I''m very new to this site, but it looks like a lot of people know what they are talking about when it comes to diamonds.
Today I went to the Kay''s store in New Bern, North Carolina ( we live in Havelock near the marine corp base so the closets real mall is 2+ hrs away) to talk about getting my engagement ring upgraded. They told me that I could do it and that I would get full price of what was paid for engagement ring originally but that I would have to double up. Which okay no big deal. So my original ring was 1800.00 so we needed to pick out a 3600.00 ring. The New Bern store did not have anything that was near our price range (either too big or too little) or a big enough selection being that it is a small store. So we went to Jacksonville, NC to look at their selection (an hour away). Same thing happened again. The rings were too much more than what we wanted to pay for them. I have a half carat princess cut solitaire engagement ring. I''d like to just go up to 3/4 carat in weight or get a three stone where the middle is a half carat and the two on the sides were 1/4 carats. However with the three stones it wont lay flush with my weeding ring which is just a channel set of princess diamonds (the sale''s lady said i''d never find a three stone to lay flat). She suggested that I just trade in the whole set, which i wouldn''t do because my wedding ring is very special to me being that it is my wedding ring ya know. After that she got snippy with me for not liking her idea or just getting a more expensive ring....so I got up and walked away and my husband said the good byes from there ha! I have all the certification that came with the engagement ring and all the original paper work as well. I guess my questions would be:

1. Can i get a good price for my ring somewhere else? and if so does anyone know of good reputable places in NC near the east coast.

2. Can kay''s order me a solitaire in the size i want for the price i''d like?

3. Is there such a thing as a three stone princess cut ring laying flush with a channel band?

thanks for any advice

1. Probably not.
2. Yes, call them tell them what you want and MAKE THEM get it in.
3. Yes, I think that''s possible-- in fact I think I''ve seen a couple but I don''t what Kay''s particular selection is.

That would be perfect, but i need it to be at kay''s and the total price has to be double what we paid originally...so it needs to be around 3600.00

I would certainly think they could call in a ring from another store. Chains do that all the time! And you certainly should be able to get a nice 3/4 ct. at that price.

The Leo one I posted is very close to that price. It''s from Kays.

The other''s were just to illustrate that the woman was just being a PITA and didn''t know what she was talking about.

Kay's will also let you get the $3400.00 ring if you agree to take a little less back for the trade in ie: you paid $1800.00 but you agree to take $1700.00 for the ring. Then you are double. Second idea: Jared will take your Kay ring as trade in also and has a bigger selection for a better price. They both are Sterling Jewelry Corp.

BRILLIANT!

So you think that if i took a picture to kays of a ring from jared''s that they could get it being that they are owned by the same company? The closest jared''s is 3 hours away

Kay''s has upgraded for me before and given me less than I paid when I wasn''t spending quite double the original amount. Also Jareds would have more selection for you so maybe plan a day trip to the store 3 hours away. Good luck.

Thanks, I''ve sent an email to both Kay and Jared asking if they have like a master catalog of all their rings since each store has different inventory and that what is online isn''t always what in the store. So it''s sunday so i''ll probably not hear form them till tuesday or wednesday. I use to live in Cincinnati and with that big city there were always more options ya know. I''m not use to living in the middle of no where Havelock, NC...things you do for love

I think you will have to go to the Jareds since they can''t sell the same merchandise (different buyers) BUT Jared WILL take your trade in for sure! I think it would be worth the trip for you to get something nicer from their collections which are MUCH bigger and BETTER than Kays! Make it a day (they will set it in an hour) and go have lunch! Try to bring original paperwork (if not they can look it up on their computer with an approximate date). Good luck and happy shopping!

I think I might just have to go to Jared''s I''ll have to just discuss it more in dept with my husband. I went to Kays today and found a ring that would be perfect. The sales lady even made it sound like I could take my old diamond and put into this new 3 stone setting as the center stone. I thought wow no way...yep no way. She called me back and told me I couldn''t take my stone and put it in a new stone as an up grade. So there went that. The sale''s lady also wouldn''t give me the model number....but i remember it haha 50TW1792. I''ll just have to be patient for now

Valentine''s Day is coming up...maybe you could make a weekend of it rather than just the day...so you''ll have time to mull it over before making the big purchase.

I think we are going to wait till we know exactly what we want so we don''t just make a rash purchase :) thanks everyone

Upgrade update!!!!

So Im not trading in my ring. I''m getting another channel setting to go on the other side of it. I''d like to buy online but I want to make sure it fits with my other two rings. Are 1/2carat channel setting rings about the same size?

It matters what size the stones are....is it 5 stones, 7 stones, 11 stones?
