I wonder what happens when the people get divorced...do they get to keep it? (maybe they do not want it then?)

This might vary depending on the state, but I believe that the wife keeps the ring in the event of a divorce. In Pennsylvania, courts have ruled that if the couple breaks up before the marriage occurs, the man gets the ring back. (That's why I've always bought my own rings since I became a collector. I never have to give them back if "things don't work out".
