Thoughts on putting stones two color grades apart in a band

I've been collecting small diamonds to make an eternity band that I'm hoping to get made this year. They're all branded H&A stones, mostly Hs and a few Is, just over 20 points, so under 4 mm. I need just a couple more and I haven't been able to find what I need. I can purchase a few Gs with perfect numbers. Would the difference between a G and an I be noticeable in this size? I'm planning on yellow gold if that makes a difference. I'm pretty color-sensitive and can see the difference between an H and an I in larger stones from the side but not in the little ones. Would a mix of G to I be too much of a difference?

I wouldn’t think the contrast in that size would be noticeable to the naked eye, especially if you separate the G and I on either side of the H.

I think given these are all in the “near colorless” zone you should be fine!

No it wouldn’t matter to me in a band with stones that size.

I recently went through a similar dilemma with my five stone project. I have a bunch of JK stones and a couple HI — all GIA. The JKs were 5mm and the HIs were 4mm. While I could see the color difference in some lighting and in some angles it was so much more subtle than I expected. And that was comparing near colorless to lightly tinted shades. Here’s some pictures I took that I think are pretty accurate.

I feel like the difference between I and G in yellow gold and with smaller diamonds would be even less apparent.

Thank you all for your comments!

@Dreamer_D , really appreciate the photos! I can hardly see the difference, so really feeling better about getting those Gs.

I would just ask the maker to make sure the Gs weren’t next to the Is!

Are you the type who will always be looking for the difference? Like will it be mind clean?

Personally, on their own G/H are very white to my untrained eyes, and I could only detect a tint when they are right next to an E.

DK :))

At ~5 mm I colors look softer and less clinical than G colors to my eyes. It’s not a stark difference but I definitely would not want them next to each other. If it’s a full eternity I would put them on opposite sides.

I'll definitely ask to separate the Is and the Gs. The mind-clean thing is really the only concern, but I think as long as I can't see it (and luckily my vision is not getting any better), it'll be mind-clean enough.

Great idea! I'll have them on the opposite sides separated by the Hs.

What a fun project! Please show us when it's done.

Thanks! I'll most l ikely need some help along the way, so will definitely be posting once I have all the stones.

Figured I'd give a quick update. The stones arrived today and I really can't see any difference. Not sure if it's just me, but I'm totally happy with them. Anyone see a difference? IMG_8769.jpgIMG_8794.jpg

“Can you see any differences among these white dots?” :lol-2:

No. No I cannot.

And I’m so glad you can’t either! What a beautiful collection! You are doing a full eternity, right? What kind of setting are you considering?

Thanks so much, Dreamer! Really glad to hear you can’t see the color difference either. Yes, planning on a full eternity. Not yet set on the design. Keep going back and forth between bezel and a headset type setting. I know i really want a satin yellow gold finish with some metal showing. Recently have been kind of obsessing over this one, but not sure how it would look in yellow gold. I really need to make up my mind!

This would be very smooth but it would also be deep with your size stones so a thick rail of metal. Could be lovely with engraving. Maybe this is helpful for picturing it in YG:

I like this setting that I think DK made for mrs-b. The prongs are more like bezel style so its probably very smooth, but it lets you see the sides of the diamonds and less metal, which I like thought I get the appeal of full bezels/beads.

Since you ask -
Probably power of suggestion but is the box of three the g’s?

I think your project sounds wonderful!

I do think if you maybe might have a preference if the g’s are grouped together or dispersed to decide and then ask that to be done by the setter.
It may be lighting dependent - it may not bother - but one of those things ‘if I had a choice’ may as well make it instead of hindsight.

Yes, those are the three Gs! Your color perception is way better than mine! And definitely think I'll ask to have the Gs together surrounded by Hs and separated from the Is, thank you!

Thank you for those IG links! I love Mrs. B's eternity, but really want more metal for this project. It's a great point though about the thickness/height needed for the stones. The band in the photo I found is 3 cts and over 2 mm thick, so I was hoping for similar proportions, but not sure if it would be sticking out too much off the finger.

How deep are your diamonds?

They’re 2.4 mm deep. Would the rails be the same height or do they need to be taller than the diamonds?

If it is bead set then I would expect the rails to be maybe 0.2mm taller than the girdles of the diamonds? At least that's what I would aim for, or even less if possible. I would like the crowns to protrude above the rails if possible or be flush at most. So assuming the crown is about 13% then the girdle might be 2mm and the overall height might be 2.3... that isn't too thick I don't think. Width might be 5.5mm assuming they can keep the rails at about 0.75mm thick. It would be a beautiful and substantial band!

This is awesome! Way more helpful than ChatGPT! Thanks so much, Dreamer!

OMG I totally laughed out loud at this. I am not an AI stan so I'm happy to beat it this once.

Sent a request for a quote to DK! So excited to finally get this going! Thanks again @Dreamer_D ! I'm sure I'll be asking for more help along the way.
