I think you should get whatever type of ring *you* want for your engagement ring.
I have a traditional engagement ring, but my wedding band is a full eternity band with 7 point rbs in a shared-prong setting and I could not be happier with it. It is really, really beautiful.
I'm pretty hard on my rings, too, and I haven't had a problem with the full eternity yet. (My engagement ring is also set on a full eternity band.) If you use a local jeweler then you can always go in to have the ring serviced if anything happens. Our jeweler checks my stones regularly, and if anything did happen to any of the little rbs in my bands they would replace them for free.
But, I do understand that if money is an issue people prefer a half eternity so the ring will appear blingier for less. There's something so decadent about the full eternity, though, I really, really love it.
