having fun : )
This is the thread that ran for many years but people forgot about it and stopped posting on it. There are some magnificent old cuts in the posts and it's the reason I own old cuts today;
Great thread....This OEC is going to buck the trend a little....
It's set into a gents tablet style ring.
It is also tiny compared to what is on here.
0.65ct OP colour.
My new 0.70ct J VS2 OEC in a platinum bezel setting. Size 4.25 for a 3.75 finger (likes my rings loose). It faces up large for its weight. I am an awful photographer but it is stunning in real life.
Hi Alex! Thank you for the lovely compliment. Yes, I returned the Blue Nile ring. You might remember I didn't like the setting and was going to have it swapped for a bezel, but the only bezel setting Blue Nile did wasn't quite to my taste, and I was worried about having such an expensive stone (to me!) set locally in case it chipped etc... and I was overall just a bit uncomfortable about spending such a lot of money... so ended up returning the whole thing and looking for an alternative. Along the way, I started being drawn to OECs more and more, and found this one! It is a 0.70ct GIA cert J VS2 OEC from a jeweller in Scotland who specialises in old cuts. Amazingly it was about a third of the price of the 1 carat BN diamond but has a really good spread so once in the bezel setting (which I had done by a local jeweller - platinum and a custom job but very well priced), I really can't tell much difference in size. I love the faceting and it performs like nothing I've ever seen before - I just wish I could take better photos to show it.
Great thread LLJsmom. Thanks for including Bea. Sharing some of her latest photos that I took just for you if you remember.
First pic is Be a under the green leafed trees at the Botanical Gardens. She is very green here.
Still looking very green under all the greenery at the gardens. I never saw her this green before and I am liking it.
and here she is at work in a room of beige walls and beige tiles and fluorescent lighting. Here she is at her softest creamiest color but still pretty.
Here she is under some fun red lighting.
Under fluorescent lighting. As you noticed our OECs can face up pretty darn white under fluorescent lighting.
Here she is under some of my favorite conditions. Outdoors in the sun on the beach with the ocean hitting the shore.
and just another few photos showing what a chameleon our OECs are. They are never boring.
Bea outside again. Love her under the blue skies and on the ocean.
Lastly since this is a thread about OECs here is are 2 quick pics of my newest OEC addition. A pair of OEC drop earrings.
My two OECs are babies compared to all these beautiful rings. They're niblets! but here goes. Greg, thanks for posting pics of yours.
The first is a platinum ring that is dated 1921 inside. The OEC is F color, VS clarity and a little under a half carat. Somewhere between .45 and .50 pts. is as close as we're going to get. I didn't want to have the stone disturbed and taken out of it's long time home. I did have it looked at by a Master Gemologist/Appraiser (the only one in NY) and he liked it, so I was happy.
My second one is a certified (although by EGL) (ehhh ) to be 53 pts., H in color, VS2 in clarity. I agree with the clarity grading although I think the color is either an I or J. The stone was set by Papa I. at IDJ surrounded by .05 pt. diamonds hand chosen by him. Everyone loves my little pendant.
If you want to have a little fun with a person who knows nothing about diamonds, tell them your stone is an OEC and watch the expression on their face. They'll either immediately change the subject -or- they'll pretend to know what you're talking about and dig themselves a nice deep hole of confusion. LOL!
