Thinking About Mounting My Ruby

So I saw this E-ring over in SMTB:

And I REALLY liked it. It is very graceful and does a good job integrating the round with ring, using the taper of the pears. Here diamond is about the same size as my ruby. Can't figure out why I didn't think of it before! The ruby in question is a stunner that I finagled out of Gene early in 2012. His photo, as usual, is exactly the color of my stone in RL. I love that about him.

So, my lazy photoshop skills came up with a mockup. It would be 14 or 18kt yellow gold, from ID Jewelry. They will select the pears, they do such a nice job with that.

What do you think? Is it too puny? What do you think of 14K versus 18K, is 18K yellow that much richer? Should I go with something a bit bigger? Should I halo this thing? I dunno . . .

Ugh! I can't decide!! :errrr:

I think a ruby in that sort of setting would be perfect! Yes, dainty but not puny. idk about 14k vs. 18k, I think the 14k would be yellow enough but maybe you would prefer more of a richer contrast. Personally I think a halo (even a delicate one) would overpower that gorgeous glowy stone.

OMG, so that ruby is magnificent! Its Winza, right? Am I correct in remembering it from his website, or did he cut it for you?

Anyway, I LOVE that ring and said as much in her thread. It is so simple, yet so classically elegant. Yes, you ruby would look lovely, especially with side pears like hers. And I'm sure she would be honored knowing that already others have used it as an inspiration.

Go iLander, go!!

I really like the setting but I have a question for you. You've asked whether it's too puny? What size rings do you normally wear? Do you normally have chunkier rings? The reason I ask is that I have a number of rings this size and feel that I've outgrown them as they're not big enough (which is silly because of course they are but hey, it's mind shrinkage)!!! The other question you need to ask yourself is if it you feel it's too puny the only real way to amp up the size is with a halo - do you want to do that?

I think it's perfect that way!

Interesting question. I often want to buy stones between 5-6 mm am worried about how to set them. LD, do you always halo these?

I love this idea!! You might possibly consider a thin bezel around each stone too. It would add a little size boost and may help connect the stones visually a bit. Personally I prefer 18k gold as it is noticeably richer to my eyes.

I'll just add that I'd like those hands to go with that design please :praise:

I think it is beautiful, classic, elegant, timeless. AND because you have beautiful slender feminine fingers, that ring will look wonderful on you!

Do it!!

Go for the 18k. I think 14 is too yellowy where 18has that richer color to it. I think the few $ more you spend really will be noticable. And yeah i love that setting! But one reason its so flattering on her hand is because her fingers are so tiny ( im a bit green withh envy over here) so it might depend on the size the ring would be. I love tbe bezel idea someone threw out too. Like that pear round three stone over at JbEG

Will you feel a bit naked with the coverage or do you need big and bold? I think the design shown is very elegant but dainty. 18k yellow is my personal favourite for the colour. It looks very rich and expensive.

If your hands look like the original owner's hands, then I'd say that does not look "puny" at all - it looks perfectly well proportioned!

I love the idea of the 18K yg as well - punch and contrast which will also bring out the POW of your ruby and make it appear larger. I love that setting and sounds like a great plan, especially having IDJ work their magic on pricing and pear side stones!!

Its gonna be a beauty!! (your DH isn't going to make us wait for this one, too, is he??? I can't take it when he does that to all of us!!) ;))

It will definitely a good idea to mount your ruby, that suits you!

I think your ruby would go very well in that setting. It being a colored stone it will have more visual impact.

Have you thought about using rose gold?

Knockout ruby, iLander; I'm not a red stone lover but that one makes me drool.

The ring is really lovely -- but it is delicate. Whether you'd wear it for a long time or not depends on whether you like that look or would eventually wish for more finger coverage. If so, what about a three-stone w/rounds instead of pears? I kind of agree that a halo would not show that beauty off enough.

I vote for 18k yg -- nice & rich with enough color contrast.

Another vote for 18k yellow.

I'm going to be honest because you've asked. I used to buy smaller stones if they attracted me but I stopped because I realised that if I set them in a normal setting, I didn't wear them because of the lack of coverage. So, yes, if I get a smaller than I wanted stone, I have to halo or a similar type design to increase finger coverage. If I do that, I find I wear them. I can't tell you how many smaller stones I've set and just sit in rings and don't get worn. Perhaps I should just yank them all out of the settings and sell them!

By the way, I know this is my mucky mind, but your title thread did make me chuckle!! It may be Brit terminology but it could take on a whole different meaning to loving a gemstone ;)

LD, if you don't stop it, I'll have to call over our author Enerchi to write another steamy scene for you... :Up_to_something:

I don't mind it if the ruby has an illegitimate offspring that is bigger and redder.

Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss! :naughty:

GEEZ! Leave the room for a minute, and the girls get dirty on ya!

Lol!   :D

I am thinking LD and Chrono have a point. I am afraid it's delicacy might get on my nerves after a bit. It's a really nice stone, and I don't want it to be overwhelmed, but I also don't want to downplay it.

I will fess up and say that it is currently set. In the mother of all halos. In a halo that will eat all other halos. But in a very feminine way. It will take delicate bites, while going "nom, nom" and eating other halos. Now I wonder if this new 3 stone is going too far the other way. . .

I guess I'll have to post a pic of that, won't I?

You really must post pics. You can't give a description like that without 'em.

Oh so funny! Yes pics are needed and I hate to say it but going from the mother of all halos to be seeing without clothes on is a bit extreme!!!

No really, iLander, we're just fine imagining the HALO FROM ANOTHER PLANET, because there is nothing the least bit unusual about your description - we hear all the time about cannibalizing rings...yawn, having a hard time staying awa....zzzzzzz :snore: :snore: :snore:

Ya think?!!!!

Oh, she zings us one, withholds information, leaks information, then has nothing to back it up! :nono:

Yep, leads everybody to believe this poor little ruby needs a home and she likes tiny weenie settings when REALLY she's secretly wearing "BIG BLINGER"

Ha, ha! You guys are such a hoot!

Okay, I am doing the big reveal, the Mother of All Halos!

Actually, I think the ruby is holding it's own against a 14mm setting. The setting is actually bigger than my size 7 finger. Those are not tiny, rich girl size fingers, like a 3 or something, those are utilitarian, size 7 fingers that actually do stuff.

And I do like it. It's sparkly, and a full carat of white diamonds. But all those little diamonds give me the heebie-jeebies. I'm afraid one will fall out when I'm not looking. Which means it will be a delicate "dinner party" ring. I don't go to dinner parties. :nono:

I want something more wearable, more everyday. I hate to have this sit, the color and glow are just amazing.

So, whaddaya think?
