Just browsing today...,I found this adorable star wedding set! The star is almost a perfect sphere. They were likely used quite a bit in wedding jewelry before the reign of diamonds....if I had been a young woman in 1910, I would have been thrilled to get this lol!

Some other stars of interest...I love the minimalist proportions of this star ring, and the color too. The star itself is a ‘type’ of star in opacity and color, which I believe comes from Thailand. Somehow I always wonder if they are natural even when proclaimed to be. Maybe it’s the thinness of the star, and opacity, or that they look most similar to Linde stars.....really pretty though.

I know...it really is disturbingly synthetic looking. I think it’s the stone in the ring. As doctored as it looks, ive never seen a synthetic like that with the crooked , interrupted star...and it doesn’t look like a diffusion star either. i don’t trust that’s for sure!

Today I decided to wear both blue star rings....there is no direct sun today, but it’s a kind of mild overcast... the smaller one, ( Sky star) seems to shift between blue and lavender/blue which is fun because it changes moods, but the light has both looking touched by more lavender today. What I really love about Moonlight Jelly is that the star itself is blue. In the first picture, you can see a brighter blue blob of light...that is the color of the star trying to emerge.

Thankyou, Missy! The shifting moods are why I love these gems so much. I’d love to find eventually a pink and white, ‘cherry blossom star’ . I can only imagine how those would change in lighting!

Bluegemz, how do you tell is a star sapphire is diffused? I notice that your star sapphires are more delicate in color. I was at a gem show this weekend and was looking at some star sapphires. They were a navy blue( not really what I wanted) and the vendor said they were diffused. I didn’t see any pretty stars at the show, so I passed.

This is somewhat hard to describe in words....In my experience, (not an expert) diffusion stars are even, often strong color, (often but not always I imagine) with opacity and a star that appears very surface since the treatment is only on the surface. There is a cotton like, super fine texture to the star as opposed to a more hairlike look of natural stars. With translucent stars that are natural, one can see how the aligned silk penetrates the light deeply into the stone. Ofcourse, It’s harder to tell with natural, more opaque stars. A gem microscope is helpful with this, but as always, if uncertain, send to a lab.

Here are pics of how the asterism channels the light wavelength paths deep within the stone....notice the hair like silk in the asterism, and the graduation of color as the light paths extend through the stone.

The royal blue,opaque star sapphire DOES also occur naturally, so in these cases, it’s harder to tell.

I plan to ask my jewellers in Yangon if white on white star sapphire is really that rare. I know @Seaglow's clear bodied one is.

That’s a good question. I don’t think they are as rare as the clear bodied ones for sure, though nice stars are generally rare period. Though my tiny clear star is small, and was not expensive, I've only seen 2 others like it in all my years browsing ... I’d love to find a bigger one like this someday.

The chap wants us$1800 for this. Trying to negotiate now but probably not much lower than that as it's What they term a collector's stone here with a good star, gemmy body and obvious colour, though not a blue blue!

That’s a good question. I don’t think they are as rare as the clear bodied ones for sure, though nice stars are generally rare period. Though my tiny clear star is small, and was not expensive, I've only seen 2 others like it in all my years browsing ... I’d love to find a bigger one like this someday.

I've not seen one here though I suspect it's not really sold to the secondary market unless by chance. Now I know if I see 1 I will grab it, regardless of size!

That seems like a decent price honestly even if you can’t get much lower. I personally like the mid range blues as one can see into the stone more. Also that size is lovely.
