LRP-- I love your story! You totally DO have to use your brain and your eyes, even at high end retailers (one of the HW Cushion Micropave rings I tried on in Vegas was only tilted from the profile view), it's so true. You can't just go in like sheep bleating "It's Tiffany so it must be perfect," or you might not end up with the best you can get--like that crooked head on THAT RING. I'm happy to hear that you got exactly what you and your FI wanted. Good service is key. I've had mixed experiences with Tiffany. But have personally always had the best service at Cartier, unfortunately I'm not a huge fan of their designs (well, except that amazing ruby ring I saw for 300K) except for their watches and their purses (OMG their purses are TDF).

Freke... it's STILL bugging me. I swear it's staring at me... crookedly.

Freke: Thank you!!!!!!! I am putting that pic on my hard drive :-). I was trying to figure out what was wrong with that bead set ring. The crooked head is probably the result of a bad photoshop job, because a lot of the the stones on that site look photoshopped. How hard would it have been to take a pic of a few other rings?

Gypsy: Sorry to hear about the lay off, sounds like things are getting better if you have another project in mind. The economy is another reason I am not pushing BF right now. My job is pretty safe, his is not as safe, but so far he has survived multiple lay offs.

Deelight: I did see that one (I think Leon rips on Tiffany''s on one of those settings). I like it, but I like the basket head better.

LabRat: I do love the classic Tiffany solitaire, and I know you will love your ring. I did educate my BF about the HCA and ideal-scope over the weekend, I think they are great tools for anywhere you shop, but really important for a place like Tiffanys where the quality of the cut can vary.

You''re welcome!!! I have always wondered how they take their photos and what kind of digital effects go into it, because I''m never actually seen photography that looks like that. But yeah, you''d think they could have taken pics of a few other rings, or just picked out one that''s prongs were straight.
3.gif

Lt... yeah, things are a little better (for now, they''re talking layoffs at my work again). I hope your FFI survives this, and the next, rounds with his job intact.

I agree with you about Cartier''s designs - they just don''t do it for me. We''ve only been to Cartier twice and the service was excellent but I didn''t see anything I really loved. The first time we went was to look at watches for me. I liked the Tank Francaise but SO hated it and we ended up going for a Rolex instead. The second time was to look at e-rings. The only one I thought suited me was the 1895 Solitaire, but I prefer the look of 6 prongs to 4 prongs so Cartier lost out there too.

Lately, I have been frustrated with the quality of luxury goods in general. For example, I love Chanel handbags and I was shocked when I heard that people were purchasing $3K+ bags and the hardware was breaking or the stitches on the quilting were coming loose after 1 month of use. That is totally unacceptable and to add salt to the wound, Chanel has been consistently raising their prices every year!
29.gif
It has made me think it is really necessary to inspect everything I buy and has reinforced my belief that the luxury name does not equal perfection. I guess I went into e-ring shopping with that same mentality! I really wanted to learn about diamonds and use that to do my own research on the available stones at Tiffany. I''m glad I did since, on paper, some of the diamonds brought in were kind of duds!
40.gif

Gypsy, I am sending dust to you. I hope it is just talk.

I have been to Cartier too. The only 2 rings I loved were 50K and up! The service was great though. They can be kind of pushy when me and BF go in together, trying to sell us an e-ring of course. But I am not too interest in their selection.

LabRat: I totally know where you are coming from. I would not pay that much for a hand bag, and would demand my money back if a high end item started falling apart shortly after I bought it. To me the appeal of a luxury item is that they are often timeless in style (but not always), and well made. So you have something that will be in style in 10 years and will last that long. My BF just introduced me to the Burberry trench...now that is well made and timeless.
30.gif
I will just have to admire it at the store right now.

LT I much prefer the basket as well, thats what won it for me in the end ;)

Thank you very much LT. I''m not too likely to be hit, but there''s no rhyme or reason to these things. I''m hoping for a furlough instead, personally. ((HUGS)). And I can''t wait to see your e-ring!

Yeah, if I''m ''overpaying'' for something based on their reputation for quality I''d be TICKED if I had something like that happen.

Ltl - I LOVE Burberry trench coats! They look so classy and elegant! I really want one too but their classic trench is too long on me
39.gif
They have a cropped version that would work on my 5''3'''' shortness but I don''t have the cash to spend on one right now. I have been dying for that one since the weather here in Austin has started to get warm enough for a light jacket. Sometimes SO will treat me since he knows my grad stipend stinks but ever since he made the huge e-ring purchase, he is trying to cut back on the frivolous spending. I''ll have to join you in admiring it at the store for now!
28.gif

Oh, I have a Burberry Trench. Love it, AND if anything ever happens, you just drop it off at the store and they fix it. Even if it''s just regular wear and tear.

Oh and *****dust***** to everyone and their SOs for their jobs! I am safe (grad student = cheap labor and the govt stimulus package included an NIH "bailout") and we think SO is safe. There were layoffs and office closures at his law firm late last year so it is not expected that there will be anymore but with the way things are, who knows?

Wow, new collection by Tiffany''s... It`s very pretty, but I still love the Novo and the classic solitaire setting best!! hehe... It`s interesting they`re coming up with a new collection already... I thought they usually introduce a new engagement ring every couple of decades...

LtlFirecracker, good to see you back and starting to feel better about the LDR. Plus, having a chat with your SO about Tiffany vs. Leon must have been nice too!
1.gif
I agree with you, the solitaire setting looks best by Tiffany but the bead set one looks much nicer by Leon. And that is not considering crooked Tiffany rings... lol. It seems to me like the bead set shank by Tiffany''s is just too wide and swallows the centre diamond. Its nice that you`re leaving the final decision to your SO and you`ll have a nice surprise.

I''m with you on this, DG...I am not too interested in this line. I tend to go for the more classic looks. I''m still holding out for my Tiffany setting solitaire and shared-prong band!

I''m definitely going to keep hanging out here even after I get engaged. I love this thread!

I`ve been married for years but love hanging out with you LIW girls!!

Are you getting married soon DG? I''m not up on the BWW/LIW lists anymore, unfortunately. Which swing band are you getting? Pic (I''m too lazy to look!)?
Not very soon. As of right now, we are trying to get our professional careers on track. I''m pretty good with my job but face a potential layoff if things don''t start picking up. I don''t feel quite ready yet for marriage but buy the time it happens, I will be. FF has been looking and looking for a job in his ''career'' but hasn''t gotten one yet. It''s quite important to him that he find that job and feel settled with some extra money for security before getting engaged. So....I keep telling the ladies I believe I''ll be engaged somewhere within 3 years. So it could be less than 3 years. (but time flies so that is right around the corner to me!) It''s hard to say right now as a lot depends on how things go for us coming up here within the next year or two.

Our dear friend blondebunny just recently got engaged with this Tiffany Bead Set ring.

We are all in good Tiffany company. I just simply love it!!!
31.gif

Blondebunny''s bead-set Tiffany solitaire is a beauty! It is a little annoying to me how thick the band is on larger stones though. I was told the same thing about the proportion (Tiffany wants to maintain the same proportion to the center stone based on the size of the center). I guess the Novo is a good option for those who like the thin pave-style band.

Ugh, my ring has made it to our house (SO and I live together)! It is so hard knowing that bad boy is somewhere in the premises and I don''t know where!
32.gif

I remember Blond Bunny's ring. I have always loved the bead set style, but her e-ring made me take a second look. Now it is one of the looks I love most.

Lab rat: I agree with you on the proportions. I like a thinner band if there are diamonds in it. I would be going crazy if I knew my future e-ring was in the house!

Ditto to that! I prefer a thin dainty band myself...it''s a MUST.

That sounds like a good plan! (My memory is terrible) but you guys haven't been together very long (a couple of years, a year??) right? I think (again bad memory) that you are fairly young and it sounds like your FI is too, if he's establishing just establishing his career. I think that sounds responsible. What do you do? Are you out of school yet-- now-- for a while (yikes, I swear I have swiss cheese for recall).

Thank you. I agree about the band. I like a thinner e-ring band, I mean, it will have a friend in the future that it will need to share finger space with ;-).

BTW, I put my cats up in the furry baby thread, as kittens and now. You should take a look. You will see how similar our cats looked as babies.

Actually we are both 27 and have been together 10.5 years. (First year was LDR as we were both still in High School. He moved to Colorado from Minnesota after graduating to be near me) I'm a graphic designer and FINALLY got 'THE' job back in September after having little crappy graphic design jobs here and there for the past few years. I make a good amount of money and am currently saving MOST of it. But of course with the current economy, things could take a turn for me. Hopefully not! They just offered a voluntary layoff at my work and accepted 25 people for that. Come this May and September they may have to do involuntary. But hopefully I'll be safe!!! And he actually finished with school last May with a degree in Public Administration. (It took him a while to get his degree as he had a full time job and his own condo to pay for...) So he's trying to find a job with the Government. After that (if it ever happens!) he may possibly go to get his Masters because he wants to have a higher position and at this point we don't know if he will need a Masters for that or not.

You and I haven't really ever posted much to each other (probably because I spend most of my time on the LIW board) but I have always enjoyed reading your posts! I think you are quite a lovely person
4.gif

THAT''S Right! I remember your posts about your job!! Everyone is having layoffs, I do sincerely hope you get passed up.

Sorry I got so many details wrong. I almost never come onto LIW. John and I were together for 9 years before we got married (engaged pretty early on) but we were older when we met. You guys have been together since your late teens! My best friend has been with her FI for... 12 or 13 years... they got together while she was in her senior year, and have been waiting till they are independent to get married (she''s just finishing up grad school). Everyone''s got their own time line.

Thank you for the compliment honey, I''m not really lovely (kinda snarky, grumpy, occasionally bitchy... you know all the FEMALE dwarves they don''t mention in the fairy tales. And definitely forgetful) but it''s kind of you to say so.

It''s totally ok. That''s why I gave you the scoop on me and my relationship in a quick posting. I am SOOO happy to see someone who KNOWS my situation and understands it. There are too many people (not talking about PS''ers here) who can''t understand why we''ve been together this long and aren''t married. But as you said, everyone''s got their own timeline and every story is different. When the time is right for us, then it will happen! Which as I said, I don''t think it''s many more years from now anyway.
