Yes, the size is amazing! Especially since I've had a difficult time finding the size in faceted stones. I love prongs/claws but I'm not sure how I feel about them with a cab. Definitely have lots of exploring to do. :) Is there a thread dedicated to cabs? Hmmm...

Here you go: :wavey:

I saw that asscher too. I am in love with it but too broke to get it, unfortunately. Otherwise, it would already be on its way here. It will make someone very happy.

That's very pretty, love the lavender-ish modifier.

That is so funny Starzin I was just noticing that one today!

Starzin,
That's a sweet oval spinel; it almost matches the colour in your avatar.

I hadn't noticed that!
But I do agree it's very pretty and I haven't seen a spinel quite that colour in a long time. It apparently has a little sleepiness to give the lovely glow in this picture but the other photos show that it will still be clear enough to be sparkly.

My word... that is a stunner!

Probably it is because although one is paying for a nearly 2 carat sapphire, it faces up as large as a 1 carat sapphire due to the depth. The cutting is very pretty though.

And probably won't look as saturated as in that handshot photo
Look at how red the hand is

The inside of my hand photographs that red in sunlight. I agree with Chrono though that that stone should face up much larger, like 6.9 or 7 mm for its weight.

I find it really difficult to read his photo. At least from my own purchase experience, the stones look less saturated hence the guessing :((

For anyone interested in Mahenge spinels, Yvonne Raley posted in her latest blog entry that she has a newly acquired cache of older, intensely colored stones. There seem to be about 30 gems in all, including various shades (peachy, hot pink, magenta) and shapes (oval, emerald cut, marquis, cushion). A few are cabochons. Here is the link, which includes photos of about 20 of the stones -

http://cecileraleydesigns.blogspot.com/

Yvonne writes that she'll be listing a few of these at a time on her web site at https://www.etsy.com/shop/yvonneraley between now and the end of the year. From what I've seen posted there already, some of the Mahenges are lightly included, but the color is so intense that it tends to mask imperfections.

Just an FYI, Yvonne is having a 10 percent off sale on all of her gemstones starting next Sunday, October 19 that runs through the following Sunday, October 26.

Diane
Most, if not all look to have cut issues.

That's true, Greg, but most of the prices are pretty reasonable for Mahenge spinel in such saturated colors. For example, among the sold items I saw these emerald-cut earring stones for only $350/carat - https://www.etsy.com/transaction/234757570 It's a trade-off, because the 2009 color is very hard to find nowadays.
At $350 a carat those stones would definitely be worth a look.

Yes, none of these are precision cut, but the size is good, color is good, and pricing is lower than most current pricing due to the circumstances that these were obtained under.

I got one that is 1.95 cts; is a bit more included than I prefer and has a tiny window - but I paid an insanely good price for a nice size gem, almost 2 cts and faces up well I think (8.5 x 6.5 mm, oval cut) so it feels big to me :). It was extremely affordable and I was happy to get it - I've owned some beautiful mahenges, but I was afraid that one this size would be beyond my means at this point. (I don't think mine was pictured in that photo as I think I got it just before those pics were taken).

Diane is correct that it's a trade off, but for a lot of us it's one we are happy to make! I had a gorgeous older material mahenge that had cut issues, it came from one of Yvonne's older parcels. Sent it off to Jerry for a recut and it came back completely stunning! I don't think I'll do that with my big one though; it's the type of gem that has some issues, but they're minor. I think once it's set they won't be a problem at all. I'm very happy with my new gem, I'll post done pics on a new thread soon in case anyone is interested.

Greg the 1-2 ct gems aren't priced at 350/ct, the $350/ct were smaller gems from the same parcel but from a smaller size category, so lower price per carat

It says in that listing that spinel is never treated. Spinel is treated, more and more so lately. It's still not commonly treated as sapphire, but I would definitely send out any high priced spinels to AGL.

I think the biggest worry these days with red spinel are increasing proliferation of synthetics, which is a huge reason to send any expensive stone to a reputable lab.

Hey TL :wavey: When I talked to AGL this summer, they said that they had been seeing more treated spinel.

what kind of treatment are you talking about? oil treatment? I heard that some spinel are heated. What kind of improvement heat treatment does on spinel?
