Hello all,

What do you think about asscher sidestones on an oval center stone? I have two (1ctw) beautiful asscher stones that I am thinking about putting on the sides of a 1.3ct. oval. Feedback?

I have never seen a ring with this combination... I''ve been looking for a while with no success. This makes me even more insecure about the look, but I think the contrasting shapes might be nice together.

What are your opinions?? Have you ever seen a combo like this? Other unexpected combos?

Thanks!
B.

I personally don''t think it''d look right, but a picture could help me think differently. I don''t have photoshop or i''d create it for you. I think ovals look best with smaller ovals, or halfmooms or even traps, like headlights ring. I just don''t think the ring would flow right with the 2 squares on either side of the oval. Just my .02.

I''m kinda in agreement with mrssalvo but for me it''s the contrast of the brilliant oval with the two asscher step cut sides too. I mean... are the asschers very square? And maybe set the oval east/west?

i think there is a reason we have never seen a combo like that!

of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say....

It wouldn''t be my choice either. Two completely different affects. I can''t picture it in my mind - sorry!

I''d probably choose a larger asscher for the center stone if it were me. Or else make a band with 3 or more stones exactly the same size.

I guess you guys are right... I love this oval with trap. sides, so I was hoping to get a similar affect with my 2 asschers. My boyfriend''s budget is going to be pretty small (we will be getting engaged sometime this summer), so I was hoping to use my asscher earings as sidestones.

The angles make more sense, though, with the traps leading up to the oval. I''m still just looking for something unique... maybe I will end up buying the trap sidestones, and just let my boyfriend buy the center oval and setting.

I''m just not crazy about the 3 stone asscher rings for some reason. I think that I would rather have a simple asscher solitaire.

What are your thoughts on me pitching in for my own engagement ring?

Thank you so much in advance... I realize I am all over the place right now. Just trying to get a good grasp on what I want exactly so that I''m ready to shop when the time comes this summer!

i think the idea of pitching in for your own e-ring isn''t unwarranted...in other words, why not?! maybe not traditional but women pitch in on their own weddings, honeymoons, etc. so why not the e-ring!

btw, i like the ring you posted. if you''re in the mood for a fat oval, and i mean fat oval, why not go for the square aschers?....but then i like having a ring that isn''t popular, the in thing, or i''m going to see on anyone else''s finger. however, i think it will take some really planning to pull it off. i''d make sure i''d done my homework and had drawings made to make sure this is what i really wanted. actually, i can see it in my mind''s eye and i think it would be striking....but, like i said, i like the unusual.

ps i really do love the ring you posted!

What about an emerald cut in the middle? Then you have another step cut stone, linear, and it could look incredible. I wonder if there are any like this out there...I think it could look great, because the stones are both similar in appearance...but I would maybe avoid a square emerald, which would look more like an assher and stick with an ec that is not too long and skinny but not too square...hope this makes sense! Good luck...are your asschers a nice quality? what size center were you thinking of to balance the 1/2 carats on each side?

My asschers are .45ct each, F VVS2. I don''t know the other specs right now; the reports are at home.

I thought about an emerald, but it just isn''t me. I love them as solitaires, but for some reason not as 3 stone rings. Same with the asscher. I can''t explain it.

Also, for an emerald solitaire, it would have to be bigger to look right on my hand... I wear a size 7, so perhaps setting in E-W could work as well.

I was thinking of a center stone of about 1-1.3 carats... It depends on the stone.

If I get an asscher, the clarity will have to be higher, so we will only be able to afford around 1ct. With an oval, I can probably go to SI1 and get around a 1.2-1.3 with the same budget (and it will look bigger!)

So if I don''t use the asscher sidestones, here are the cuts that I would be willing to have in a solitaire:

asscher, oval, cushion.

I''ve thought about having a simple, bezeled solitaire. I think it would suit me, and it would still be quite unusual if I bezeled one of those cuts.

Thanks!

My opinion is go for what you like. Even if it''s an unusual combination, if you love it, why not get it? I have a combination probably not many other people would pick, but I like it. (I have a radiant with pear sapphire sides). The only suggestion I would make is put the three stones side by side to see if you really do like them together.

I think an oval with trap sides would be stunning. I also think it''s perfectly all right for you to pitch in to the cost of your e-ring...heck, it''s YOUR ring so you might as well get exactly what you want, regardless of where the funds are from. I''ve also seen an amazing oval with trillion sides...an unusual combination that I''d never think of, but it worked on her hand! I''m also a fan of ovals with half-moon sides.

If you get a solitaire, I love all of your cut choices. Cushions and asschers are just gorgeous and can have either a modern or antique feel, depending on how you set it. A really thin bezel would be just gorgeous on a cushion. I can''t recall if I''ve ever seen a bezel around an asscher but would be interested in seeing a picture (if anyone has one.)

Here is a very poor respresentation......

here is the 2nd version with the emerald center

how about a pear with the asschers??

I kinda like them with a pear...around what size center stone were you thinkink??

how about instead of placing the asschers square on the band you turn them so they are like a baseball diamond on the ring next to the ovaL?? that would be different. I will see if I can show you what I mean...

Thank you so much Sophie!!!

I do like the pear with the asschers! But if it is between getting an oval or pear, I would go for the oval. I can''t explain why!

I found this incredible setting by David Yurman, here is the link to a thread that I started about it.
https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/can-you-believe-how-beautiful-this-ring-is.44870/

I am in love with this setting. This should tell you how all over the place I am right now! The center stone is either a cushion or round, I can''t quite tell. I''m going to call about it in the next couple of days for more info.

I''m still not giving up on the asscher sidestones as possibilities, especially since the D. Yurman ring is no doubt way out of our budget! Just checking out all the possibilities!

Thanks again, so much!

no prob, it was fun!!

I personally think it would be a cool combo with an oval or a pear, I hope you do it.. I understand about being all over with looks right now, there are so many nice things out there!!

The DY setting is great!

Remember when I said to turn the asscher''s on their side? tHIS IS what I meant. Just picture the sapph''s as asschers. i think that it would look pretty cool!!

Oh... Sophie, I really like the aschers turned on their sides like that... that really sets the oval off. Bethany, if that Yurman ring doesn''t work out, this would be beautiful!

as for pitching in on payment, I think it''s cool... when you get married, his money vs. your money isn''t an issue anymore... why should it be during engagement either? It''s a joint agreement. A joint purchase is great. (just don''t tell my BF I said that!)

Oh, I just love the ring that Sophie posted with the sapphs!
I think that if you actually like the look of the asschers as sidestones, then great idea. But if you are going to use them just b/c you already have them, you might later regret it. I don''t think there''s anything wrong with chipping in, nor do I think there is anything wrong with getting a kicka$$ solitaire and adding sidestones of your choice at a later date.

Hey Sophie,

Where did you find that oval with sapphires? I really like it and just dropped it in my folder... wondering where it came from.

thanks!
Sum

BUMP--- Hey Sophie! Do you remember where that ring you posted came from??? I keep coming back and drooling but don''t know where to go to find it.

thanks!
Sum

Sophie, that''s a cool idea, like it a lot!!

I miss Ana/Valeria! She would be able to do a lovely mockup of your ring.

Maybe Irina wil help out? She does amazing photoshop stuff too.

I know this won''t sound like a traditional engagment ring, but I wonder what it would look like if you set the aschers diagonally across from each other, with a pair of ascher-cut sappires in the other corners, so that it looks like a tiny checkerboard:

Blue White
White Blue

No? Maybe not.

I will do better later

, i think with longer oval it can be stunning.
