Hi everyone! I''m on a business trip right now, but I''m determined to run 3 times a week until my race. I went down to the hotel "gym" (aka old guest room with a treadmill in it) and attempted to run 3 miles on this treadmill. It was terrible!! The treadmill was pushing me in the opposite direction & not propelling me along at all! I made it through 2 miles, but then I had to stop. It was killing my lower legs & I could barely breathe. I felt like someone was pushing me backwards the entire time. ugh! I''m going to try again tomorrow, hoping for some freak maintenance on this thing & hopefully I''ll make my goal.

Anyway...it sounds like everyone is doing great with their workouts! Dixie, congrats on your progress with your running program! If you ever wanted to run in a 5K, you absolutely could even if you walked a little bit. In the 2 that I''ve raced in, I''ve definitely walked maybe 1/3 of the total race. I finished both races in just under 36 minutes. When I run on the treadmill, I alternate between 5.0 mph for running & 3.5-3.8 for walking times. When I first started, I ran at 4.8 mph & would walk between 3.2-3.5. I love the races because they keep me motivated to run the mileage at the gym and the race is a good measure of my progress. Plus, the races are fun! There are always tons of people at them & many times you''ll get a good crowd cheering everyone on. So in my opinion, you should definitely sign up for one (especially if you can convince some friends - that always makes it more fun!) and not be concerned at all about running the whole thing!

I love all types of burgers...regular beef burgers, turkey burgers, veggie burgers & buffalo burgers. Mmmmmmmmmm, mmmmmmm (I''m getting hungry!). My fiance & I buy the 99% lean ground turkey, so it''s super healthy and quite tasty. We usually put bbq sauce, garlic, onion, basil, oregano & pepper in them. They are usually so moist that we don''t even need cheese. For veggie burgers, we are sure never to buy the ones with the soy in them (I don''t like them & I don''t want my veggie burger pretending to be a hamburger). I tend to buy the ones where I know what the ingredients are (carrots, peas, corn meal, etc). They really are quite yummy, but absolutely not a substitute for a real burger.

Ok, I should stop rambling now - have a great week all!

Oh burgers, yum! I love beef too. Thanks for the burger cooking tips, Mara.

Oh wow, I don''t know how some of you gals do it. Running for 5 hours? I can barely run for 30 minutes without feeling like I''m about to collapse. You girls are good!

Today, I ate two servings of Frosted Miniwheats for breakfast/lunch. Didn''t really have time for a real lunch. I also went for a one mile jog and will be going to kickboxing class tonight; we''ll be doing mainly bag work, so that''s my strength training.

I also have this really weird thing with orange TicTacs. Does anyone else have that problem? I''d buy a six-pack and I''d eat those mints like they''re chewable candy or something. And they taste so good!! I ate two boxes today, plus a cup of tapioca pudding.

For dinner, I actually made it into Whole Foods today and was shocked by how big the store was. I wandered around for half an hour trying to locate stuff. I couldn''t find those fries no matter how many circuits I made, so I finally asked someone and had to be shown to where the freezers were. Turns out I walked right past them twice without seeing them. So I bought some halibut and had the counterperson marinate it in lemon, thyme and rosemary, I think. I''ll be baking it in the oven, so I"ll let you guys know how it turned out.

And the fries are going to be part of the meal. If I''m going to be relatively good, I''ve got to be bad sometimes.

Cinderella, the fries aren''t bad though!! I don''t know which ones you got but the oven fries with rosemary and garlic on them are something like 130 calories and 3.5g of fat for 1 serving, which is about ummmm ~8 fries. So it''s not SO bad. I actually have been splitting the bag up in 2...so the bag is 5 servings and if I split the bag in two then we each have like 1.25 servings which is just enough actually...I totally would overdose on them too if I could so by splitting the bag then I have to consciously put the other serving in which makes me feel guilty..hee hee. Also I find that if we do something like fish or chicken with the 1.25 servings of fries and then a small salad each, it''s a complete/balanced meal and is just enough! Anyway...I LOVE LOVE the fries!! Tell me what you think. And be sure to cook them enough and broil them for a few minutes under the gas fire if you can to get them crispy.

Anyway, I just made us some low-fat burger patties from that recipe, and added a bunch of A-1 sauce as well...rolled them in breadcrumbs so they don''t stick to the grill. Also, prepped the corn which is just washing it and putting this awesome herbed salt from Williams Sonoma on it....that stuff gets RAVES from our friends and it''s super yummy on the corn. mmm I can''t wait to eat dinner! hehee. I got some neopolitan ice cream sandwiches from Safeway, they are not that bad actually, 7g of fat and 180 calories each...so if we want a dessert then we''ll have one of those!

We''re going for a walk after dinner too...hopefully 2-2.5 miles. Greg is all gungho. Woo hoo! Have a great night gals and let us know on how the dinner comes out Cinderella!

I had to service my car today and there was a whole foods nearby so I went. I did by a halibut filet (but I seasoned it myself). I bought the fries too, but we are not having that until tomorrow night.

So tonight''s dinner was baked halibut with salt, pepper, dill and montreal chicken seasoning (which works fine for fish too). Added some lemon when it came out and it was nice and clean. Little tomatoes with mozzarella and basil, plus a small cob of corn for each of us. I''m stuffed!

FI just went out to golf so I have the house to myself to do some workout DVDs!

yum TG...!!! tonite we had the burgers and they were DIVINE...i did a fabulous job if i do say so myself.
31.gif
since my darling hubby has the tendency to overgrill the burgers, i did them tonite and they came out perfect...i was so happy since greg was just waiting for me to drop one into the grill or something...i''m kinda clumsy.
9.gif
and the corn was SO tasty. we love corn spiced with this herb salt stuff.

then i had to practically PRY him off the couch tonite to get him to walk, but i managed to get us out the door with portia and we did about 2.5 miles around the neighborhoods. whew!

So on top of the one mile jog this morning, I just did one hour of kickboxing. Then came home and ate dinner.

The halibut filet had too much seasoning on it, so I think I may just season the fish myself in the future. I scraped off most of the seasoning and it was yummy after. My mom said that I like my food rather bland, never thought it was true, but maybe it is. But the filet was good. I had it with a cup of white rice and one serving of the fries. I know, I know, not exactly a balanced meal, but I couldn''t help it. The fries were yummy, even without broiling them (my stupid oven has to cool down from baking before it allows me to broil something). I loved the fries. They were crispy, and my bf was like, wow, you ate fish, rice and now you''re eating potatoes? Where are the veggies. I was like, I know, I know.

But overall, a really tasty dinner, and to make up for the lack of veggies (are we SURE that potatoes aren''t veggies?), I''ll eat a spinach and feta peasant pie tomorrow for lunch. Those are really good and should make up for some of my veggie requirements that I missed out on today.

By the way, did I mention that I really liked those fries? Great recommendation Mara! I have a feeling the two bags I bought will be gone rather quickly.

I did a workout DVD. Tonight was hard...it's warm in my apartment and I'm a bit tired. But I'm happy I got off my bum.

I told FI that we are having grilled chicken and fries tomorrow. I think he was happy to hear that it's going to be something besides steamed veggies! We've been eating lots of steamed veggie and salmon lately because I buy a pack from Trader Joes and it lasts a couple of days since we both only have a 4 oz serve. At first I thought it was tiny, but now it is plenty!

I'll let you all know what we think about dem fries.

ETA - Mara, Lots of men have a tendency to overgrill things. They also have a tendency to press down on the meat, making the juices run out! And they overturn. I actually take care of the grill...I have far more patience. Plus I use a meat thermometer.

Went to the gym yesterday and did the usual, but was too tired this morning so I skived off! I am blaming the heat, it is wearing me out....
14.gif

Wow, there seems to be a worldwide heat wave going on. Canada, US, Britain. Global warming or just a fluke of nature?

I have no idea but I never remember having this weather in Ireland-I could get used to it though as it beats the rain all the time.
I am so jealous that we dont have a whole foods over here-it sounds delicious.
Last night I took my dog for an hour and a half walk in the park-shes dying in this heat so she played in the river for about half an hour-I thought I''d never get her out. Today Im going to go for a run.
Have a good day everyone!

Well, I almost got my whole run in last night before it started storming. Hubby came to pick me up in his truck! As far as running goes, I have been running for 15 years and have never competed in a marathon yet. I hope to compete in a half marathon in September. Workouts are going well, so I hope I can do it. (Dixie, A 5K is 3.1 miles.) I''ve never had a runner''s high in my life. I don''t know if everyone gets them or not, but I''ve never had one. The longest race I was in was 10 miles, and I didn''t experience a high. Also, I prefer running outside to running on a treadmill. I find the treadmill to be very boring, and I find myself watching how long I ran rather than concentrating on running. I actually find running outside to be easier. But at any rate, I will be doing some more running tonight along with some weight training.

Keep up the good work, everyone!

They are saying the heat here is being caused by a high drifting over Europe from Africa. The high can naff off as far as I am concerned, this is making me feel dreadful. I hate heat!

Sorry for the quick threadjack....
emembarrassed.gif

I just got back from a 2 mile run and it was horrible because of the heat. I wonder how long it will last

I know it''s supposed to be 10 degrees cooler today than it was yesterday in Philly. It''s still supposed to be 88 but compared to 98, that''s not bad. I really don''t mind the heat that much. I ran yesterday in the heat, so I think today will feel pretty comfortable. I can''t wait to move to Hawaii where it''s mid 80''s all year round!

Today it will be 90 again...not too bad...on Monday it was almost 100. Right now it''s very nice out, at about 75...but the heat climbs quickly from about 10am onwards. And we get the full brunt of afternoon sun on our house, so it''s warmest in the late afternoon. The A/C is going on before I go to lunch today at 11 so it''ll be fine all day hopefully.

The heat does make it hard to work out for sure! I''m kickboxing tonite and hopefully I can get a 1m walk in this morning with P before I head out. Breakfast is egg whites with some cheese and some coffee. I also got this new cereal that is like some sort of ''Rebound'' cereal but I bought it just because it looked yummy...something about Green Tea Flax Banana but then I read it and it said to consume it within 60 minutes of working out so I figured maybe eating it this morning doesn''t work.

For dinner I think we''ll just have some burritos and a salad i got from whole foods. I''ve been trying to use the salads to split up my meals so that I don''t eat the WHOLE burrito, or I have Greg get me 2 tacos instead of a burrito, since the burritos are HUGE and I always feel sick after I eat it but it''s so good. So hopefully I can do that again tonite with the salad to balance it out a bit. Also I promised Greg no walk tonite, hee hee. Poor guy, he''s been so good to humor me!

Hopefully I''ll be able to get out for a walk tonignt. Tomorrow is my last day in the office, as I am taking a long 4 day weekend. We''re going up to Carmel! I''m hoping to be OK eating-wise, but we already made reservations at Bouchee. Oh well...one nice dinner won''t kill us - and I only made reservations for one night...otherwise we''d be eating our way through Carmel!

Grilled chicken and the famous Mara fries tonight....

Ok, I will definitely have to try those fries next time I go to Whole Foods. My problem is only eating the serving size. I don''t have all that much willpower. I also tend to want to keep eating them until they are done. Not good! But I love fries as well, definitely one of my favorite foods. I actually had to cut them completely out of my diet b/c if I can''t seem to eat just a couple.

I did my 2nd workout last night. I was pretty happy b/c I had a ton of stuff to do but went home and rested for a 1/2 hour, then did a tape before going back out. That is something I haven''t done in awhile so it felt good to get it done. Tonight is a gym night for me so I''m on to day 2 of Phase 4. I may do this phase a 2nd week so that I feel pretty good about being able to move on. I have been thinking about not going to workout today b/c I am exhausted! Work has been busy and rest of life has been very busy so I would loooooove some time to sit and do nothing at home, however, I like the way I feel right now (mentally) since I''m working out a bit more consistently again and don''t want to do anything to get in the way of that. So off to workout I will go. If I can stay awake that long, that is...

Thanks to everyone for sharing your running preferences/tips. I am hoping to start running outside once/wk, in addition to the 2/wk at the gym. I like the idea of measuring a 3mile distance so that I can slowly build up to that. I like to have lots of little things that I can accomplish to keep myself motivated. Whenever I have a goal that''s too far off, w/o something in between, I tend to lose focus.
TG, what kind of workout dvd did you do? I vary between tae bo and step tapes. Have a great time in Carmel!
Lorelei, I think the heat is wearing me out a bit too, although lately I barely feel it since I am always running from one place to the next. That''s good that you worked out yesterday!
Coda, are you planning a move to Hawaii? That sounds wonderful! I think the 80''s is the perfect temp. for me.

Back to work..

Dixie, I do the lamest DVD that I bought at Costco. It''s "crunch - fat burning dance party." It''s easy, but I mix it up and add my own kickboxing moves to the dance, so I do manager to work up a sweat. I bought that one and pilates one at Costco.

Maybe with the fries you can just make one serving? It''s hard to go after your more if it''s not there. That''s what I will do tonight.

I mentioned this up above but for the fries, there are typically 5 servings in one bag.

So for you and hubby or similar, just split the bag in half... put them into baggies in the freezer. Then you have basically 2.5 servings in each bag, so hubby can get 1.25 and you can get 1.25 (or sometimes I give greg a few more fries to make it 1 serving for me and 1.5 for him).

That way you make enough for the serving and that's it. Because it's too easy to just shake 'a few more fries' onto the baking pan and then suddenly it's 2 servings. And once you split them into two, the guilt of opening the 2nd bag keeps you in check!!! heehe.

OH and TG...you HAVE to go to Fourtane in Carmel!!!!!!!!! HAVE TO. It's on the main strip. I don't know if they are open on Sundays.

Mara, I wondered if that could be a restaurant or something, even though I researched restaurants pretty wel and hadn''t heard of it. But silly me...I''m a diamond forum, of course it''s a jewelry store! Duh! lol...
41.gif

I''d like to check it out, but there''s no way I am going to convince my FI to go into a jewelry store when this trip is a belated birthday trip for him. I''ll have to be satisfied checking out the motorcycles zoom by at Laguna Seca. Yuck. The things I do for him. But it''s been a longtime dream of his to go check out the racetrack.

Hi everyone! You guys sound like you are rocking with this workout thang!

I have been busy this week trying to organize a garage sale and really trying to keep cool--it''s hot here! I''ve gotten so used to trying to stay warm living outside Chicago that the 1-2 months of really hot weather are starting to get to me now! The thought of working out in the gym and then stepping outside into the heat just about kill me, lol. So I''ve been getting exercise by hauling the hose around the house to water at night recently! The upside of the heat is that it makes me want to eat nothing but room-temperature sliced tomatoes and lots of fruit, hee hee. And popsicles--I love the Breyers (?) fruit bars, strawberry flavored. And lots of Boca burgers, pan-fried, because it''s too damn hot to turn on the grill!!!
10.gif

Oh, and forget about jumping rope--for now. If it were 75 degrees instead of 90+ I would totally be on it, but you know, all that sweating and the humidity making me feel like I can''t breathe...oh you know, just makes me feel like I''m dying...
14.gif
20.gif
Am I full of excuses, or what?!
11.gif

oh monarch, you excuse giver!!!!!! don't you have A/C? do the jumping rope inside.
9.gif

i just went for a 1m walk with portia...it's pretty warm out still. i'm going to class in a few hours too. then dinner is burritos and salad...i had a sketchy eating day though. i have been having all sorts of cravings! i had lunch with a client where i had a seafood club which was divine, lots of crab and prawns and some avocado and bacon and lettuce and tomato...i ate just a bit of the bread but it was GOOD, some sort of buttered focaccia. then i don't know what came over me but i had all these unsalted almonds at the office...like 2 handfuls. then i came home and ate a few salted mozzarella balls...that has been my snack of choice in the last 2 days...hehee. nice and cold and salty and cheesy.

so today may be a funky wash in the eating dept but at least i'm exercising...hehee. i figure if i am having these random cravings like almonds and salty mozz balls my body must need it..right? right? hee hee. that is what i am going to tell myself later when i eat a neopolitan ice cream bar!!!
31.gif

on a positive body check note...things are still definitely a-changin' which is good...my little love handles are almost totally flat, my butt and legs are totally more toned, when i walk and look in the mirror there is hardly anything 'moving' at ALL which is fantabulous...still working on the waist thing but it's definitely getting there. anyway...bikini in august here i come!
37.gif

OK, new rule...don''t talk about the sinful foods...it''s not helping me. Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Anyway, sounds yummy!

Monarch, how bout ditching the rope entirely and just jumping around like a maniac inside the an airconditioned house? Flail your arms around like a dork while you''re at it...burns calories!
9.gif

Fry report...

Yummy.
Yummy.
Yummy.

Merci buckets for the rec!

Relatively good day for me, eating wise. Mara, are you sure you''re not pregnant? LOL. Those cravings are somewhat unlike you. Now if you scarfed down an entire bag of Oreos, I wouldn''t think twice.

I started with a spinach and feta cheese peasant pie. They''re sooo yummy. I had to skip breakfast today because I was running late, so that was my lunch. Then I went for another 4 hours without any food, I was just running around all day long. When I got home around 5 or so, I ate another spinach and feta peasant pie. They''re about 250 cal each, so I don''t feel too guilty about them. I also had a an apple as a snack.

For dinner, I had the 4 oz halibut fillet left over from yesterday and one serving of those yummy Mara fries (should start calling them that from now on!). I also had a tapioca pudding cup (100 cal) and one serving of sorbet.

No exercise for me today, although I did have to walk about half a mile from the bus stop to my house since my bf commandeered my car. I spent the rest of the evening packing for my visit to my sister''s, so I''ll be up earlier than usual tomorrow. Hopefully, that''ll give my metabolism an extra kick in the morning. I''ll be eating another spinach and feta pie for breakfast tomorrow. Those fill me up for a good 3 hours.

hey cinderella where do you get the spinach and feta pie...i''m curious! i wanna try it now! hehe.

those fries are INSANELY yummy aren''t they girls?!!? i definitely always have a pack or two in the freezer. and i am a total french fry whore but somehow i manage to not eat the whole bag!!

lol re: the cravings cind...no definitely not pregnant...i just feel like maybe my body is speaking to me if that makes sense, i am doing a little bit more than i was before in terms of workouts and stuff so i feel like if salty cheese sounds good then maybe i should have some! hehee. it''s kind of like when people ARE pregnant...they say that the cravings are because your BODY is requiring a nutrient or similar. so maybe i should be eating more salt and protein or something. anyway, i don''t wanna get all wild and out of control with the cravings, but i figured i coulda done worse than having 2 handfuls of unsalted, fresh almonds and a few cheese balls right?! aka the whole bag of oreos...BAD BAD!!! hehee.

worked out tonite and ate 4/5 of my mondo burrito, oops. but it was sooo good and at least it was from Aqui which means that the tortilla was whole wheat, the beans were whole pinto, the chicken is healthyish grilled, etc. it wasn''t like taco bell burrito. hehee.

I think they sell those pies at Whole Foods. Here''s their website: www.peasantpies.com. The spinach and feta is a most popular one, I think. I also like the mushroom zucchini too, that''s pretty yummy after the spinach. Then I would get the veggie frittata (sp?). Those are the best, but I haven''t tried the meat pies, so don''t take my word for it.

As for portion control on the fries, I''ve found that they take so long to prepare, I haven''t had too much trouble with controlling the portions. I just make sure I toss no more than 10 of them on the baking sheet and wait until they''re done. By the time I''m done eating them, I''m full and, frankly, too lazy to get up off my behind to make some more. Gotta preheat the oven, get the fries and arrange them on the baking sheet....can you tell I hate cooking in any shape or form?
9.gif

I overslept this morning so missed the gym
emembarrassed.gif
Its the heat I''m telling you! Now I am feeling wretched and guilty, I need to take my own advice when other posters feel guilty for missing their workouts and I say not to.....Could I be getting addicted to the crosstrainer?????
23.gif

LOL, guilt is a normal feeling Lorelei. I feel guilty whenever I go a day without working out, so yes, you may actually be getting addicted!

Seriously though, you''ve been doing so well, you can afford to take a day off, especially with this heat!
