So I contacted Bradley to see about that yellow sapphire in his last drop. My BIL didn't like it but of course I had already ran the idea by his GF and she loved it (that's what he gets for not responding to my text) lol.

So she loved it. I was happy as it was a natural stone, I know she liked the idea of that though she was open to other things.

But of course like all his drops of was gone by the time I got to it :(

Luckily he had another that should fit the setting perfectly!

Very nice, Niel! That should make a great ring. Nicely cut, untreated, good saturation, winner all around!

Well I think it has heat. But much more natural than the alternative. Plus I had heard yellow sapphires usually end up with more treatments. He had 2 left and this one seems to fit the setting better so it should look like a nearly custom fit. PLUS the color makes sense with the yg head the setting has. Almost like I hadn't screws up!! should be here this week hopefully.

Re: SIL ring. Sapphire chapter.

I'm afraid to say that if its been heated, without a lab report, it is extremely difficult to know whether it has had further treatments such as beryllium diffusion. There are only a few labs that have the sophisticated (and hugely expensive) equipment necessary to definitively test for it. Since yellow stones in hues in that range are typically Be treated, I would make sure you get a lab report on it, or know that you may have a stone that has been invasively treated - that is, unless Brad already has a lab report on the stone.

Re: SIL ring. Sapphire chapter.

Gorgeous, gorgeous sapphire. Do you have any shots of the ring?

Re: SIL ring. Sapphire chapter.

It sounds like this stone is meant to be his/hers. The colour is fantastic as is the cut AND it is more likely to fit the setting. Is the new owner/reciepient concerned about the chance that this yellow sapphire could be diffused?

Re: SIL ring. Sapphire chapter.

Well that's a tad disappointing for me bout the treatment but no she is OK with it. When I say natural I mean mined. As she was OK with non mined ones (as we found out when looking at vintage ruby rings, as those are common) but preferred natural or course. I was just trying to be vague as that's not an appropriate topic.

She doesn't much know or care to know about other treatments.

I was pretty happy about the color. I thought I did well in those regards. Plus like I said the prongs will make sense. I wish it was a step cut, but toll mostly look like a big spot of color, and less likely to notice the faceting (I'm hoping lol) plus good on budget.

Indylady heres the setting. Stone isn't here yet so no pictures of them together yet.

Also I'm slightly MORE happy with it than I was with the chryso in the fact that its a color and stone people understand. They won't be asking "whats that? Peridot? " all the time.

Re: SIL ring. Sapphire chapter.

I actually had a thought about recommending that stone-- which I tucked away in the back of my mine-- to you. Glad you are getting it. I think it's a great option and a great match.

On the treatment issue, I think the stone is likely to be beautiful and something your SIL will be happy with regardless. If it *is* BE-treated, you would be overpaying for it. Is there an inexpensive report that determines BE treatment? If so, go for it? If not, at a certain point, you just have to be happy if you're happy and move on.

I LOVE sapphires but I totally get how for non-PS-gemstone-afficionados, it's a lot easier to just to say "sapphire" rather than explain how awesome and secret chrysoberyls are. For some of us, having an excuse to talk about the gem is a plus, for others no so much... ;)

Re: SIL ring. Sapphire chapter.

Niel could have the stone sent to AGL for verification. She knows 100% that it is heated, so the Gem Brief stating heat treated will not be a surprise. If AGL cannot determine that it is heat only (suspect diffusion), then they will recommend the more expensive testing, which she can decide to skip or follow through. If lucky, she only needs to spend $60 (and shipping) for a peace of mind. I understand that not everyone is bothered by treatments.

Unpaid like 215. That would still be overpaying?

And yes getting fun obscure stones is something I can appreciate but I don't think she would.

And even when I was just showing it to people and the guy to set it they were annoying with "oh is this, what? A family peridot you inherited? ".... "what an emerald?...." " what is a chrysoberyl? "

This does keep us under budget but I care more about it being great only that she or my BIL does. I don't think they even know what that means.

Re: SIL ring. Sapphire chapter.

I think yes, $200ish is still a lot for diffusion, I think, and you could, as Chrono says, spend the $60 for piece of mind. You can ask TGT what he thinks. I don't think he would knowingly sell diffused gems without disclosure and might have some idea of the sourcing, etc. Since the gem isn't that expensive and you're otherwise happy with it, that might be enough due diligence for you. If he does disclose BE treatment, you might make a lower offer.

But, $200ish is NOT too much for a stone and BIL/FSIL are happy with, is well-cut, looks pretty, fits the setting, comes at the right time and under budget. For example, I like gray spinels and have spent around $150 on one, even though I know the material is considered to have very little value, because I like the look and the price was within the range of what I wanted to spend. It was perfectly fine for me. Similarly, people spend A LOT more than that on simulants, which I personally don't get, but it's what they are happy with for the price they want to spend.

I think, in this case, if you and everyone else is happy with the stone, you should go for. You've already helped them get a much better deal on a much more beautiful ring than they would otherwise. Without all your kind and generous labor, they would have definitely spend too much on an almost certainly BE treated sapphire or simulants or who knows what at a mall jewelry store. This way, they are spending less on a higher quality setting and a lovely, probably heat-only sapphire.

Re: SIL ring. Sapphire chapter.

That makes sense. I feel like Brad wouldn't withhold treatment. And I feel like it might be insulting if I ask him if its got be treatment. :?

If it was BE treated, does that change overtime? Will the stone get uglier? I don't know much about that.

They are happy with it and I think you're right it's just Bout the prettiest natural thing I could find in our limited budget (especially when she wants diamonds in there too!)

They'll be blissfully unaware of this as they don't care and don't really get it. But its sort of a mind clean thing for me. Maybe I should just let it go as its not mine or a ring I'll even see every day.

Re: SIL ring. Sapphire chapter.

Right, if it is BE treated (which it might not be), it's overpriced for pricescope but not for mall store. I think you have the right attitude. However, I don't think it would be insulting AT ALL to ask about treatment as long as you are polite.

Re: SIL ring. Sapphire chapter.

Also--I love the setting. I think the ring will be gorgeous. Please post handshots once its set!

Re: SIL ring. Sapphire chapter.

Niel,
I've followed along with many of your posts about getting this ring made. I think you've gone above and beyond in helping your family with this, and it's really nice of you. I like the sapphire and look forward to seeing it set - I don't have much else to add as I think everything else re: treatment, etc, has been covered well by others.

I do think that since it sounds like your BIL and his GF could care less whether the gem has been treated or not, I probably wouldn't bother with getting it checked by the lab (since you're buying from a reputable vendor. In other circumstances I'd have encouraged the lab as well, but I think personally no in this case).

Regardless, great job and I hope your family members appreciate all of your kind effort on their behalf!

Thanks. I think you're right. I just have to remember its not for me. And its his right budget. If he doesn't care why spend his money.

I'm pretty excited to see it done too! I know its not mine but I feel invested in its outcome.

It shipped today :D

Re: SIL ring. Sapphire chapter.

Its here!
Much more orange than I had expected. I'm OK with that as back when we were looking st that red pear spinel she said she likes orange. But cannot seem to get it to look anything like the photo sent.

Re: SIL ring. Sapphire chapter.

I've been following your hunt for this ring and it has turned out beautiful. The sapphire definitely seems darker than the original pictures. I'm currently on a similar hunt for my own yellow sapphire engagement ring, do you have a link to the vendor you used for the stone?

Re: SIL ring. Sapphire chapter.

It was from gem trader.

Re: SIL ring. Sapphire chapter.

Re: SIL ring. Sapphire chapter.

I think it's really gorgeous, too! Congratulations! I'm sure she will love it.

Thanks. I can't get any good lighting today. Its snowing. Any my house lighting is so so.

Seems to fit the setting perfectly in terms of shape. Only way I'd be happier is if it were a step cut.

Re: SIL ring. Sapphire chapter.

It's GORGEOUS!! I love the color!

Looks great! I have loosely followed the threads, what was the final total if you don't mind sharing? Looks like so much more than his budget... :)

It stayed right around 700 which was the budget so that's good.
