SO, I just found out after an extensive search for a AGS Princess and I''ve found one that fits my budget. My girl has seen a trillion cut online but not in person and is convinced that is what she wants.

I know that trillions are usually used as accent stones but not a solitaire, does anyone have a trillion diamond? Any opinions about the grade of cut they should be? Any and all information is very valueable.

I''ve seen the pictures online and I don''t personally like them at all. But it is HER ring........

Right, it IS her ring! Unfortunately since it''s a fancy cut it really needs to be seen in order to know whether it''s nice or not. I would deal only with a vendor who is willing/able to take ASET pictures for you like Whiteflash or Good Old Gold.

Ditto! Jonathan at GOG seems to be good at sourcing nice looking hard-to-finds. Incidentally, you might want to ask him about setting this baby. Since it''s going to be a center stone, it won''t be safely ensconced in the gallery or shoulders of the shank. What''s the cracking danger of prong setting compared to other pointed corner stones, like princess or marquise?

Both sites don''t have anything in a trillion diamond......any other sites I can look at?

You really need to put in some phone time to find a trillion unfortunately. It's not a type of stone that will appear on websites for the most part.

You could also call Mark at Engagement Rings Direct. He's great with fancy cuts and has access to tons of them since he is in the diamond district.

That is one of my huge concerns, she wants one that sits rather low so it won''t get caught on things, but just the sharp corners of the diamond to begin with will get caught. The strength of the prongs is also a very real concern, she works retail and is constantly moving boxes, pushing freight carts, and things. It would be less of a concern if she worked in an office, but her job tends to be hands on.

Thanks for bringing that out, I hadn''t thought about the prong strength!!

moving boxes, and pushing freight? how heavy?

Has she thought about the setting style she wants for this stone? Something along these lines does a nice job of protecting the corners. You can also completely bezel the stone, which will protect it well. All depends on the look she is going for.

moving boxes, and pushing freight? I don''t think she should wear a diamond ring when she''s working.

Agreed. And a princess would probably be even more vulnerable than a trillion if that is what you are worried about.

The setting that she likes is similar to this

I thought that a trellis head would be better as it would hold the diamond lower.

She works as a store manager for Target, and is very petite so nothing super heavy. She doesn''t like anything like the setting pictured above :)

It won''t really hold the diamond lower...but usually it will have protected corners at least. But if she''s moving boxes and heavy stuff at work, she probably shouldn''t wear a ring regardless...I''d just get a plain band to wear at work if I were her.

I too came to PS looking for Trillions

I am pretty sure GOG can get them for you, just shoot them an email to start a dialog. I also heard that Hearts and Arrows Trillions are coming to market soon, maybe even this month, but I can't remember who I was talking to about that. (sorry) I was also a 'princess' girl, but I think Trillions are fabulous, and way more interesting. (I am the gf, btw) I've been told that depth 50+ and table 50+ was desirable, but I have also been told that there are no hard and fast rules with Trillions, so I will wish you good luck! PLEASE let us know what you find and what you end up with. I have a thread on here somewhere with interesting trillion settings, and I can't wait to get one some day

What sort of setting are you interested in?? I don''t want this thing breaking because of the sharp points. I will see what happens on Wednesday. I''m not going to buy anything that day, and probably not from that store, the only certs they have are from some place that I can only find one or two hits on Google about. VERY SKEPTICAL now that I''ve been on here

what store are you talking about, that you Googled?

If you have her ring insured, you don''t have to worry too much about replacing it in case of chipping.

Very smart. And as we keep repeating, don''t worry too much about it breaking. I would think a princess would be much more likely to chip than a trillion, trillion''s corners aren''t as sharp as a princess. So if you were ok with a princess, you''ll be more than ok with a trillion.

Another thing to ask your GF and to discuss with vendors is whether the trillion is straight edged, or more rounded. Most people prefer rounded edges, but I
30.gif
straight edges. I have discovered, with rings, that I LOVE sharp lines and angles, and I am really into step-cuts with their geometric concentric lines!
31.gif
So be sure to be specific! :) If you are looking at pics, then it should be apparent, but you should let them know in advance if they are sourcing stones so that no one''s time is wasted.

Yeah, She''s diggin the straight edges, wants them pointed like madonna''s bra. I think they look a bit better than the rounded ones, but she also wants a setting that sits very low, which the local maul store manager told us cannot be done with a trillian. I''ve found an awesome princess, which is what she initially told me she wanted. Both the stone and setting from WF for 2700. Right on budget and very nice stone.

I guess that will be another example of a local maul jeweler not being fully aware of what he''s selling

Yup!

Neat,

Do you have any contacts or info about trillian stones. I am skeptical about them because they are so rare to get a good quality stone will break the bank. I have a decent budget (in my mind) to work with, but to get the same quality in a trillian as I''ve found in princess seems like a daunting task. Any recommendations on where to find a quality cut? I can''t even seem to find anyone that knows the best cut for them, I have read that there should be a H&A trillian coming out "soon" and if I can find one would be great.

Like I mentioned before I would call Jon at Good Old Gold and Mark at Engagement Rings Direct. They both are near the DD, have access to a ton of stones, and sell a lot of fancies. They both have very good eyes for them. And really, when you are buying a fancy cut diamond, a good pair of eyes is really the best thing to have. Most fancy cuts don't really have hard and fast rules, you just have to grab what you like when you see it.

Whiteflash and Winfield's Jeweler's might also be able to source them for you.

But you will need to CALL these vendors, no one is likely to list trillions on their websites, they just aren't hot sellers in diamonds.

I agree completely with Neatfreak! I have owned 4 trillions and you do have to see them and I would call either GOG or Eng RDirect like Neatfreak says.

I really like the straight edged ones, but in person, and depending on how the corners are set, it becomes much 'less' noticable. (FWIW) I want to say that when I was inquiring, most people seemed to be sourcing the ones with rounded edges, and suggesting that they looked nicer (more 'pleasing to the eye'). Also, you could ask her how she feels about star-set princess cuts. When I wanted a princess, I wanted it set on the diagonal, like N/S and E/W. It still gives you a unique look, but it is easier to find the princess cuts as you mentioned. If you go to Jareds, they should be able to plop a princess diagonally in any setting that you like, since their stones are not pre-set. Just an idea. I love Trillions, but I would have been really happy and excited with a starset princess.

I've never seen anyone with that in person, so it's a fun option.

Also, most jewelers don't have trillions in house (in my experience), and 'maul stoeres' seem particularly clueless about the cut. If you need a low set head, consider a custom or semi-custom setting (just a custom head)... I'm not sure where you live, but I hear you talking about the DD. If you are near NYC, I know that MDC diamonds seems to have a lot of trillions. At least you could eyeball them and get a feel for them. There is no consensus here on the board about the 'quality' of their work, per-se, but I haven't seen complaints, and internet searches also seem to bear out satisfied customers. No need to buy, but it might just be a good place to start if you are local
1.gif
Abazia's in FL also seems to carry a lot of Trillions, so if you are in that region, that could also be a good place to start! The have really good prices, and they seem to source many of the same stones as other PS vendors.

Good luck! Please keep us posted!

oh, getting an ASET scope might be helpful for looking at trillions

I can''t wait to see what you find for a stone and how you two choose to set it.

I personally love trills :)

I have a step cut clipped corner trill that is waiting for a setting and I still haven''t decided which way to go with it.
