Thoughts on this OEC

That photograph is so weird you may want to ask them to send you other pictures though because the strange way it’s photographed it might pick up the warmth way more than in real life.

Thanks! I ended up contacting the seller, waiting to hear back

I saw this one too but the stone didn't really speak to me based on pictures and the setting isn't quite what I'm looking for. This process is hard!

I wanted to provide an update that I have been in touch with the jeweler for the original 4.5 ct ring who is very nice and said up front he does not want me to purchase unless I see it myself. We got to exchanging geographic information and he happens to have a friend who owns a shop 10 min from where I live, so I'll get to see it with my own eyes early next week. I'll keep you all posted! In the meantime, I'll continue to peruse the webs.

That’s great!

Hi everyone:

I'm back! And I need your thoughts. I saw the 3.52 O/P OEC in person (clarity is VS and it's eyeclean to me), and my immediate (like very first look) reaction was disappointment. But I spent almost an hour with the ring, and took TONS of videos and pictures, linked below (please try to ignore audio or mute the video as we were talking while I was taking videos). As time went on, the stone started growing more and more on me. Under a loupe, the faceting pattern of the larger stone is actually very close to my current one. The color grade is probably 1-2 grades lower than my current ring (AGS M, which could be GIA N or O).

I think the biggest issue with this ring is actually the setting. The bezel is nicely made, but there is a ring of metal under the bezel that I think is causing some light blockage on this stone. I think if I went forward with this trade, I would reset it to really show off the beauty of the stone.

I have the ability to look at it again tomorrow, which I'll probably do. For now, what do you all think?

I’m late to the conversation and haven’t read the whole thread, sorry. IMO The larger stone seems leaky, and the bezel is actually hiding some of the leakiness. Bezels typically make the facets of a diamond more defined and contrasty. Bezels also make for a steelier stone. The bezel may also be hiding girdle flaws, such as asymmetry, recutting or chips. The large stone also looks included (but maybe it’s due to the photography?) It’s also not very symmetric, which is common in antique stones, but that affects light return. The better the symmetry the better the light return, typically. A GIA report would determine the things that you need to know in order to determine a price. What I like about it is the very large facets and size. But I am concerned about what the diamond would look like out of the bezel. It’s something you need to see before you purchase, IMO unless you want to keep it bezeled.

Hi @LightBright, thanks for your thoughts! They were super helpful because there is something that I don't love love about this diamond and I think you hit it with the leakiness. The stone doesn't have to be super symmetric (my current one isn't either) but I agree a GIA report would be really helpful - the seller has no intention on sending it to GIA (I'm not exactly sure why, prob for the reasons you mentioned). And the stone is not included at least to the naked eye and what I could see from the loupe. I think for the money I would have to sink into this including trade-in, I need to find something that I'm 100% sure on and totally in love with.

The size is TDF but as far as the stone goes yours is still so much prettier! Also you said that one thing that was attractive to you was it was a complete ring yet now you are talking about a new setting too. I’m not sure it would be worth the hoopla of doing all that. Just my 2 cents :)

Thanks @Mreader - yeah I was disappointed about the setting. Again I'm not totally in love, but I found a couple other options in my search, waiting to hear what they say about a trade in as well. This is hard!

The large one doesn’t compare with the cut of your diamond. The large one is dark because of the cut, not because of the body color. It is not a good stone.

You are trying to fool yourself into liking it because it’s available and cheap. The guy is a loud, strong salesman, trying to talk down to you, because he wants your stone, which would be much easier for him (or his colleague?) to sell than the bad one.

Your diamond is beautiful, and it would be a shame to trade it in toward such a badly cut stone.

I think your first reaction so something also says so much. We can talk ourselves into things, but I think the initial things you dislike will truly bother you over time. I hope you wait and keep your stone for now. I suspect that the bezel is actually hiding problems instead of creating them

@Mreader and @Cerulean - I spent a LONG time looking at OECs before I committed to mine. Years, actually. I totally understand impatience, and it was certainly a factor for me in my previous diamond (not an OEC). I learned from that experience. I considered settling for something not as nice as what I wanted in an OEC, too, but having not done that feels really, really good.

You don’t need another opinion, but I’ll give it anyways, lol. I love your stone! The bigger one? Not so much.

OP- FYI,we can see your name in the Youtube video link.

Thank you all, really appreciate your help and compliments to my current stone.

@Tourmaline it's amazing you spent years looking for the right stone! Your patience is incredibly admirable and it's clear your waiting paid off. Are you familiar with this stone?

I also love this ring but it's several thousand over my budget: https://jackweirandsons.com/product...uropean-cut-diamond-solitaire-engagement-ring

The one in your video is very mushy, without a clear facet pattern. It’s not one I would consider.

And with a 56% table, the Jack Weir stone doesn’t qualify as an OEC. I see too much leakage under the table and not as clear a facet pattern as I would like to see.

I’ve shown this one before and you said it was not what you wanted, but it’s SO much nicer than the ones you’ve been looking at.

P.S. This is the side view of the diamond in your most recent video. A stone with this architecture will not perform well.

I am looking at this one again... what made you not purchase this stone? I was looking for facets a little chunkier than the elongated petals but the video on their ebay listing (which somehow I just noticed now) is very pretty.

I agree, I saw that and felt it was very flat

It was the same reason. I didn’t choose it because the facets weren’t quite as rounded as I wanted. But I was very tempted by it. I did handle it in person. It is a beautiful stone!! And the guy would probably take off $5000. I even put up a thread about this stone.

What about these ones? Technically labeled OMC so not sure if you will like the facet pattern.

I LOVE this ring except for the setting, but Grace said my trade in would need a GIA cert first and that the trade in value would be at wholesale so the amount I would get would be nowhere near what I paid which is not super appealing. They were also willing to knock off $400 for the setting.

Oh that’s a bummer.

Well, if you are 100% sure that you want to upgrade, perhaps you could consider consigning your stone with Grace to get closer to retail?

Your current stone is so pretty, I feel like it would sell quickly. Then, you’ll have the cash on hand and trade in policies won’t matter.

I really love your current OEC versus the others you shared. It has such a beautiful cut. Good luck on your search :)
