I was shopping for a white or light yellow sapphire, and bought this stone from Thai-International Trading Co. on ebay, now I'm asking the smart folks here at Pricescope to evaluate this stone:

It's a 10.2 x 9.1mm Oval Very Light Yellow Natural Sapphire from the Myanmar mine in Mogok. Here's the description given by the seller:

*Portuguese-Cut, No Nicks or Scratches
*6.0mm Depth, Full Brilliance, No Windowing
*Nearly Colorless, Hint of Light Yellow
*Origin: Mogok, Burma (Myanmar)
*There are no fractures in the gem, but only some light veil inclusions.

Unheated, No Treatment, 100% Natural. A small certificate for this gem, prepared by the Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences, will be sent along with the stone to the winner of this auction. The certificate confirms that the stone is natural Sapphire, and that it has not been heat treated.

Not a wonderful stone by any means, but better than most loose gemstones on ebay.

Thanks in advance for any comments or feedback (positive and negative!).

What do you plan to do with the stone? What was the price? Please define light veil inclusions...or shot some closer up shots of the stone. Thanks!

'Veil' looks like an old cobweb hanging between two random points inside the stone. They are probably clouds of pinpoint inclusions but one-layer thin like... a veil. Obviously these thing do not show at all if you look straight down the thin edge - and many times this is the only way through the face of the gem because they oriented this way by the cuter.

I would expect the color to be off-white rather than distinct yellow.

The pictures are satisfactory for me - they are already magnified relative to the actual size of the stone. Usually sellers put up those huge 20-30x ones, but do not sell you the microscope also

On the side...
Not too long ago, the same seller had a large blue-white (blue-tinted white) sapphire round and nicely cut that doesn't appear to have been sold - at least not through an Ebay auction. If you would find the cold white more appealing, it can't hurt to ask. None of their listings are veru expensive, but can't remember what the reserve for that might have been - in the hundreds anyway.

This stone was not expensive. I like the color very much- my taste is not traditional, to say the least. I was thinking maybe a pendant (6mm perhaps deep though) maybe in platinum if the stone is pretty.

Valeria, I saw two almost white stones on their website, one is 5.something carats, the other is 3 carats. Both are moderately priced, but they're listed as SI clarity. This stone was listed as eye-clean, but then he also mentioned the light veil inclusion- I won't know untill I see it which statement is correct. I suppose I could offer to "exchange" for a more expensive stone, but I'd be more inclined to offer for the 2.59 carat color change blue-to-violet step cut sapphire for $828.00 rather than these other two. Much nicer stone-I'd imagine he'd be likely to accept an "exchange" since this stone is markedly more expensive than the stone I purchased.

But then, I won't know unless I ask...

I wouldn't worry much about the "SI" denomination. There's hardly any standard for what is called what grade among colored stones and usually sellers have better eyes and see more imperfections than someone who does not handle dozens of stones a day does (if they want to) ... Perhaps Am-Thai does call 'SI' clarity something with obvious inclusions, perhaps not. If everything else about the stone appeals to you, why not. I can't see any inclusions aside the mist inside the stone - and if this is true, it wouldn't be a bad thing at least for me.

Is this it (left) ?

When you wrote 'step cut' I thought it would be rectangular... oh welll...

If those color change pictures were presented down two separate links rather than a single picture I would have thought they are of two different stones! They must have went though serious trouble to capture the color change...

The light yellow one is plain to see what it is in the pictures, this is allot more intriguing. But if the blue is anywhere true to nature, it would be rather nice, IMO.

Sure enough, I only see what you see.

Yes, this is the stone. Rather nice, indeed. I believe my stone has already shipped since the business day has ended in Bankok, but if I like the stone I''ve purchased, I may offer for this other stone.

Thanks for your help! I''ll post my thoughts when the stone arrives.

Thank you for all of your comments. This forum is excellent. CaraMish, I do look forward to your receipt of the stone. Regardless of how many images and words are included in a desciption, there is no substitute for seeing a gem in person. The gem should always look better in person than the images/words indicated. We hope this will be your reaction to the Sapphire once the parcel is received. Thank you again! Scott.

I will; my nose has been pressed to the front window the last few days. Of course, I chose the super-cheap snail mail option...

Haven''t been able to take photos yet-My two year-old climbs furniture whenever I turn on the computor or the camera, So I have many darling baby photos and very few gemstone shots. Not a bad situation in the long-term view, but I would love to show off some wonderful gemcutting too!

an 18k setting would really look awesome!
