and Jstar - yes cheers, the RG and green gem do come up nicer together IRL. I haven't really decided yet, but I was considering just letting Julia have carte blanche on those two together - maybe some engraving? We'll see..

I also have ideas for a sort-of eternity band using a bunch of smaller gems (all from Barry) - kinda like this as a ground concept:
So the blue-green could end up in that instead

Those are all very pretty, the treatment of topaz education is interesting too.

Honestly, I like the aqua the best. But as I said before, I am obsessed with the color blue, and I love the oval shape. I wouldn''t worry about the tilt window so much, my aqua has true window, and I would love one with even color throughout.

Your tourmaline is beautiful, it seems more green, but that is probably because I have been staring at mine for the last two weeks and my perception is off. I honestly think that setting makes it look more of a darker green than a blue-green, but that could be a combo of my monitor and lack of mother nature cooperating for your pics.

You made some very good purchases overall!

Hey ltl,

Yes I agree, it''s good to learn as well as ogle.
2.gif

Hrmm..now I''m not sure what to do about the aqua. tbh, because I have not seen many (any?) well cut quality gems IRL except for the ones I buy, I don''t really have anything to compare it to...But most of you seem to like it. My yellow beryl (also from BB) doesn''t have any window at all.

No you''re right, the tourm is def. predominantly green - I am looking into getting a more blue-ish one.
Ya, the pics don''t do much justice - for some reason the green and RG do work well together (at least imho).

Cheers for the comments!

And lastly, just came today - blue topaz, 10mm square emerald cut, ~6cts, cut by Lisa Elser:
Well they are all lovely AJ, but I have to admit, the sqaure emerald just knocks my socks off!

Thanks Gailey! Lisa has an exact matching one if you like it that much..

31.gif
ah but so do I! Mine''s a tad smaller at 9.13mm²

Oh really?! Also from Lisa?
Ya, I was mean and split up her matched pair..
9.gif
I am very happy with it, considering it was really a "learning" stone..

Do you have pics anywhere?

I don''t have access to the depth atm, I can post it later (I think). It def. does not appear near as deep as asschers of this size.

The level of radioactivity of the electron bombardment is very low and so it’s a safe stone. I also believe that most darker blue topazes are safe as long as they have been held in a “cooling” period of the required amount of time. I guess my issue is that electron bombardment is still a drastic method of treatment and as such, not a stone I personally would purchase. However, it is a very inexpensive stone with a pleasant pastel colour that is attractive and as such, has a good market following.

Hey Chrono -
I''m 100% with you on the natural stone thing. Infact, I don''t even tend to like the idea of my stones being "gently heated" even when it''s the standard. Don''t know why, it''s just a preference I have..

As you mentioned, I can understand topaz''s commercial appeal.
For me personally, it was a good chance to see how I feel about a large sized step cut gem in person, before committing alot more $ to something similar in a different material.
So as such, it''s served it''s purpose, and as a plus it''s something I like the look of and will be fun to keep (as long as it''s safe ;-)
5.gif

AJ,
Since the stone has served its purpose, what’s your decision on a large sized step cut?
27.gif

For me it''s both a colour preference, and a (mild) safety one.

You wear 4-5 carats of rock. I have a kilo in storage and aspirate small amounts of rock dust. Different levels of exposure!

Hey C...
I''d love one...after I find a sapphire first

Hey Lisa,
oh I hope you''re joking about the dust! But I suspect you are not...
40.gif

Well, you know how I feel about the topaz, so cheers for cutting it!

HI AJ

If you want to return the aqua you may consider selling it to me, we both live in the same country, easier shipping.

I have a few larger purchases in my sights, so I decided to send it back even though everyone seemed
to love it.

he he...aqua face-off between ltl and LG..?
31.gif

I have some more large jewellery expense in the works too, maybe the aqua wasn''t meant to be... LFC are you sure you don''t want it?
27.gif
Anyway to be fair I think Barry will put it on his website again so anyone can nab that aqua.

My father would be heartbroken if he found out I got an aqua that was almost the same shape he got me. If I get another aqua, it would have to be a cushion or round. But that is a good price for that color, I am sure someone will get it.

I might not even have an address for it to be sent to, I don''t have a place yet in my new home and will probably be living in a hotel for awhile.

aahh...wish I was in the market for an aqua....

I really like that blue topaz! Beautiful stones as always Arjunajane

Actually, whilst this thread is still going - the sun came out today and I took the tourmaline on a day trip to work with me - the colour is *very pretty* in indirect sun. I had it in the car, then in the office, and checked it out at lunch.
It''s a wonderful bright forest green, much prettier and reasonably lighter than my pics in this thread. Very much what I imagine a tsavorite to be like in person - I thought this may be interesting for anyone who''d like a tsav but can''t afford one..

I''ll definitely try to get nicer photos soon.

aww, that''s so sweet ltl, firstly that your dad buys you gems and secondly that you don''t want to hurt his feelings!
Boy, if my dad knew *anything* about my gem habit...ummm, let''s just say he wouldn''t understand

"Oh, I hope you don't have to stay in the hotel too long ltl!"

Me too. I am more worried about my cats. Someone in the area is trying to get me a room that takes pets. The move is going to be stressful enough on them, I don't want to have to kettle them for days on top of that. This plus my board certification exam is causing me to loose sleep :-(.

The only good thing is that it makes it logistically difficult for me to buy gems, although Berry is in my BF parent's hometown, so there would be a work around if I really wanted one

AJ I have to set my garnets, I''m getting a graduated 5 stone ring made. I also have to pay for my Malaya garnet ring from an Etsy seller, it''s been in the works for a few months now, I hope to get it soon! Plus I discovered an vintage jewellery seller last night bought myself a French rose gold chain...

aw hon, I can imagine! I can''t stand moving - infact, I doubt we will for at least many years.
Don''t stress too much, I''m sure your certification will go smoothly - I can relate though, when 3 or 4 "large" issues in life build up, I''m guilty of getting pretty stressed - not some of my best moments
40.gif

ha ha - there is always a work-around when it comes to gems, you know this!
I would love to visit Barry IRL - he is always so funny via email.

Hi AJ
I just bought a aquamarine from Gary (finewater) which I just saw went through customs today so hopefully I''ll have it soon
36.gif
36.gif
I''m not sure what I will do it with it I had been thinking of trying JKT, but I might put wait and see because I also just ordered a blue green tourmaline from barry which I''m super excited about which is on it''s way too-- I keep tracking it looking for updates!! (I''m sure you can relate)...so I''m looking forward to seeing those, and assuming I love the tourmaline as much as I think I will that will be the next project I put my pennies toward-- I''m quite excited

it sounds like you have some lovely new gemmies heading your way, congrats!
Do you have a photo to share of your BB? I''m loving the blue-greens he''s doing lately.

I am also considering a purchase from Gary atm - I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on the real life vs photos when you receive your aqua, and of course your over-all impressions.

Please post when you can!
