I'm not 100% - but I think it was around in the late 90s. I'm going to do a bit more digging on this one for you to see what I can find out about smoked Welo and when the treatment was discovered =)2

If you mean the Indonesian blacks, they have a dark body color, usually jet black, and notorious for crazing!

Ah! So does that mean this is highly unlikely to be an Indonesian black opal considering it's as old as it is?

Though dark gray and brown body color occurs, it rarely does in Indonesian blacks. They are usually ink black and do not usually take a good polish.

OK so I couldn't find a confirmed date on when smoke treatment was discovered or invented, however from what I have read I am leaning towards it being available for Opals then. Also something I missed that you mentioned was that you have seen some long black needles, because Welo is hydrophane and crazes there is a chance those needles may be evidence of treatment.
