Somebody's Gotta Buy This Piece!

Am I crazy for taking this apart? Do I really need new studs? I'm feeling guilt pangs. I absolutely cannot wear the ring. Doesn't even fit my pinky. So it's either dismantle it or sell it. Ugh!

Take it apart. The stones are lovely, but the setting not so much.

How much was it and what size are the stones? I'd have a hard time taking it apart. I got my studs from this seller, he sources old cuts and sets them in platinum. Very reasonable price, imo, mine are almost 2 ct

$2400 after tax, and the stones are 5.9-6mm. My current studs, which I do love, are 4.8mm, so these stones would be a nice upgrade.

I'd send it away to someone who will enjoy it as is. These are mine, over 6 mm, $2k total. The great part about earrings is that you can go down in clarity and nobody would notice imo.

@lala646 I say do what you want! If you really want earrings, go for it! If not, resell it.

@lala646 to me the most important thing is keeping those two amazingly matched stones together. The setting isn’t super special. I think it’s from the 1930s or 1940s. It isn’t filigree or engraving or piercing or any of those kinds of things that are impossible to remake today. To me whats spectacular about that ring is those two boobs. … I mean two diamonds all snuggled up together. And they can snuggle on your ears instead.

If you wear studs all the time, then putting those into studs makes perfect sense. Plus that style of cut makes lots of sense for earrings because they’re going to be very sparkly from across the room.

What size is the ring? I have tiny hands lol

And going up 1mm-ish in studs doesn’t feel like an appreciable jump. I have a .9 tcw and 1.2 tcw studs, and they essentially feel like the same size. Wish I’d gone for a bigger jump.

If I were you, I would keep the setting intact (in my jewelry box) and take out the stones for the earrings you want. Then you did not destroy the setting, and maybe someday a family member or friend will want it to put in different stones etc. This way, you can use the stones for your earrings and still feel good about it.

I just had David Klass set 2 OEC's I got from Jocelyn. One is .92 and the other is .87. They are set in an 18k yellow gold bezel setting. They look so Big! I hope I can wear them!! I will find a way because I do Love them!!!

I adore that they are chunky and sparkle like crazy!

I have 1.50 MRB in a martini setting. I had 1.75 but they were too large. The MRB are pretty but the OEC's are what I LOVE!!!

IMHO I think the OEC's in your ring look like they would make beautiful earrings!

My earrings were just shipped back to David today. I tried to do what I think is called Guardian posts, they aren't for me. So he's doing jumbo backs for me now.

There are photos's on David's Instagram if you want to look.

Most of all do what makes you happy. :)

I don't think you're crazy! I think you are smart. Yes you need new studs if it's these 2 beauties! Sell your smaller earrings:)

There’s no way that those are .98 carat total weight and 5.9mm each. 6 mm old cuts are like .9 each.

I was thinking the same. Which part is incorrect? The ctw or the mm?

Can I see?

I agree, either the size or ctw must be off. Hopefully the ctw is more but how would you figure that out?

Maybe 5.9 includes the setting? It doesn’t say stone measurement, Just “measurement”. And right below that says 14k

I think going up that much will be pretty noticeable. Here is a photo of two of my studs side by side. The bezel set stone is 4.88 or 4.9 (don't know which is which of that pair). The prong set is 6.09. So close to what you have and the stones in the ring. The bezel of course makes the smaller stone look a tiny bit bigger than it is, but there is an appreciable difference in size despite the different settings.

So my vote would be to make studs, especially if that was why you purchased the ring in the first place. Sell the setting. As @Dreamer_D said, it's not a work of art but will be nice for someone to use. That's my vote.

The mm for the ctw. .50 ct rounds are around 5 mm each.

Someone please buy this gorgeous looking .75 carat old mine cushion so that I stop being tempted. It doesn’t have a lab report but the colour grading looks fairly accurate and a stone looks clean. I’d offer about 500 and see where it went. that’s about half the price that I’ve seen for similar size diamonds at other scrap sellers.

The blue ribbon earrings are 5.1mm. I messaged them. Probably still a good deal if you are looking for WG martinis
