I love the old cut stones, too! Your ring is really beautiful!

Yah, Congrats! Beautiful.

I must say that stone is just heavenly--unique and different with such character and beauty. Congrats on getting the stone & ring of your dreams--gorgeous.

OTM, congrats! Your stone is beautiful, and the setting is wonderful as well, looks great on your hand! I love the basket detail, so pretty.

Congratulations, it is absolutely gorgeous!

Congratulations and welcome to The Old Cuts Club (OCC)! Aren't they unique beauties?!?

I really like the prongs too, they look like flat prongs, which I also have. I was wondering though...your stone looks more like an Old Mine Cut (OMC) than an OEC what with the cushiony shape and those fewer facets on the pavillion...unless it's an optical illusion from the photos?

What a cool stone! Sorry, I guess I was confused over whether or not you had gotten the original stone that you loved. Welcome to the growing OEC/OMC club on PS! :)

FacetFire, is your stone in your avatar a Transitional Cut? I keep meaning to ask you...

Yay...another one joins the club! Your ring is absolutley stunning and I love the scroll work on the shank. Congrats.

It''s beautiful! Congrats!

That''s what I was thinking too. Between the "look" of the stone, and the diameter measurements...

But regardless, it''s a beautiful ring!! Congrats!

It's funny you say that, because I thought the same thing (again, based on my PS research) and asked the jeweler if it was, in fact, and OMC rather than an OEC. She had a perplexed look on her face, and then insisted it was an OEC...my guess is she didn't know the difference. I believe this is one of the only old cuts they'd ever had in the store - they mainly deal with new (to clarify, this was not the same store that created my setting). The stone was taken on a trade-in/upgrade (can you believe someone would give up my baby?) and it was just sitting in the case. I asked to see it, and the rest is history! Maybe their disinterest contributed to our getting such a great deal, who knows? Don't get me wrong - they were very nice and quite knowledgeable in general - they just aren't card carrying members of the OCC!

It's interesting to me that more people "on the outside" (including jewelers!!!) aren't familiar with or interested in these stones. This forum is definitely home to the country's (the world's?) largest population of OMC/OEC aficianados. Beyond this community, not so much

So, to be completely correct - should I change my title to "my new OMC/cushion beauty"? Gotta get these things right, after all
28.gif

OTM, it does indeed sound as if they weren''t familiar with an OMC.

I''d take it to someone who specializes in old stones. Especially if you''re insuring it, you''d want the correct title on the policy, for if God forbid something happened to it, you''d want it replaced with what you had.

If there isn''t anyone near you, Rich Sherwood and Dave Atlas (oldminer on the forums) both post on here, and specialize in apprasing these stones, you could send it to one of them.

Thanks Ellen,

Great idea. Isn't Dave Atlas in Philly? That's even easier to get to than NYC - I could just make an appointment & bring it to him. I agree, I want the appraisal to be correct.

You''re welcome, and yes, he is in Philly. That''s great that you are close to him!

Beautiful stone and the setting is just perfect with it!

That is a lovely ring.

Congrats on the engagement!

Gorgeous stone and I love the setting! Congratulations!

Your ring is perfect for your antique diamond. Very nice!

overthemoon, I would definitely take your stone to someone more knowledgeable in old cuts...just so you know what you really have. It''s more to satisfy curiosity, and it''s better for your insurance policy to note exactly what it is. Enjoy!

It''s such a stunning ring!! Congratulations!

Thanks again to all of you for your kind words! I am so thrilled with my ring, just cant stop staring at it (only becomes a problem while driving

Surfgirl - I agree totally. I think I''ll call Dave Atlas after I return from vacation on Monday (leaving Thursday for Cape Cod - which begs the question: to wear the ring at the beach, or no?).

I am sure he''ll provide me with great info. I already submitted my current appraisal to the insurance co. (with the Old Euro designation) but my guess is I could update it after seeing Mr. Atlas(?)

Have a great holiday everyone!

I look forward to a more informed appraisal! And if I were you, I wouldn''t wear my ring to the beach. I dont wear anything to the beach that I cant stand to lose. You wont find another stone just like that again so....

Agreed! Hope you have a great 4th of july holiday:)

Gasp! I don''t know how I missed this! That ring and stone is GORGEOUS!! Congratulations!

*M*

Congratulations on a beautiful ring. Hope you had a wonderful holiday and come back with more pics!

I did have a wonderful holiday, thanks! And, yes, my beauty stayed at the house when I went to the beach

We (my ring and I) are getting to know each other, and so far we're getting along great!

I have to say, I'm a little obsessed about the prongs - they just seem so, well, dainty...and there seems to be very little "overhang" of the claw to hold the stone in. Perhaps it's because I fear losing my super cool and unique old stone, perhaps it's because I've never been responsible for such an investment in the form of jewelry...but I find myself wishing the prongs were heartier, with more overhang. Is it possible to "fortify" them, make them thicker? Does thicker necessarily mean sturdier? (keep it clean folks
20.gif
) If I even bang the ring lightly on something I check to see if the stone is loose. The jeweler insists the stone is locked in tight (they probably think I'm wackadoo because I asked for reassurance several times before I even left the store
19.gif
) I thought I'd get over it as I lived with it, but I haven't...

Overall I'm THRILLED (over the moon!) with the setting, as well as the jeweler and the craftsmanship...am I just being paranoid?

OTM...your ring is to die for! I love antique rings with old stones!! Congrats on both of your engagements!

Great stone! Welcome to the OEC/OMC lovers'' club!
