Thoughts on a possible OEC/transitional

Hi everyone,

I have found a diamond ring at a store here, it is inscribed "1946", but the diamond could be older. This is the second non-modern cut i've seen IRL, so I don't have much experience from them. But would you say this is an OEC? I thought it looked very pretty IRL. There really are so few old cuts where I am, so they're few and far in between, I'm afraid I won't come across one in a while if I don't get this.

Price point is around 7-9000usd.
No cert
Approx 2.50 ct
Approx K SI1 according to a gemologist who's seen it irl (there's a darker inclusion on the girdle, i guess it can be hidden by a prong if I remake the ring)

What do you guys think of the diamond? I looked at it through a loupe, it had nice and even patterns. A lot of fire, compared to my MRB.

For reference, the 3-stone ring is my engagement ring, GIA excellent, I-color.

Bare in mind that the ring hasn't had a thorough cleaning, but it looked eyeclean to my eyes, exept for the black inclusion on the left.

I'd really appreciate some input.

Transitional over OEC would be my guess.
other than that it’s really hard to tell much from the video. You wouldn’t happen to have any still photos & up close showing the pattern?

Thanks. I can see the pattern in my videos, not as good as in still pictures, but the quality worsens when I uppload the videos on youtube.

I didnät take any still pictures.

Oh crap. Oops! i somehow totally missed that still picture (vendor shot?) under your videos.

I do like the looks of this stone.
If I wanted a transitional over a ‘classic’ OEC and wasn’t married to the idea of a small table
if I was looking for a larger stone in a lower color but with a nice faceting pattern and would choose a dark inclusion near the girdle over diffuse many many inclusions that mask the facet patterning-
this is how you might do it with trade offs on a smaller budget.

you might need to sink some money into the setting tho to make it secure and worry free to wear.

id be curious if there’s a tint that would be mentioned in a lab report. And thinking it won’t be yellow. if it went muddy olivey in some lighting - that might turn me away.
that and if near that dark inclusion by the girdle - if that’s a feather existing near it that is super noticeable and breaking the plain of the girdle. Something else to think about.

while this price range isn’t expensive for this carat weight - it’s not chump change for many people. Buying without lab report is a gamble and more so for those who haven’t seen of these in real life.

Seems to have a nice checkerboard pattern. How easy would it be to get the stone certed if you bought it? If there are no structural issues (like a feather) it seems like a good price.

I would also call it a transitional. There's nothing wrong with that. I think it may be a bit warmer than a K, but hard to tell. I have a stone that is similar. Mine looks like a transitional at times, but also sometimes like an OEC. It just depends on the view. It is a GIA K if this helps you.

It does look checkerboard-y and has a lot of attractive on/off activity -- I agree it looks warmer than a K -- with a large table? -- maybe a bit leaky under the table? -- is it shallow, do you know the depth?

You say the price point is $7,000 to $9,000 -- that seems like quite a large range -- if it was $7K and you like it and you louped it, I'd say jump on it -- if it is $9K then I'd want a little more certainty about the diamond specs -- is there a return policy long enough you could send it to an independent appraiser with old cut knowledge like David Atlas to get his feedback on it?

It was actually the first time I really got to appreciate an "older" cut like this, so I was mostly blown away by the fire and colors. It's an auction, I think the lowest accepted bid is about 7000usd.

I would like to have it certified if I get it (if that's possible).

I agree though, I felt it looked warmer than a K, but I don't know how much the enivoronment affects the color, I was in a 18th century building, with red, brown matts on the walls....:(2 But I did see some tint from the side compared to my "I".

This was under a daylight lamp (it's what they called it), is this what you mean by "muddy olive"? I didn't think this video was showcasing the color/sparkle in the correct way so I didn't post it.

I talked to the gemologist, he had a look at it again, he says it's a true K.

He also had a better look at the inclusion, and says it's not on the surface. I'm possibly looking at putting it in a halo setting.

Can you get the millimeter dimensions of the stone? Does the $7k include the buyer's premium?

Yes it does. I can ask for dimensions.

I think it’s really quite lovely and I like the setting. It looks huge and gorgeous on your finger! Love that checkerboard pattern, definitely transitional. It won’t have a puffy crown from the side view like a true OEC, but I think it’s a pretty stone. I’d still guess lower than a K despite what the gemologist says. It looks like an L/M but I could obviously be wrong - has a browner / yellow undertone.

If the “muddy brown” look bothers you in some lighting, don’t get it just because it’s a good deal. Love it in all lightings! If you feel like you have to sweet talk yourself into it bc the price is tempting, don’t get it. Some people like tint and others don’t. Putting it next to your I color is not going to do her any favors though! Do you expect to wear them at the same time?

But if you find yourself really pining for it, put in a bid. I think it’s very pretty but because it’s got some clarity issues, you already think you’d need to rework the setting (and I’d get it checked out anyways), and it’s a lower color - just buy it for what it is versus thinking it’s the deal of the century. Buy what you love!

No idea.
I WON the auction!!! I’ll be picking up the ring on Monday, so I’ll know more then.

Congrats! Look forward to seeing more pics! The size looks great on your hand.

This ring and stone for that price would be a solid YES for me, barring any hidden issues. It’s a checkerboard Transitional that looks lively and huge. 8.7mm is a great diameter (trade off is larger table but this is typical for that cut type). I love the original setting, how lively the stone is, and how it looks on your hand. I’m jealous of your wonderful find!

Thank you!!! I really thought it was a good price point, I mean I haven’t been able to find anything even close to this size within my budget. So this came as a lovely surprise. I adore the facets, I thought it looked magical irl, totally trumped my pretty well cut mrb.

This was the weirdest thing, I had an old account which I couldn’t remember the password for….so I ended up registering a new account. somehow it jumped back to my old account.

I was coming in to say I don’t see any raging red flags, but it’s hard to say much more from the videos. It looks pretty good, though there is a little laziness/chaotic patterning under the table which is why it looks a little darker there than in the periphery when you move it around. But I don’t think that’s a deal breaker since you saw it live and loved it! These oldies are never perfect. I think the price for the carat weight is really good, and the setting is lovely, so nice find! I hope you enjoy it!

PS my diamond also has a black inclusion on the girdle. I can see it in macro pics but not with my eyes. I don’t mind it because it’s part of the reason I could afford it!

I’m sooo excited to get to know this stone (and ring). It’s quite dirty I think, judging from the bright cut mele. So I can’t wait to put it in my ultrasonic.

I absolutely love the pattern! It's something I have been looking for for ages. It's so so beautiful... CONGRATULATIONS! I'm sure you will love that ring! The price is great!

Hi everyone!!

I have the ring now! I louped it, really, that corner speckle is the only inclusion.

I can’t seem to take any good still pictures.
