Well, I’ve had the vaccine, anyone else?

Many flu vaccines are actually grown in eggs. Whole "live" virus is injected into special chicken eggs. The eggs permit viral replication. The virus is then purified from the eggs and inactivated, further purified and then this is the vaccine. This is a pretty slow process, which is fine for annual flu vaccines, but not for this race against time siutation. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are mRNA vaccines which are essentially synthesized rather than grown. No eggs are involved.

I am not aware of any advanced COVID vaccine candidates being grown in eggs, but that doesn't mean there aren't some that use that technology. There are MANY vaccine candidates, and I've not followed them all.

Well this is good news for the people with egg aligiee

Have you read anything about the vaccine causing possible infertility for females? I am almost embarrassed asking this because I don't know if this is one of the fear-mongering rumors out there. Having two daughters - 19 & 17, I want all of us to get the vaccine but would never chance their future child bearing abilities.

Mom I haven't heard that. But they are still doing trials for young folks including kids, so at this time they are not recommending kids to get the vaccine. Eta I searched vaccine and infertility, and this is what came up. I think it is another rumor. In fact 23 women who were participating in the COVID trial got pregnant.

It’s a fear mongering rumor. The rumor goes that antibodies which your body develops to the viral spIke protein produced from the mRNA vaccine will also cross-react with a protein involved in placental development. It has been debunked by scientists. And let me say that if this mechanism was actually true (which to be clear it’s not), the risk to fertility would potentially be similar between getting vaccinated and getting COVID-19 because you would be expected to develop antibodies to spIke protein in both cases. And that’s not what the data in pregnant women who become infected with COVID shows (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33211113/).

There is not much data on use of this vaccine in pregnant women. Some women did become pregnant during the studies for Pfizer‘s and Moderna’s vaccines, but it was a handful, and the study was set up to exclude women who were already pregnant, which is typical for clinical studies of this type. There are ongoing development and reproductive toxicology studies wrapping up in rats right now. If there had been a significant adverse outcome in those studies, we would have known by now. The DART studies will inform potential use in pregnant and lactating women.

You are wonderful. Thanks for helping us understand the vaccine.

My son got it on Wednesday, but he's working in an inner city hospital (last year of med school). Out here in the country I'll bide my time until it's available.

Eta: he said the s/e were minimal, less than the flu vaccine, which he also has to take.

I agree, it is fear mongering. I will taking my 17 year old daughter to get vaccinated when it is available and highly encouraging my 21 year old daughter to get it (she wants to get it). Both my daughters want kids one day.

Yup. Sore arm for a day but now I’m totally fine. We will see how round two in January goes! Can’t wait

After one dose how much safer is it going to work for you and your colleagues?

Yeah this is complete rubbish.

The BioNTech one (I mean Pfizer) was designed by a husband-and-wife team, btw. Of course that doesn't mean it's 100% safe. If they really wanna scare people, they should say it causes impotence.

If that's the case then Pfizer will give a life time supply of Viagra for free.

I got a bee sting tonight (im obviously not allergic because its my 2nd one in 3 years)
But OMG it hurts so bad
I cannot imamgine anything about the vaccine hurting this much !

We’re not changing the way we behave at all, still doing masks, social distancing and PPE when required. There’s some immunity around 12 days after the initial dose which increases until after the 2nd dose.

Same. I think we all feel better for numerous reasons but we won’t be changing our PPE or safer habits anytime soon. I plan to keep up masking well into 2022 most likely here in the USA, if not longer. Wearing masks in winter may be the new normal from here on out.

Silver lining: I think shaking hands is officially over. Thanks goodness. I always felt it was awkward! Also since social distancing guidelines, I have had many fewer experiences of men trying to chat me up when I’m just out and about. I’m hoping continued mask wearing will still deter that even after covid is largely controlled here.

Hubby will have access soon as an EMS pilot. He was dead set against it last week, but some of his most respected colleagues are making a case for why they trust it. I think hubby may sign up for it after he sees a few others get their shot. I am so insanely happy over this.

Sis had her shot last week. I am so happy.

I filled out a survey two weeks ago saying I would take it but I wanted to wait to see how others would react to it first. They started giving them to employees last Friday.
I just got an email today that I can take it.
it’s not the Pfizer one, it’s the Moderna one.
I went ahead and scheduled it for tomorrow afternoon. Wish me luck!

Today I learned that my work counterpart's wife was vaccinated. She's a nurse on a Covid floor in a hospital so it makes sense.

Also today I got this message in email. for those who may not know I'm in the Cove Study:

We are getting information from Moderna regarding getting everyone vaccinated.

If you received the active vaccine - you will receive a card confirming that you got it.

If you received the placebo - you will be given the choice to come to our office and get the vaccine (both the shot and booster) and you will receive a card confirming that you got it.

Please do be patient and know that we will contact you to set up the first visit, or contact you to confirm you got the vaccine.

So basically looks like they're going to unblind everyone @m-cubed ?

Great news for you! Congrats on getting the vaccine, or access to the vaccine.

I had heard this from someone else I know in the study. So yes, sounds like they are unblinding the groups. The FDA had raised the possibility of a cross-over study, where the vaccine group gets a placebo shot and the placebo group gets the vaccine, but that doesn’t sound quite like what’s planned.

I want to get the vaccine asap! I work with children and teach at a large public University so I *think* I will be eligible for it whenever other teachers are (but not sure). I will get it as soon as I am able

Just had the Pfizer vaccine a few days ago. Had a fever (39 degrees Celsius) and severe headache which is getting better, but it took me by surprise. I would still choose to have it every time.
