I'll simply suggest people do their own online research and they will find how much of an issue this is for the USA. There has even been an admission from Canada as to their missteps in this situation.

Coming to the table to work out a solution would be preferable but for now, that's not happening apparently. As I stated in an earlier post, I hope a solution is found quickly for both Canada's and the USA's good.

To suggest this is just to attack Canada is wrong and I would like people to realize this current situation.

It's an attack pure and simple by one man intent to put asunder. The "reasons" have been more than dealt with, and then to suggest the annexation of a nation of proud Canadians with a rich history and culture that is autonomous and separate from yours defies logic. That man is dangerous beyond words, and yet you follow along. Have we learned nothing in history?

Pearl clutching? Really? Whole livelihoods and economies are at stake here and you think it's pearl clutching?

Good riddance to you.

Hmmmm, first someone suggests they should be our 51st state and when the idea is rebuffed, a tariff is imposed. Could it be an ego thing? Get laughed at, impose tariff in hopes of crashing an economy so the country can be annexed?

We have a drug problem, we have an undocumented immigrant problem. Both problems have been kicked down the road by whomever is in power for decades and I've become cynical enough to think the problem isn't solved because it's such an effective platform for winning elections. I have to question why that's so. Why was a private citizen allowed to tank last year's bi-partisan border bill? Why aren't companies who hire undocumented workers severely penalized? Why aren't there US citizens vying for the jobs they claim undocumented workers steal from them? So many questions and too few answers.
The Canada becoming a 51st state was never considered seriously but a closer working relation was and is vitally important.

I totally agree with penalizing companies hiring the undocumented. It should and needs to stop. Americans have to pay for taxes, SS, and medical insurance out of their paychecks and for the most part, are not subsidized by our government as the illegals have been.

Canadians are and should be very proud and no, the USA doesn't want to annex your country. Sorry if pearl clutching offends, I just didn't see any facts being presented as to why this happened.

This imposed tariff is for Canada to help us in tightly closing the border into the USA for illegal immigration. Our country will suffer too but something needs to change.

I hope you stay with the conversation, your imput is valuable as is the exchange of views.

Y'all know what? I'm protecting my peace where I can because I have real things happening on a daily basis. I'm not here to change anyone's mind. That ship has sailed.

The folk who insist on eating the brown straight out the shoot. They can go right ahead because I'm not about that life. I don't want or need sepsis.

To keep the thread on track, this is about tariffs, something that will affect not only Americans but also those whom we share a continental shelf with. Thus far Europe has not gotten involved. Its early yet.

Are you saying the president lied because his words are clear.

From the Jan 7 Financial Post. U.S. president-elect escalated his remarks about making Canada part of the U.S. during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Tuesday. And he reiterated that he intends to put “substantial” tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico.

Asked if he would use military force to annex Canada, he replied “no — economic force".

FYI, I'm going to Africa in a couple weeks. I've told people that if I decide to pet a lion and it eats me, don't be sad; it's how I want to go, especially given the current state of things. :oops2:

I hate when people say things like “he wasn’t serious” etc. I’ve heard this so many times. Words matter. Especially from people in power. Why do we have to parse out what’s serious and what’s not?! And what insane thing uttered is meant or not?

I heard him say those words about 51st state but also felt he was joking. I never considered him to be serious about annexing Canada. Even Canada's PM said he was a skillful negotiator and used the annexing comment to distract people from the rise in prices for the USA citizens and was not taking him seriously.

Canada is a great neighbor and I hope an agreement can be reached soon. We have wonderful Canadian friends and want this settled quickly.

You know, there's a giant asteroid coming. I figure if we all get a bunch of magnets, we may be able to get it here sooner:lol::tongue:

Remember the adage that says when someone shows you who they are, believe them. Posted today on the president's Truth Social site:

"We pay hundreds of Billions of Dollars to SUBSIDIZE Canada. Why?
There is no reason. We don't need anything they have. We have unlimited Energy, should make our own Cars, and have more Lumber than we can ever use. Without this massive subsidy, Canada ceases to exist as a viable Country. Harsh but true! Therefore, Canada should become our Cherished 51st State. Much lower taxes, and far better military protection for the people of Canada — AND NO TARIFFS!"

Ahem, in my best Charleston Heston imitation: You'll have to pry that $25.00 avocado from my cold dead hands (but do it before @Arcadian's asteroid hits and @ShinyPink's lion poops her out all over it.)

I just want to say what a relief it is to find this post here. I was honestly nervous about seeing how PriceScope has fared since Jan 20 & I'm not disappointed. This American is truly disheartened & concerned...

I am sorry if you think America hates Canada, we don't. We love the citizenry and their country. With all the pearl clutching going on, it isn't mentioned that we are loathe to have these tariffs levied but our country needs help undoing much damage that has occurred. Our country has reached out to these countries and asked for help in stemming the border crossings and fentanyl and terrorists being moved into the USA. We have not received any assistance and therefore, the tariffs. I pray our country can reach an agreement with Canada that would benefit all of us.

Please be assured this tariff is not in place because of any hate factor, we need help to keep out people who may want to harm all of us. We are seeking assistance and that's the bottom line.

i visited Canada with an American, all good =)2

Thus far Europe has not gotten involved.

Yeaaaah... considering the current US administration stretched their greedy little paws towards Greenland and threatened Denmark with tariffs "at a very high level"... I wouldn't quite say we haven't gotten involved. And while no economic isolationist policies have been implemented yet, the general view of the US as a "reliable trade partner" is definitely starting to shift a bit towards "hostile country" instead.

There's still time to reverse that, but I'm not counting on it, judging by how things have been going so far. You know, expect the worst.

Don't worry - changes to trades and tariffs will hit Europe and UK etc. eventually.

DK :roll2:

Folks, deleting a politician's name out of an article does not follow the spirit of the rules. Talk about the policies, do not mention the politicians or political parties/elections or pissing contests start. Do not post things like XXX has made an awful/amazing decision today to do ABC. You can discuss policies that were put into place. XX policy was put into place today, economists say XX will be the effect. etc. is fine.

We are not going to moderate this much more, it will just be shut down. Please do not make us do that.

Thank you Ellen. This is a thread I made to stay informational. This is affecting us all in more than a few ways.

I would hope that people use the ignore function (highly recommended) as there are some would would love nothing more than to rile people and make a thread like this go away.

However, these policies should never be ignored.

Wide sweeping tariffs of this magnitude will affect the price of all goods and raw materials.
  • Medicine that we and our loved ones depend on considering how many of those raw materials are made in China
  • Automobiles made in Canada and Mexico
  • The price of shipping things, because Oil has been included
  • Heck the price of paving that pothole in front of your house (oil products)
  • Food stuffs that we get from other countries in the US
  • Prices of things like fabric. Being I'm a sewist that is huge.
  • Need a new computer or phone? guess where those components come from?
  • And even our hobby here. this is going to affect the prices of those raw materials to make our jewelry.
At the rate we're going, some of us will be priced out of just being able to exist.

Again, ignore is a wonderful thing. Protect your peace.

I think like lots of places, its going to be different in some ways. You'll have to same folks doing things of course but...

I can only speak for myself: as much as I love my gems and jewelry, for me, the hobby is on hold. As it is, I'm thankful I have a stash of fabric because my belt is on very very tight but I can sew what we need in as far as clothing. I've got a lot of lovely gems, beautiful jewelry, but, I also gotta eat. I gotta feed my household, I have to be employed somewhere.

I'm in a climate where I can (if the doggos don't destroy it) have a raised garden that makes things year round. My neighbor behind me does this so, I'll get it a try with surefire things like tomatoes first...lol

My worry is what it does to our elderly and the most vunerable...those on fixed incomes. Heck my own parents in fact! And those who have served with distinction, like my father, who retired with over 40 years in the military, who might not be taken care of as they should.

And the worry of policy shifts like this, well... lets just say we were told but some thought they were a joke. Anyone with a brain was alarmed by it, certainly some waited to see not if but when they would happen.

I can’t post the article but looks like the tariff on Mexico is on hold for a month as they’ve come to an agreement of sorts

10,000 promised border guards won't stop fentanyl from entering the US. Most of it comes through points of entry. The border governors made the same promise to Texas in 2022 and it didn't happen. This will be claimed a victory but it's just a save face moment for a US policy that is causing more problems than anticipated and a chess move from Mexico to get an annoying voice to shut up.

That is such good news, Missy. Thank you for sharing it and I hope the agreements come to fruition.

To put all the onus on fentanyl is wrong. There are a plethora of problems that our country is struggling over with open borders including the threat of terrorism. Even Mexico is tired of all the migration through their country. Canada tightening their borders would further enhance their safety and threats of terrorism. It could be a win-win for all.

Everything is a game with the politicians. IDK if you've read the book "Art of the Deal" but that's his standard IMO

I thought it was good news too but as with everything time will tell. Thanks Sunrise

It appears talks with Panama may have been successful also and that the outreach of a communist country will be removed from it's control in the Panama Canal.

To put all the onus on fentanyl is wrong.

This is true especially since most of the drug enters this country hidden in vehicles driven by Americans who bring it here through legal points of entry.
Even Mexico is tired of all the migration through their country.

If that's the case they should put the soldiers at their southern border.
