I know very few stones can be set in a tension setting due to issues of hardness, inclusions, etc. But, could a well cut spinel be set into a tension setting?

The setting would most likely be titanium.

Thank you all!

Sapphire and garnets get into tension settings, so why not spinel

Thanks for the encouragement, Ana.

Now I''m just deciding which "occasion" will allow me to purchase it!

Hello everybody,
I haven''t been here for a while (luckily busy) and hope you are all well.

Rube,
yes, we have set spinels in tension. No problem.
However, I found that goldsmiths are timid with stones they don''t know so well, but if you insist and take the risk on yourself then spinel stands everything sapphire would.

A spinel is not a diamond, however. I have a spinel which, given its bright red color may be more prone to fractures and inclusions than other spinels, but it may have been damaged while being set (by an expert setter). I just urge caution; I am not a professional, but I have lived through the problematic setting of a spinel.

Here is a thread about the setting of a red spinel I owned. Having found the old thread for the purposes of this thread, I think I had better take a minute to update it after I post this message!

Thread on AGBF's Red Spinel Being Set

PS-While I as looking for this thread I came across one in which I was discussing the setting of the spinel before I decided on how I wanted to set it. In that thread, Ana cautioned against using a tension setting for a colored stone unless she knew it inside and out. Ana is VERY smart!!!
