Show your Star sapphires and rubies

My new 16 ct unheated GIA certified blue star sapphire ring! I have been looking for a big clear blue one with a great star for a long time. It is set in platinum with diamonds. It was made in exactly my size (5.75) and I knew it was meant for me the moment I saw it! No filter or editing.

That is unbelievably beautiful. That is my favorite setting too. Wow. What a showstopper. I honestly think I wouldn't ever want to take that off. Its FABULOUS! If I may ask, did you get this from a B&M store, or online vendor?

It was an online vendor! Thanks so much!

My new purple star sapphire. I've waited for a long time for a star sapphire with good translucency.

That is so nice! Pretty skillful flush mounting, too! Enjoy!

OMG I cannot believe this thread resurfaced - yet AGAIN this triggered me falling down a rabbit hole of star sapphire searches for two hours last night!

This is my baby contribution to the thread. My daughter (10) adores star sapphires and so I bought her this teeny one for Christmas. It’s like a little drop of water. Very transparent with a sharp star but micro!

What a wonderful gift for a child!

Even to me as a nerdy adult, knowing the theory, star stones still seem a bit magical. Your daughter can appreciate the magic now. As she gets older, she will come to understand how refraction through the dome interacts with reflection from the rutile needles to make the star move. And she will wonder how the needles come to be aligned with the three crystal axes. (Partial answer: at high temperatures the titanium atoms can move through the lattice.) A journey of discovery lies ahead.

Finally got some pictures of this lovely 1930's ring with a natural purple star sapphire. It is more translucent than it looks in the pictures, but what I really love is the ring itself with it's 4 OECs and single cuts on the sides. If anyone can tell me more about the style of this ring, please let me know. I have never seen anything else like it.

I never added mine to this thread. It is similar to yours Lexililac.

Hello! Reviving this thread with my (new to me) ring. I discovered a love of star sapphires when my mom gave me a linde star sapphire ring that her mom had given her; I wore that ring all through high school and college. Now I'm looking to build a collection of natural star sapphire rings. I like wonky sapphires--ones with interesting inclusions, colors, and silks. So this new ring qualifies. She's a 5.38ct light denim blue star sapphire with a pretty good star and some inclusions, set in platinum and with round and baguette diamonds. I'm having great fun looking at her in all sorts of lighting.PXL_20230107_171129033.jpgPXL_20230107_171142808.jpgPXL_20230107_171222773~2.jpg

It's fabulous!
None of my stars are perfect either, but I love them all.

Does it show two stars in the middle
Pic? How fun!

I’m still, years on, looking for my perfect star sapphire. I’ve seen so many but never finally pulled the trigger. I’m going to Sri Lanka in March and will go to Beruwala gem market and see whether my luck is in. I know I’m only going to buy one so it has to be absolutely perfect.

As a warmup exercise, maybe you could recover the Holy Grail. That might be easier...

But seriously, as someone who has 'settled' and settled again, I wish you luck. Your magnificent collection speaks for itself. If anyone can succeed in this quest, you can.

That's actually the main star with the silk inclusion, but it does give that effect :)

I have not shown my latest star addition here, so here goes.... around 5 carats unheated/treated Burmese star ruby. I am in the process of designing a setting for it.it feels bad to have it live in a box, and I feel that the spirit of this stone is important for me in 2019. Color shifts between this and a more ‘pomegranate seed’ color depending.

Gorgeous! I would love to source a star ruby like this, can you recommend your vendor?

that needs a thread of its own

Oh that’s an idea! Maybe I will take some pictures and do a thread on my day trip. That would be so fun. Great suggestion @Daisys and Diamonds

and dont forget to veer off on a few Sri Lankan tangents along the way

food, the sights, fashion.....cricket

I can probably do all of those except the cricket!!

My new 12-ray star sapphire.

The 12 rays come from two superimposed 6-ray stars. The yellowish star is caused by ?hematite ?ilmenite and the whitish star is cause by rutile.

Note that one ray of the yellowish (hematite-ilmenite) star is parallel to the zoning - this is typical of 'black' star sapphires. One ray of the whitish star is perpendicular the zoning. This is normal for rutile stars (which are by far the most common).

@Starstruck8 where did you get that 12-rays beauty from?

It's so beautiful! :kiss2:

@Starstruck8 where did you get that 12-rays beauty from?

I bought it - don't shoot me - from a local B&M shop in Brisbane, Australia. A 12-ray has long been on my wish list. For literally years, their dealer has had his eye out for one. The most common answer he got was, 'Never seen one, don't believe they really exist'. But at Tucson this year, he found an old guy who said, 'I collect them. I have 100 of them'.

I didn't think it would be appropriate to ask the name. But there is a 12-ray guy out there, somewhere in the US...

I have another one, not nearly as good:

The pic is a bit photographically enhanced. In reality, the star is not nearly a bright as that of the new one. This stone comes from the Central Queensland gemfields. I don't know the origin of the new one.

I have another one, not nearly as good:

It matches the metalwork so well that if I glance at it wrong, it looks like an empty concave mounting!

Got this little pink guy on ebay for $30! It's only .7ct but a nice color with a very sharp star.
