Please vote on which book you would like to read. If you haven't joined in previously but would like to do so, please do! We'd love to have more members discussing books with us!

I picked one I've already read, but mostly because I want to talk about it with others. I'd really love to chat with someone about 1984. I read it for a now defunct bookclub and never got to have my chats about it.

How do we join the book club?

MC, all you need to do is read the book that's picked, then join in the discussions in the library section. Simple as that!

Okay, thanks. . .I'll keep a watch for which book is picked. Sounds like fun. I've read Water for Elephants and The Mermaid Chair.

ETA - and this is just in time. Just finished the book "On the Beach." That one where the last few remaining people on Earth plan for their soon-to-happen deaths from radiation poisoning.

I voted for The Help.

Dragonfly--thank you for taking control here! I feel awful that I suggested a PS book club and then bailed on it. I am SO IN for the next book, though, I promise! I'm just not used to discussing books as I read them, and then when I lost The Moonstone I just plain gave up.

I'm definitely joining this time! I'll vote later after I look into them a little more. Not familiar with all of them right now. I'm excited though!

I voted for The Help as well, though there were a couple others I thought were really interesting too.

I voted for the help too.

Haven, I mentioned that I thought it would be good to just have a thread in hangout. One thread, starting a couple of weeks from when the book is decided. People can join in and talk when they want, topics can just roll out and take a life of their own and we can just sit around and "chat" more, like a regular book club. That's my opinion, but I defer to the folks who at least made the effort to discuss the first book of the PS Book club.

TGal, I think we tried to just "chat" about the last book and it didn't really happen, so we tried some specific topics ... and that didn't really happen either. But I would say that's the background to why there are multiple Moonstone threads, just for anyone who didn't read the last book.

I still enjoy talking about books as I'm reading them, so I like the idea of a thread started soon after we start reading and then have it evolve as we go. Having a group to keep up with also kept me reading - I think if I'm just given a timeline I'll probably start falling back on other books I'm already reading instead and hoping to cram our selection into the last few days before the deadline.

Like others, I voted for a book I had already read, The Help, because in our discussion about it people seemed willing to read

this book if it were to be the one chosen. I know that I will read any other books in which I am interested on my own! The Help

seems to be doing well so far in the poll!

There are at least 4 or 5 books I'm interested in so I'd be happy with most of the ones on the list.

But if the thread opens in 2 weeks because that's when most people expect to finish and start discussing, I'm going to have to pass. I don't have the leisure time to read a 450 page book in 2 weeks, and if this thread is like most, the discussion will be hot and heavy in the first few days then taper off. By the time I finished, everyone would be off reading and discussing some other book, and I'd feel like I'm chasing a train I'll never catch.

A month is what has worked in the book clubs I'm familiar with, and that's what I'd be willing to commit to. If 2 weeks is what works better for most of you, I'll just have to leave the book club to you speed demons!

I voted for The Help. I've already read it, but would love to discuss it and re-read it.

I agree with this too. I'm willing to participate in discussions while reading, but there's no way I'll be finished in two weeks. A month is probably more doable, or even a month and a half since I'm currently reading two other books that I'd like to finish. If it were shorter maybe, but 450 pages is a lot in a short time period!

There is no rule that says this has to be read in two weeks rather than a month, at least no rule I can remember and I have been in the book club since its inception. The problem with having a discussion in one month (if everyone agrees to it), is enforcing it. We have to agree not to start any threads to discuss the book until a certain date that is specified in advance. That can be done if people want to do it.

I agree, if everyone (or a majority) decide that we want to set a specific date to start discussion that is fine by me! I'll be happy with that too. I actually felt somewhat the same, because others read The Moonstone faster than I did. I'd think we could say a month out from the day the book is fully decided would work, if that works for others?

I have no time to read and/or participate in a book club, but for anyone out there, I LOVED the curious incident of the dog in the night time.

Deb, TGal had suggested two weeks (at least I think it was TGal). I don't mind discussions at 2 weeks, but I definitely won't be close to finished by then. Like I said, if we wait until a month to start discussions, I probably won't even start reading the book until 3 weeks in. I'm a slacker

The Help is long. . .didn't look that up. I may be ready in a month as long as we don't have to do a book report on it! lol Got enough of those already lined up this year.

I voted for The Help- read it in 3 days b/c I couldn't put it down! Loved it.

I didn't pick one because I didn't have a clue about any of the titles. However, since I am pretty much laid up with this broken back when I'm not at work, I am SO READY to read a book and talk about it. I started Wicked, but haven't felt compelled to pick it back up. I will read that until someone chooses the winner for our read. I can't wait!! :appl:

I did the Poll for three days, but am going to watch it tomorrow and see where we are. :appl:

What if we set the discussion for Dec. 1 or thereabouts? That gives more than a month to read it, and gets us past Thanksgiving craziness/family time before beginning discussion but doesn't put us right at Christmas either.

I love deadlines...it organizes me. I like BEG's suggestion of Dec. 1.

I really like this idea. I have not participated in the book club before. I would vote for the NES, but only if it is the one with Falcore - because it was my (one of) favourite movies as a kid and we bought the DVD this year for future kiddos. But I assume watching the DVD is counted as cheating, right? :cheeky:

I'll go look up The Help and see if I can read it.

Well everyone it looks like The Help is by far the winner. I would say we can start reading any time, and if we want to pick a group discussion time frame?

Yay for The Help!

I really like the idea of holding off on all discussion until a particular date. December 1st would be my preference, but I understand if everyone prefers to start sooner. I'm just not able to discuss a book until I've finished it, and with NaNoWriMo starting 11/1, I'll need until 12/1 to finish The Help.

Yay for the PS Book Club! I'm so happy it's live!

(I just made a bunch of Peace Love Book Clubs buttons and put them on my door for people to take. I wish I could send them to all of you!)

I also had to bail on the last one, work got hectic. I hope I will be able to join in on the next one. I also voted for The Help, I have heard great things!

I feel like we should set the discussion for a certain date and if others are a bit behind they can join in when they feel comfortable. I felt like I was being left behind on past discussion and scrambled to get up to where others were to discuss. I also feel like I can grasp more of the book if I read into it a ways before discussing.

Yay for The Help!

I reiterate my suggestion of Dec. 1 as the start date for discussion, and also suggest (or repeat others actually) that we just discuss the entire book in one go, on that date, instead of chapters. I'm a bit biased - I've always hated chapter discussions in high school and college. I like getting the sense and feel for the entire storyline before discussing :)
