I don't mean to freak everyone out but it's one of those things that you think it won't happen to you and then it does and it's really horrible.

He was severely ill with vomitting & gastrointestinal distress. Then, he had a sever reaction know as Reiter's (sp) syndrome where he was paralyzed from the waist down and extremely sick. They thought he had a brain tumor at first...20 doctors came to see him and finally someone figured it out. In some people, the body has an extemely adverse autoimmune reaction to salmonella--a.k.a. Reiter's Syndrome. He needed months of physical therapy afterwards and to this day, he get numbness in his legs from time to time. He ate undercooked chicken in a restaurant. It was coated in buffalo sauce so he thought the pink hue was from that.

I also had a roomate in college who got salmonella. She was so sick-it went on for 4 days... she SHOULD have gone to the hospital but didn't want to. Again, chicken in a restaurant. She became a vegetarian after that.

I'll tell you guys one thing--I don't eat anything that has even the most remote chance of being contaminated by salmonella and I do not order chicken in restaurants.

The sad fact is, you can also get food poisoning from people who don't wash their hands or don't observe sanitary kitchen practices and then touch food, but if you think about that, you'll never leave the house.

Holy schnikies. That sucks, you aren''t kidding adverse reactions.

I don''t usually get chicken in restaurants, if I do its genreally not coated in anything that would cover it being undercooked.

I''m late joining in....but here are my favorite ice-creams:

Supermarket: Haagan Daz Coffee Ice cream

Baskin Robbins: Jamocha Almond Fudge

Ben & Jerry''s: Chocolate Fudge Brownie.... (It''s got real huge brownie chunks!) or Strawberry cheesecake (with real cheesecake chunks!)

Haagen Daz Dulce de Leche. To die for!!!

I agree with Mara...ice cream is not part of my weight loss plan so if I eat it its got to be good!!!

Definitely anything with mint!

Although I LOVE Breyers, almost all of em...Mint Chocolate Chip, Reg Choco Chip, Butter Pecan, Strawberry and Vanilla Bean

My BR favorite was Dacquiri Ice, thats ALL i ate as a kid, but I dont think they have it anymore

Cold Stone had this peppermint ice cream at Christmas time that was pink and had candy cane pieces in it. I thought I died and went to heaven when I first had it! I was very chubby last Christmas... :)

There''s an ice cream parlor in Chicago I think near Fullerton and Clybourne (? near Webster Place) that has THEE best peppermint stick ice cream ever, cant recall the name though.

And then there''s Kopps in Milwaukee...frozen custard and their specials of the day...

I grew up with B And R, love Rocky Road, Jamoca Almond Fudge, Pralines and Cream and Mint Chip. I love that their chips are more like shavings. Their ice cream cakes are great...I get them with NO cake at all, all ice cream.

I am SHOCKED there would be raw egg in an ice cream. I was eating it at Coldstone''s all the time...and had horrible stomach issues. Maybe that is why. I was there tonight and they claimed they are re doing it. SHAME ON COLDSTONE. Everyone knows raw egg is bad!! They also have some GROSS flavors right now. Just plain nasty and inedible. I like heath, caramel, brownie, coconut, bananas, whipped cream, fudge, marshmallow...

I like Ben and Jerry''s, my son loves Phish food, it has little chocolate covered caramel fish in it.

Haagen Daz coffee is the best I have ever tasted. I normally like crunch too though, so I love nuts on it. Roasted almonds are great, makes it a bit like JAF from B and R.

I love fruit sorbets when they are fresh, and they are so great in the summer time. I have tried frozen custard, it is okay but a bit too airy for me. I would rather have less real ice cream.

I do like TCBY sometimes, but some of that stuff tastes like chemicals to me....

I went to Cold Stone today too, THANKS TO THIS EVIL THREAD! I swear, taco bell last nite, Cold Stone today, what are you guys doing to me? Let's start some healthy threads like 'what kind of fruit is your favorite!' or 'what are your favorite low fat foods!'....hehee...

I was totally grossed out by some of the flavors they had today...one was bright blue and called something like Tutti Fruity or Fruity Pebbles or something nasty. I guess it appeals to kids?

I am old school on ice cream, it took me months to even try Sweet Cream, I thought okay Coffee is something I know I will like. But then I started experimenting and now I have to have MY concoction and nothing else!
31.gif
Once we were in Palm Springs in line and I said what I wanted to the gal behind the counter and a bunch of other people were like 'that sounds good' and tried it. I was like..make sure to name it after me! Something like Mara's Coffee Fatty Goodness!

girls, take it easy on those ice creams.watch for the extra thick girdle.

Mara, here''s some fruit for you:

In a blender, mix:

Peach Schnapps
Fresh sliced Peaches, skins removed (you could use canned too)
Ice
Dry Sparkling white wine
Pinch or two of sugar

I never measure--just take a whiff and if it smells good, mix it!

Homemade icecream always used to be made with raw eggs. Look up old recipes and they almost all called for uncooked ingredients. My dad wouldn''t let us so we always cooked ours or made it without eggs. I think commercial icecream used to be made that way also years ago. Salmonella has only become a large problem in the recent past due to how chickens are raised in such close quarters.

Anyway, my favorite is anything with chocolate or bananas, or both.

Ooo, that's easy! Edy's Slow Churned French Silk
18.gif
Mmmmmmmmmmm

Oh, and Haagen Dazs Chocolate Cherry Truffle
18.gif
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

ETA: All low fat

Not the greatest for weight watching...but at least I don't feel totally guilty, lol.

I am such a ice cream junkie, it''s not eeeven funny! I worked for Baskin Robbins for 3 years in high school and even interviewed for Dreyers corp. here in the Bay Area (Oakland).

I swear all those hours of scooping made my right arm the tonest it has ever been. I dunno how those Cold Stone kids do it. Their wrists must be killing them!

Anywhoo - Since I don''t have one sole favorite (it''s too hard to pick just one) I thought I''d brake it down by my most consumed brands:

Baskin Robbins: Pistachio Almond
Cold Stone: Coffee w/ Heath Bar & Brownie
Ben & Jerry''s: Chunky Monkey® Ice Cream
Häagen-Dazs Light: Chocolate & Almond Covered w/coffee ice cream
Thrifty''s/Sav On''s: Chocolate Malted Crunch - the cheapest scoop by far!

and at the local Indian Restaurant I go to they have this flavor, ''Saffron ice cream, with rosewater and pistachios,'' it''s unbelieveable and delicious!

Don''t even get me started on gelato. I do have a question though for the East Coasters, I am dying to try Ciao Bella Gelato ever since I saw that Apprentice episode. How''s it like? I am tempted to go to NY just to try that Gelato as we ll as going to Serendipity. Yes, I know, Horrible!

Oh and one more thing: check your local BR franchises. I know some of them offer "Dollar Tuesdays" at Baskin-Robbins. Only one dollar for a scoop during 5-10pm. Get your fix(es) for the week!

Df, there you go again with those girdles!!!!! At least they''re not the bruted ones, haha.

Those Dollar Tuesdays are the worst! I steer clear around then.

Jen that recipe sounds awesome for a hot summer night. You are the liquor concoction queen..do you have a mental bartender in your head?!

Ooh, your saffron ice cream reminded me of one my uncle makes which is ginger ice cream YUM.

I think Ciao Bella is pretty much available everywhere, at least it is in Chicago so I never assumed it was just an East coast thing. Check on their website for places that sell it near you. But, come on now, why waste your money going to NYC if you really want gelato, just go to Italy! Mmmmmm... Vivolis in Firenze (my favorite was the rice flavor there)...or Giolittis in Rome...or San Crispinos...so many more decent one stoo....I''m starting to drool thinking about them
30.gif
It truly is amazing that I lost a ton of weight living in Italy instead of gaining on it. It would be so easy to pack on the pounds there.

You can order the Ciao Bella on-line and have it sent overnight to you! My Dad is a HUGE Donald Trump fan and I sent him both of the flavors they made on the show and he thought that was the best gift ever
16.gif

Also, you can order the Serendipity Frozen Hot Chocolate mix and make it at home. I know it''s more fun to experience it in NYC, but just in case, check out their website www.serendipity3.com

I am sooooooooo in the minority, but I''ve never been a fan of the frozen hot chocolate. Also could''ve been that I just didn''t find it worth waiting 2 hours for a table every time I get dragged there too. Oh well.

and those old fashion soft serve FROSTIES.the ones that are made with REAL cream.

I seem to have a new favorite all the time. I love those places like Coldstone that mix a custom flavor for you
3.gif
. But my latest favorites are Ben & Jerry''s ''Oatmeal Cookie Chunk'' and ''The Gobfather''
18.gif
. As long as I continue going for long bike rides I can eat stuff like this.

I just had Ben and Jerry''s Karmel Sutra, and it was positively orgasmic!!!! My husband limped in on his crutches to see what was going on in the kitchen!

I don''t know how I missed this thread!! MINT CHOCOLATE CHIP BABY!!!!

Yum yum yum!!!

or, starbucks coffee flavored ice cream is my second pick!

Blue Bell Ice Cream -

First choice would be Coffee ice cream with a heavy dose of Hershey''s Dark Chocolate Syrup, then a big ol'' handful of walnuts or pecans, Pure heaven. Blue Bell Homamade Vanilla will be okay if I can''t get the coffee flavored.
One of my favorite ice cream concoctions is this pie:

Graham Cracker crust (from the gorcery store!)
Smooth a few tablespoons of chocolate syrup onto the crust, freeze til firm.
A layer of chocolate ice cream, freeze
Chocolate syrup, freeze til firm
A layer of Vanilla Ice Cream, freeze til firm.
Chocolate syrup, freeze til firm
A layer of Coffee Ice Cream, freeze til firm.
Chocolate syrup, add some nuts if you like, freeze
Then devour it!!!!
