We Put A Diamond on Hold!

Hi Ladies!!

Something unexpected happened today.... we put a diamond on hold! Completely unexpected I should add.

So as many of you might already know, I started off wanting a round brilliant and then recently fell in love with the August Vintage Cushion from GOG. However after giving it some more thought, reviewing their diamonds and speaking with them, I just honestly knew I could never get the size and color combination that I wanted within SO's budget.

SO and I were still planning on making the purchase this summer of our engagement diamond and ring once we got a few other household expenses taken care of... but this morning while randomly browsing James Allen website and came upon a really good deal. It was an I color 1.7 carat round brilliant, S12 but looked completely eye-clean from the video and picture, depth was under 62% so the spread was larger too... AGS Ideal 0... HCA Score of 1.5.... higher crown which I love.... and with the wiretransfer/pricescope discount came out 2.3k under SO's budget.

I showed it to SO asking if we should put it on hold... and not expecting much as we were really hoping to purchase this summer... and he replied with, "Yes.". He was ecstatic that the price was 2.3k under his budget so he told me to make the move and put it on hold. They are now sending us over ASET/IdealScope images in the next few days and we will make our decision then on whether to purchase it.

Woah. This is still so surreal to me.

I really wanted the Vatche U113 but I'm not sure how that will work out if we end up getting the diamond from James Allen. We might also just buy the diamond and hold off on the setting for now until we decide.

I'm also eyeing the Tiffany Half Round from BGD as it's not as expensive as most but beautiful and classic.

So... not sure yet.

I think there are a few PS vendors that carry Vatche including IDJ and GOG so it's possible to send your diamonds to one of those vendors to be set. You'll have to get insurance on it beforehand though. Anyway, it sounds like you have plenty of time to decide. I'm happy that you found the perfect stone though!

Fantastic news Maple!! That's so exciting - SO was on board, it fell in the price range (or UNDER!) and things are moving forward - lots of PS dust that the next news we have is an engagement!!! Very exciting!!!

We made the purchase! The funds have been wired transfered.

I read up on "painted girdles" after the comments were made. It sounds like alot of diamonds are "painted" to some extent. It's when it negatively effects the diamond that GIA/AGS gives it a bad grading. Also, the effects of painting depend on other factors. For example, it's a positive thing on higher crowns (Ex: 35 degrees) like mine.

Lastly, the Gemologist replied to my concern about painting girdles (after reading the comments on my Rocky thread) by stating that the girdles on this diamond are not in fact painted? Here was the gemologist reply, "There is no painting or digging going on in this diamond, some pavilion mains are the tiniest bit off in alignment with the crown bezels.".

When it arrives we will make the final decision on keeping it. At this point, I'm trusting AGS and I don't have a major concern that they would have given an AGS 0 ideal cut score to a diamond that looked ugly.

Yay! I agree with you on the AGS0 thing. It can't possibly be a bad diamond if it got that rating. I'm so happy that you found an eye clean SI2 in that size! IMO, you're very lucky.

I am still interested in the Vatche U113.... but budget was very important for SO as he was purchasing the ring and diamond at least 3 months or so before he expected to. Because of that, I ended up giving up on the U113 (for now) with the hope of liking the 2.5mm Knife Edge james allen setting.

SO said we can always change the setting a year or two from now after we get over wedding and engagement ring expenses pass. So ideally, I will be able to be content and happy with that setting for the time being. If I'm not however, I will likely see if I can convince SO to change it to the Vatche and return the James Allen one within the 60 day return period.

I was told by James Allen customer service that the knife edge is not as pronounced as the pictures lead one to believe. We will see. Fingers crossed!

Congrats maple! That's wonderful. If you are not 100% sure about the JA setting, that's perfectly fine to try them out. Just be careful because they do expect you to return it in brand new condition if you choose to return it. If it shows any signs of wear, then you will be charged a restocking fee by JA.

Hi Ladies!

My engagement ring is here! It got here yesterday! I still haven't had a chance to look at it and I dont know if SO will let me take a peak prior to proposing.
