Thought I would kick it off this week.

How are we all doing?

Had a great workout this morning, went to the gym on my own as Hubby is away until the end of the week, so rather proud of myself!

Last night I tried on some old clothes I couldn''t get into and they fitted beautifully, so I was delighted

Amazing the results I have got in 5 weeks of workouts, this is week 6. I did 30 mins on the crosstrainer and 15 on the treadmill. I look around as I am exercising and some people in there don''t seem to be putting any effort in at all and I find that incredible - why bother if you aren''t going to work at it?
33.gif
Oh well, different strokes for different folks I suppose!

Have a great week everyone

Well, I started my workout week yesterday morning by running in a 5K race. It was pretty hot, but at least the race was early in the morning. It was still 90 by the time the race was over! I felt pretty good and finished the race in a decent time. I''m still a long way from the half marathon, but I wanted to run in a couple of practice races because I tend to run a lot differently than I would if I were just jogging around the neighborhood.

Tonight I would like to get a run in outside. It''s supposed to hit 100 here today, so hopefully it will cool down to 85 by the time I get around to running. I''m also going to do some weight training.

I hope everyone has a great week of working out!

Well done Coda! That''s great

Good morning ladies.

I was supposed to have my trainer this morning, but she didn''t show up for some reason so I did an hour of cardio instead. I also had an hour tennis lesson yesterday...

However, I did have a realatively unhealthy breakfast... I''m blaming the PMS!

hi gals...happy monday (hah!)

so this weekend wasn''t too bad, better than typically on the weekends, on saturday morning i just had an egg white omelet with some cheese, and we went to this fave mexi place for lunch and i get their meatball soup and typically chocolate mousse but i was stuffed after the soup and sharing some rice and beans with greg so i didn''t get the mousse. which hurt because I LOVE IT but i really was full and that would just have made me feel sick. so on saturday night we shared a pizza and salad at home then went for a walk. i walked 2m in the morning with portia, about 1.5m with greg on saturday during the day running our errands and then we went for about a 1.5m walk that night after pizza (where i also got an ice cream from baskin robbins, ha ha, to make up for the lost mousse!!)... so that night we were both pretty tired and i felt good about at least walking so much, i figure about 5 miles total for sat.

on sunday we went to an art and wine festival so breakfast i just had an egg white omelet with some cheese and coffee and then for lunch at the festival, woo hoo...we had bbq chicken, some fried calamari and garlic fries with lemonade. then we walked about 2 miles between the festival and walking to our friend''s house afterwards. by the time we took the train home we were tired from all the sun so we just had grilled cheese for dinner.

congrats coda on the 5k!! lorelei, keep plugging away gal sounds like you are doing great. amanda, how is your progress coming...are you still on WW?

Good morning ladies!!

Well, this weekend wasn''t too great for my diet, but I tried to keep my portions under control. We had pasta for dinner on Saturday, and I had the leftovers from my entree for lunch on Sunday. On Sunday night, we went to a Japanese restaurant that specializes in hot pot, with all-you-can-eat beef, veggies, noodles, and mushrooms. I didn''t really stuff myself like I usually do, so that''s good.

I will be leaving the house in 10 minutes for a one-hour walk/jog, so I should be able to cover at least two miles in that time frame. Then I''ll be doing some sit-ups on the bench we have at home.

And since I''m heading downtown anyway, I''ll be dropping by Whole Foods for some food, just because Ms. Mara keeps raving about it, and her meals always sound so yummy. Let me see what I can find for dinner tonight.

Whoo hoo! I pretty much escaped this weekend unscathed!

Re: cake tasting. Solution was to invite my cousin and her husband.
9.gif
They gave you the same amount of cake regardless of how many people are there, so we had two extra mouths consuming cake! So only half as much for me...and I didn''t have too much at all.

Later on that night, it was someone''s bday so we about 20 of us went to Buca di Peppo. That place serves crazy amounts of food and Asians have a habit of thinking there will be some kind of food shortage and ordered enough for 40 people! I didn''t want to deprive myself so I had a bite or two of things that looked good, and passed on other items. In the end, I only had a small serve of salad, 3 bites of garlic bread, a bit of two different pastas and one small slice of thin crust pizza. I was totally satisified but not grossy full. There was tons I didn''t eat! Yay!

I''ve lost a pound last week. Back on the wagon today with egg white breakfast and some greek yoghurt with a splattering of honey.

Good luck this week girls!

TG i actually find at places where we do large shared group dinners, i end up eating WAY less than when it''s just Greg and I or a small group. the reason is that i get totally distracted gabbing to people that i don''t eat nearly as much. especially if it''s a passed food kind of atmosphere...i tend to just take a bit and then half the time don''t get more because i get distracted. so it works out okay. and sharing things like desserts is perfect because then you just get 2-3 bites instead of having to share 1/2 with your hubby, hehe.

by the way cinderella, your body is smokin''!!! i remember thinking later, hello this gal is on a diet? i''d love to have your figure girl. so whatever you are doing, keep it up! hehee.

oh and lol re: whole foods, i was thinking on the way into the office that i can''t wait to go to WF later to get our dinner and maybe we''d do something yummy like seasoned burgers or similar..mmmm. hehee. i also LOVE their mixed green salad pre-packed with cranberries, walnuts etc. that is my fave...and it''s great as a side dish for 2...sometimes we''ll have roasted chicken or similar and then split the salad. mmmm!! okay now i''m hungry!

Sounds like everyone''s week is off to a good start! Last week, I managed to workout 4 times and was pretty happy w/that. It felt good to get back into the routine. Tonight, I am going into Phase 4 of my running routine. It is supposed to be week 4 but I''ve gone a bit slower and only workout 2 times/wk at the gym so sometimes I stick w/the same phase for 2 weeks. Anyway, this week I : run 3 min, walk 90 sec, run 5 min, walk 2.5 min, run 3 min., walk 90 sec, run 5 min.
I''m hoping I can keep up w/that. I know it''ll be tough but I''m hoping to complete the whole thing. My weekend eating wasn''t great but not too bad. I''m hoping to keep this week''s eating pretty healthy so that I can make some progress.

Lorelei, that''s great that your clothes fit well. That is always such great motivation!
Coda, congratulations on running a 5K!! My bf asked me a couple weeks ago if I''d ever want to run in a race. At that point, I said no but now I think I might do that one of these days. I have a long way to go but it would feel like such a great accomplishment. When do you plan on running the half marathon?
Amanda, how long have you been taking tennis lessons? I always thought that would be fun. I''ve gone out a couple times on my own and played w/my son but we are both so, so bad!! It''s pretty funny actually b/c we get lots of exercise running to catch the ball that we can''t ever seem to hit.
Mara, that''s great that you got in all that walking over the weekend. I think I might suggest going for a walk w/my bf one of these evenings that we are together. I am trying to get myself out of the house as much as possible. The other night I had to go to Osco so I rode my bike and my son rode his scooter. It was fun to just be outside and do something different.
TG, congrats on losing a lb. That always helps keep me going.
Cinderella, I wish I was about to leave to work out now. A one hour walk/jog sounds great!

Well, back to work for me.. Have a good evening everyone.

This weeks is not off to such a great start since I went to the beach this weekend with the girls (I missed fitday a lot!). However, I am considering joining a local gym that offers lots of options for cardio, cycling, and weights as well as all sorts of classes (pilates, yoga, step, body pump, kick boxing, etc) So, HOPEFULLY I will have a normal exercise routine by the end of summer.

Mara, that does make sense. But normally I''m pretty fixated on food and take too much. This time I just put a little on my plate and focused on the social aspect, like you said.

dixie, I think that is a great way to run! Keeps it interesting and I''ve heard doing variations in the routine keeps the body burning. When I ran my marathons, I trained my body to become so efficient, I never lost a pound. Not to mention all the carbo loading I was doing, because I thought I "needed" it.
38.gif

I''m reading this thread for inspiration......you ladies are so focused!
16.gif

There is so much temptation during the summer months.....frozen sugary drinks, high fat dips, lots of bbq''d meats...........

Entertaining takes its toll as I use it as an excuse to make yummy (fattening) appetizers (and usually have leftovers, which of course I eat).

Soooooo, I will keep reading in hopes of self redemption.

lol heather. i know what you mean about the fatty foods for entertaining...i love spinach artichoke dip and when people come over it's one of the fave things for me to get. haha. or guac..yum!!

tonite is mozz, basil and tomato salad...caprese yum!!! olive oil and pepper and salt.

also got halibut burgers from whole foods, which were divine last week. i'm putting a bit of cajun seasoning on for some spice, and make some aoili with lemon, mayo and herbed dijon....yum. red onion and tomatoes and a wheat bun! i can't wait for dinner!!!

i am thinking of going to workout but this weekend my right arm started hurting again, i have NO idea why as it's been doing great and i don't want to overdo it...but i haven't worked out since thurs. so i don't know if it's upset that i haven't used it much since thurs after using it so much for weeks...so maybe i SHOULD go. but it is pretty darn hot out and i don't want to DIE by working out at 7pm when it's still light vs going for a 2mile walk or so with greg after dark. hmm decisions decisions.
5.gif

Mara, thanks for the compliment, you''re pretty hot yourself!!
2.gif
I was looking at your arms (and I admit, butt, but I swear it was all innocent!!! It was an envy thing!) and thinking, maybe I should hit kickboxing classes more often instead of just working with weights. *Sigh* But the classes are expensive, and I''m still debating whether I should just sign up for it or just stick with the gym and treadmill (boring).

Is anyone else tempted to have a bbq in this weather? I sooo want to go to the local Korean market and get some marinated short ribs to just throw on the grill. Yummy. But so bad for you. But so good. Someone stop me!!!!

Yes! I love summer bbqs. Trying to cut down, but to tame the best, I did to a simple seasoned chicken breast not too long ago. Not my idea of a sinful bbq, but I need to be healthy.

We will cave and do the Korean bbq thing though, just because it''s so yummy on the bbq. It''s not as bad for you as you think, especially if you make your own and don''t put all the sugar that the premade ones do. My mom uses a bit of sugar but also uses grated asian pear for sweetness. I eat it without much rice, wrapped up in Korean lettuce leaves with a bit of kimchee or hot bean paste.

All this Korean food talk is driving me batty today. I only learned how to cook three years ago, and haven''t gotten around to learn Korean cooking yet - which means if I crave Korean food, I have to go out to a restaurant...no good.

I just went to yoga tonight for the first time in years!! Time flew by while I was in class. Very relaxing.
16.gif

I think i''ll go tomorrow as well!

lol cinderella..the kbox does work out the arms but im serious that you looked fab, all over!!

did you find anything good at whole foods today?

we got halibut burgers and made a caprese salad, yummm...also had some of those frozen potatoes/fries that i love from WF...i swear they are sooo good and lowfat too. hits the carb/fry spot when you need it.

i walked 1m with portia today, and then went to kbox tonite and then walked 1m with portia and greg tonite after it cooled down a bit. whew!!

Dinner was salmon topped with TJ''s Bruschetta sauce and steamed veggies. Cherries for dessert (both rainier and bing, yum!) Gotta love summer...

Went to the gym to try out a 7 pm box aerobics class. The instructor never showed up and the staff didn''t know where she was. My gym is SO ghetto and cheap. But I only pay 4 bucks a month so I can''t complain and it''s perfectly fine for a regular workout. So I ran for 30 and did eliptical for 15. There was a yoga class at 8, so for kicks I tried that too. Man, I have no balance or flexibility!
38.gif

So all and all, a decent day today. I might venture over to whole foods tomorrow, as I am in a rut with the stuff I buy at TJs.

oh by the way i have been raving about these baked fries..

this is the company that makes them:

http://www.alexiafoods.com/why_alexia.php

they come in 4-5 various types/versions/flavors...and we have tried 2-3 and they are all yummy. you have to really bake them and then i put them under the flame on the broiler for about 5 minutes so they get nice and crisp. if i have time i brush them with a bit of olive oil and it makes them extra crispy. the garlic fries are the best and we have also tried oven fries and oven reds and been really happy. i love herbs and garlic on fries so it's perfect.

I admit, I was too lazy to get my butt over to Whole Foods. The nearest one is in the South of Market district, and I had been running errands all day, so I got lazy.

I *will* go there tomorrow, I promise myself. I''ll be in the area for a pedicure anyway, so I''ll have to pick up something for dinner. The marinated fish they have available sounds good. Tonight, we had baked chicken thighs, marinated in garlic, olive oil, basil and oregano; spinach and rice. I kept my portions pretty much under control, so I''m proud of myself.

Tomorrow, depending on the weather, I will either go jogging or kickboxing class.

Mara, why, oh why did you have to mention the fries? That''s my one major weakness. I love fries with a passion. That''s the one thing that makes me break a good diet week. That and churros from Disneyland. Now I have to go buy those fries and eat them all in one sitting, most likely.

I walked my dog 2 miles yesterday but I havent been to the gym in 4 days. We are having a heat wave for us in Ireland-its about 28 degrees celcius over here and because we dont get that weather often, the air conditioning is not great in the gym and its even hotter in there than it is outside so I just cant get myself to go there in this heat. Im going to take the dog out again this afternoon for another walk and go to the park with her this evening and try and get back into the gym tomorrow-Ive kind of lost some of my motivation and I really want it back but just cant find it! Help!!

Morning,

I did it! I completed the next phase of the running program. It was tough at the end but I am so glad that I stuck through (especially since my eating wasn''t so good last night). It''s hard to imagine running w/o stopping in between but it actually seems possible now that I''m making progress. I love actually seeing the progress. That is the one thing that keeps me working out. You don''t see that as much when doing the tapes at home. Lately, I''ve been thinking of paying off my Bally''s contract to join a local gym so that I can do that more often, versus using tapes twice a week. I really like the idea of taking classes but none of them ever fit my schedule at Bally''s. I''d love to take a yoga class too. I feel so much more relaxed after and for me, it''s a true workout b/c I find myself sweating all through the class... at least some of the yoga classes.
Today, I didn''t work out this morning so somehow I have to force myself tonight. That is tough!

Everyone''s dinners really sound good! I think I may have to start cooking a bit more. But how do you maintain energy to work, workout and cook??? You guys are amazing!!

Have a good day!

Thanks for the encouragement on the race, everyone. I''m a long way from a half marathon, but I wanted to run a short race just to get into race mode. I tend to run quite differently in a race than I do when I''m training on my own. Dixie, you should think about running a 5K. You''ll be surprised how easy it is as long as you pace yourself. I remember the first 5K I ran in, I ran really fast the first two miles and couldn''t complete the race, at least not running. I remember I felt like such a loser as I trudged to the finish line.

It sounds like everyone else is doing well, and I am also. I waited until around 7:30 to jog outside last night, and it wasn''t too bad. I also did some weights. So far the workouts are going pretty well, so let''s hope that continues. Tonight I want to do another outdoor run, but I''m going to give the weights a break.

Dixie, that is great! You inspired me last night so I did running in a similar manner (run for 5 minutes, break for 1, etc etc). I ran at a 5.5 pace, which isn''t that far off from my marathon pace and I could barely make 5 minutes straight. This coming from a girl who ran over 5 hours this past March. It''s amazing how fast your body gets out of shape! So I wanted to encourage you to keep at it...your body will start to make amazing strides.

And speaking of 5K races, marathons and what not...a couple of years ago, I did the insane...decided to train for my first race - a marathon, without ever having run a smaller race. I could already run 4 miles comfortably at the time (they say you should at least be able to run 5 before you start training), so I did a 18 week training session and managed to finish the race on a 90 degree day. 2 years later I did it again with my cousin, who hadn''t ever run race either. I really don''t recommend doing it this way, but she had her heart set on it so I told her I''d run with her to support her. Our first run, she had really bad knee pains and stopped at mile 2. My FI and I pretty much thought she''d never make it. But she was SO dedicated and really kicked my a** on the day of the race.

I really think anyone can do it. It''s grueling (running 5 days a week) and very mental, but if I could do two, anyone can. I did end up doing a 5K earlier this year while I was training for my 2nd marathon, and while that was totally fun, nothing beats the high of a marathon. Starting off at the gun with 25,000 crazy people is just such a kick!

How long is a 5k? I''m pretty sure we had this discussion on here before, but I just can''t remember. Part of the problem w/even thinking about running for a long distance is that running outside seems much harder to me than in a gym. The other day, I went to a local track and could barely run a 1/4 of that w/o stopping. At the gym, I can now go 3-5 minutes and be ok. Of course, it was hot and my first time in a long time outside but still, seemed harder. Does anyone else have a preference between indoor and outdoor running? Is it something you adjust to? I want to keep up the outdoor running here and there so that I can adjust to it, if that''s how it works. Are there certain races where you have to run vs. walk? I participated in a 3k but most people were walking, in fact, I don''t remember seeing people run, but I wasn''t paying much attention.
Thanks TG! I appreciate your comments b/c I am so often motivated by others on here. 5.5 pace seems so fast to me! I am at a 4.2/4.3 pace now, started at 4.1 so I''m slowly gaining. Do you walk at a different speed? I can''t seem to get past 3.5/3.6 walking.
Wow, running for over 5 hours...talk about inspiring.
36.gif
Now, I''m feeling much better about my workout tonight. If it weren''t so darned hot here, I might actually go for a run/walk.

Does anyone have thoughts for the pain in the front of your lower leg when running? I really should know what that part of my leg is but I can''t remember. It happens sometimes while I''m running and tends to go away or at least be bearable so that I can finish.

Is it really on Tuesday??

Running inside is MUCH harder for me, because all I do is look at the clock. Running outside can be fun. It''s easier to stretch yourself by saying "just run to that tree." In the same vein, running around a track would be very hard because it''s repetitive. The key to running outside is to find a nice place to run...with distractions and listen to heart pumpin'' music!

From memory, it''s 1.6 kilometers to 1 mile. So a 5 K is about 3 miles or so. As for pace, you gotta do what is comfortable. Believe it or not, 5.5 pace is not considered all that fast...and I was slower in my second marathon. But I am only 5''5'''' and have shorter asian legs, so not much I can do to increase stride.

If you are going to train for a race, I highly recommend training outside. Your body needs to acclimate to wind conditions and what not.

I do tend to walk at about a 3.5 speed. I get shin splints if I walk much faster. That might be some of the pain you are feeling. What you will find when you run is that you have to learn to outrun some of the pain (cramps, etc). It does go away. however you should aways get checked out by a doctor to see if you have anything to be really concerned about. My knee always gave me trouble in the beginning of a run, but then your body warms up and you get into a runner''s high. I always told my cousin that 5 mile runs (which soon become "short" runs in marathon training") never really get easier even though you get through 10, 15, 20 mile runs. The reason is that it takes awhile for your body to get going! 8 or 9 mile runs used to be my favorite, because I get runner''s high at around mile 6 and goes for the rest of the run. Plus there''s no double digit mileage mental block to screw you over.

It''s a very strange feeling to be running and feel absolutely no pain...just your body moving like a machine. Runner''s high is definitely neat. But I''ll never feel it again because there is NO way I will ever take up running like that again.

so, now that it's full on summertime...i am craving BURGERS lately. and we all know how unhealthy THAT can get....so i found this recipe online and it's actually really close to the one we do when we make our burgers at home and we use the super lean 93/7 meat anyway and we have never had a problem with them coming out dry.

so anyway figured i'd put the recipe out here for you gals to use in case anyone else is craving a burger fix like i am!!!

our own recipe is really similar to this (who knew that it was low-fat to begin with?!) but we also add A-1, garlic powder, and some breadcrumbs which helps it not stick to the grill so much and keeps it all together better. we top them with lettuce, tomato, champagne herbed dijon and some red onion and typically use whole wheat buns or similar.

Low Fat Burgers
From Fiona Haynes,
Your Guide to Low Fat Cooking.

For these low fat burgers, choose extra-lean ground beef, which contains 5% fat by weight, compared with 25-30% fat in regular ground beef. Adding tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce and some minced onion ensures these low fat patties make moist burgers. Serve on whole grain or sourdough buns, with a range of low fat condiments.

INGREDIENTS:
1 pound extra-lean ground beef (95% lean)
1/4 cup minced onion
1 garlic clove, crushed
2 tbsp fresh chopped minced parsley
2 tbsp tomato sauce
1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
1 egg white

PREPARATION:
Combine ingredients in a large bowl using a fork. When combined, form 4 patties, 3/4-inch thick. Broil or grill for 5-6 minutes per side, to an internal temperature of 160 degrees.

Per Serving: Calories 159, Calories from Fat 51, Total Fat 5.7g (Sat 3g), Cholesterol 70mg, Sodium 139mg, Carbohydrate 2g, Fiber 0.3g, Protein 25.1g

Thanks TG, for all the info. I can''t imagine running for 3 miles straight, but I''m excited to have a goal to strive for. Of course, in between that, I plan to have many smaller goals so that I can actually accomplish the big one. What you said about running outside makes sense, and I''ll have to try it somewhere other than a track. Although I certainly don''t consider myself "in training" for anything yet. I really need to update my mp3 player too so that I can have some music. It does get quite boring.
Runner''s high...sounds nice!
1.gif
Maybe one day.
Today I just have to convince myself to actually work out when I go home. I have to things to do initially so I know it''ll be later when I finally have the time. But I do like to have something positive to talk about when I come here in the mornings.
9.gif

Mara, I''ve also done turkey burgers before too, which are fairly healthy. I actually prefer them to beef but that''s just my preference. Have you ever made a veggie burger? I always wonder what''s actually inside of those.

Oh Dixie, I have all the faith in the world you will be able to. Just add a few feet at time...or a block if you can. It adds up. If you can, chart out a 3 mile course around your house with your car. You''ll be amazed at what having a distance goal will do. So every week you get to your starting line and say I only need to run 5 minutes. Then you keeping adding. In a few months, voila! Done! I promise you, your body can be trained to do amazing things! It''s also great to have music because if a great song comes up, you can just try to make it through "one more song." It''s all mental I tell you.

I wonder what''s inside those veggie burgers too, which is why I don''t eat them.
9.gif
I''d rather splurge on the real thing once in a while. I do eat turkey burgers now, but for a long time I didn''t even care to try. The first time I tried them was at the encouragement of my friend who doesn''t eat red meat. We ordered two of them and when we got them, it was SO delicious! I exclaimed "Wow, is this what I have been missing? It tastes like the real thing!" She had already taken a bite, but looked at me funny. Tentatively took another bite and put her burger down.

Yup, you got it...they had accidentally given us regular red meat burgers. LOL. Interestingly enough, she loves meat now...something triggered the craving when she got pregnant. She''s not the first person I''ve known that to happen to either.

hehe no i am not a real veggie burger fan or turkey burgers either...i need BEEF!!!!!!
9.gif
i figure if i am going to eat turkey burger i might as well eat a beef! esp since you can get such lean beef now. but if someone put a turkey burger in front of me, i''d try it. hehee.

those veggie ones are kinda scary to me because they all seem so ''processed''...it reminds me a little of hot dogs!
