Today's our 10th Manniversary

:wavey: :wavey: OOOO, ooo, ooo, I have an idea! :wavey: :wavey: (shades of welcome back, kotter  )

For a marriage/SO relationship between 2 women, what if they call it a ma'amiversary? :appl:

iLander, a quick story, my lesbian neighbors went to Canada, and when they got back, I asked one of them if they got married (I'd like to get married), and she said, "No, I don't believe in marriage." :o

SO was so mad! He said, "Why do you do things like that?!"

How was the cake? I'm totally craving cake now. I love really good cake!

It was pretty good.
Trader Joe's mix.
Slightly on the dry side two days later but I'll rough it.

Come to Scotland? We have castles, scenery, all the romanticism you could ever wish for, and civil partnerships for same sex couples. Moves are afoot now to remove civil partnerships (which gives all the legal status of marriage anyway) and simply amend the Marriages (Scotland) Act to take out the opposite sex requirement.

C'mon! I'll even bake you a cake... (Love, love, love a good wedding  )

i don't get it, why would that make your SO mad? You were just curious. . . I would have asked the same thing. :?

I didn't know that gay couples could marry in Canada. Is the marriage recognized in the US? Why don't more gay couples go to Canada and marry?

Excuse my ignorance, or if I've offended in any way . . . :halo:

Happy belated Manniversary Kenny! All the best to you both and wishing you many more years of happiness together. :appl:

Cachette :))

You offend? I'll believe that when I see it. No, don't worry. Marriage is legal is some (not many) US states, it's not in mine. Some people in the US marry in Canada as a political statement. If your home state doesn't have same sex marriage, it doesn't really do you any good. My SO, I guess he thought my question embarrassed my neighbor, but I don't even know if that's true, I doubt it. She didn't seem to have any problem giving me her viewpoint (and we'd known each other for five years at this point). :))

Only if I can stay! I have to admit, I read your posts and I am so jealous about where you live (and I live in Hawaii, so that ought to tell you something about how much I think the US should have universal health care, etc.).

Thanks! :)) I don't know if they'd let us emigrate but you're very fortunate you don't live in a country that sees some the tragedies with health care we see here. It's brutal and there's no excuse for it. It is really unconscionable.

I am late to this thread and haven't read the responses, but I want to add my (belated) congratulations Kenny!! :appl: :appl: :appl:

My DH's uncle and his partner are getting married in CT next weekend - on their 10th anniversary also. We're very excited for them

We're very much on the same page, I think.
You need to be domiciled in Scotland to marry here, but there are ways of achieving that. ;))
A marriage validly constituted in the country where it was officiated is valid in Scotland, whether you'd be allowed to enter into that marriage here or not - I'd assumed that was the same everywhere. Are same sex couples who marry here not seen as being married if they go to a US state that doesn't marry same sex couples?

I'm really late to this thread too-happy Anniversary Kenny! I hope that you enjoyed it and here's to the next 10 years!

Happy Anniversary, Kenny!

I wish I knew what they were.

US states will recognize marriages made in other countries but our federal government has (an infamous law) a law that says the federal government may recognize no marriages made in any of our states.

Imdanny, you can apply for leave to remain in the UK for a period of 6 months. Being subject to that immigration control will then let you apply for special permission to register a civil partnership (and hold the ceremony). You'll get a letter from the Home Secretary authorising the legal formalities. You can register the partnership (hopefully eventually this will be marriage though, not CP) at any time during your stay and you can leave before the 6 months are up...

I remember this because the local authority I worked for when CPs were first introduced invited a lot of same sex celebrity couples to visit Scotland for their wedding.

Sorry Kenny, for this threadjack - we should start another thread. I hope you had a fantastic milestone anniversary and wish you both all the best for the next ten years!

Danny, earlier in this thread you mentioned asking your lesbian neighbor if she had gotten married in Canada. Canada is, obviously, another country (just as much as is Scotland). If the United States recognizes all foreign marriages, then it must recognize marriages performed in Canada, no?

Deb, seeking clarification
:read:

PS-I live in Connecticut. I wish some of you who live in more primitive climes would just immigrate!!! Didn't people come to the United States seeking freedom from oppressive laws? Well...maybe they will have to come to New England for that now!!!
