Thoughts on this OEC

OP, I think you should detach the trade-in from your search for a stone. If you could sell that diamond on Loupe Troupe you might have success as it’s a beautiful stone. I would not take wholesale price for a trade-in with your particular stone, and I would not compromise on your search. Have you approached OWD? (I don’t know their policies, but they have amazing stones.)

Another idea may be to contact IG seller Diana of SinCityFinds and tell her what you are looking for. She has a good eye and is picky about cut.

Thank you, I am leaning more towards this but was seeking a trade-in to make things easier. I agree that I think I could get a lot more than wholesale. What would also drive me nuts is if I did sell at wholesale price and the buyer jacks up the price. Looking at similar stones through JbG and OWD, they are asking for at least 20K for my stone. I am getting offers for 14-15K trade-in and I'm pretty sure demand for a diamond like mine is high.

I haven't approached OWD because I couldn't find much in their inventory, but they do have the best selection of older stones I've ever seen. @Mreader thank you for the suggestion to contact Diana, I follow her on Instagram and some of her finds are insane.

I consigned my previous solitaire with Grace. It took 4 months for it to sell, but I was very happy with how much I got for it.

Hey all, I am back... please don't burn me at the stake here as I ask about what you think of this stone. I think it's very pretty, but it carries an EGL SI3 clarity (so basically I1). I was told by vendor who carries a pretty good reputation here, that he is not worried about integrity of the stone. These were detailed comments:

"I'm studying very closely and I am finding them and then louping them... I can see the following:
- white feather near the girdle, which you can mostly cover with a prong
- white feather on another edge of the girdle, running along the girdle so it would not be prongable. But it is white and semi- blends in. You have to look for it to see it.
- another feather near the junction between the table and crown, also white. This is really the only primary inclusion to have any thoughts about because its in the table. The girdle ones blend nicely.
- some small black wisps on the crown (not on the girdle but not on the table either) but you really have to look to see them. If you look hard, you will find them but they are not obvious."

This video shows the inclusions best (I don't know what magnification):

From more of a normal distance viewing:

It's definitely something I need to see in person and inspection/return period is generous. I would not be able to go to the vendor location to see it. It's EGL certed and I think priced appropriately for the cert type and clarity grading, but otherwise I don't see a ton of red flags and think it's lovely.

Here are the technical specs:
Depth 61.7%
Table 52%
Crown 16.7%
Pavilion 42.6%
Girdle: Ext thin to thin
Polish Good
Symmetry Good

What is the size of these stone? And color? Videos aren’t loading for me right now but I’m on a very poor connection.

Personally, I would choose the stone on the right (from first post on this thread) at first blush over the other on the left (still from your video) without knowing any particulars.
Knowing those particulars might change that, and that this is coming from someone who has an EGL SI2 from ( I think) this same vendor.

just pointing out I choose larger and less inclusions over smaller and more diffuse inclusions, so that’s where I’m coming from.
others, of course, vary

I think you won’t know how this diffuse clarity inclusions interacts with you until you see it in person - so you can compare to how you see your current stone and it’s clarity as you have in person.

I had a similar experience with a vendor whose stone was graded SI3. He told me that the inclusions were white and they blended well. Irl, unfortunately, there were brown/grey inclusions visible to my naked eye.

I think I know the stone you are looking at, because I inquired out of curiosity previously. It is very much a compromise stone. The inclusions are fairly well hidden and it's much nicer than expected for the price, but in the long run, I think you will regret it.

I think if you happened to have one stone and wanted earrings of that size, and were looking, this would be fine for an earring, or even a pendant/single stone bangle if size is the goal. But, for a ring, I think it has too many cons.

Thanks for your input. I passed on first stone. In person it looked like there was a good deal of light leakage and it just didn't spark my heart that way I'd hoped. Your stone is beautiful!

I'm sorry to hear about this experience. I believe the vendor in that these inclusions are mostly white, but I worry it'll interfere with the brilliance and fire of the stone. Which is a shame because I do think this stone is nicely cut.

Ya know, I was just thinking the same thing! Like I think this stone could make a killer pendant. I do agree it's a compromise stone, and after repeatedly looking at my ring, I'm not sure if I can make the compromise.

I reached out to Grace about consigning instead of trading in, I'll see what the says. From what I'm seeing, a stone like mine is going for $20K+.

THIS IS GORGEOUS and is a lot of what I am looking for. But I agree, seems a tad too warm for my eyes.

I th ought you had asked for additional pics of this one. Am I wrong about that?

The resolution on the videos is too poor for me to see anything other than the fact that it’s a diamond-colored stone.

I did and they didn’t get back to me. I messaged them again today.

They got back to me and indeed said the stone color in the images is consistent with its true color.

At this point I am leaning towards consigning with Grace with hopes of a quickish sale, especially with any planned holiday proposals, and using that towards one of her pieces.

I don't think I would be happy with the most recent stone. It has too much that would bother me. It's a shame because the cut doesn't look bad.

That is a good idea. Over the last few months, I have used her services to cull down numerous things. At present, she has one ring that didn't sell on the new arrivals page but thinks should sell by the end of the year and I have another 4 pieces I sent recently, three that were just listed last night. She has a very focused audience for antique stones and pieces and does very well.

She is also going ot NY this month and I'm guessing she will come back wtih some new stuff. The Miami show is also in February usually. She will get new diamonds then too. I'd tell her what you are looking for, beacuse I'm sure she can find something in your budget, especially if your ring has sold. So, if she doesn't have the stone you want know, I think she can find it. The second NY show will be in July of this coming year as well. All the vendors seem to pick up a lot of inventory by interdealer sales at the shows.

On the plus side, you at least know what you want. I still have zero clue about what I want to do and if I even want t a diamond now, or if I just want to put the money from the sales in a mutual fund and forget about it.

I was hoping they would at least send more photos though!
