So the little sapphire with the large "gouge" came back from Oldminer''s appraisal today in Philly, thought I''d share the results:

The chip could be either a chip or a natural, he isn''t sure but since it doesnt effect the faceup or the girdle outline--enh. They should have mentioned it but it is not a huge deal.

Here are the formal specs:

1.55 ct exact, 5.7 x 5.4x 5.1
modified brilliant cut crown and step cut, deep pavilion
App VS2 type II clarity GIA and unheated
App #362 AGL color scan. Appears to be an excellent Ceylon color type.
Very good brilliancy, app 5% windowing.
appx retail value: 3500

My fiance doesn''t know what some of these terms mean and I wasn''t there so I couldn''t butt in and ask--could someone be kind enough to tell me what

"#362 AGL color scan" and "type II" clarity mean? Also I thought "windowing" was when you could see through the bottom of the stone, a ''dead'' area with no brilliance. This makes it sound like all stones have some percent of windowing.

Anyway, we are keeping the stone.

I would really love to set it in something to showcase its "belly"--valeria already put up a leon pic on the old thread that looks good, but if anyone has ideas I''d be happy to hear/see them :-) We''re talking to Harzin''s again on Sat.

Well...I''m glad you''ve decided to keep it...I''m so in love with the color and the shape.

I THINK type II means its in a class of gemstones that normally show a certain amount of inclusions. I think emeralds and rubellite are type III...meaning that they are usually quite included. I don''t know what''s type one...aqua, topaz, maybe? I''m sure an expert will chime in an straighten me out..

Congratulations, Trout!

I''ll be thinking about "belly baring" mountings..

I will take a WAG at your ratings. Oldminer appears to be using the GIA system for clarity and the AGL system for color/tone.

The GIA type II clarity system is used for Sapphires - kind of a handicap compared to diamonds since most rubies and sapphires have inclusions. The VS2 is a very good clarity rating (like a diamond VS2 with handicap) it is eye clean under most conditions.

Another WAG - The AGL 362 means a color of 3 and a tone of 62 - I guess. Which means it has an very good color and medium tone.

Sounds very nice!. Appraised price seems in the ballpark (for retail price). Best wishes!

Thanks bertrand--the ring you created is so lovely, looked at it quite a few times while trying to talk the finace into a sapphire!

Now I''m having the endless debate...pave or baguettes...pave or baguettes..I feel that the stone is a little more antique in its cut so perhaps pave. We''ll see. Not really a topic for this forum, in any case

I know, you didn''t ask..

...but I vote for baguettes, or bullets, or some kind of sides.

Probably because of all the time I spend around here, I''m sort of maxed out on pave. Besides, I''m a ''less is more'' kinda gal...

About the windowing, in most "native" cut stones, they use a step cut on the pavilion. THis allows them to more closely follow the natural outline of the stone and retain more weight. It usually also cause the stone to be windowed since they will cut below the critical angle for the material, or lopsided or both. With your stone, and 5%, I would assume that the last tier of facets at the cutlet are cut a bit under the critical angle causing a slight window in the center of the stone. This amount is not to bad, and wouldnt warrent recutting the stone.

bullets? what is this bullet you speak of?

I took these ''pictures'' off of www.diamondsbylauren.com :

L to R: Baguette, Bullet (tapered, can also be had straight), trapezoids, half moons, and what he calls "home plates". I forgot to add trillions...

Better you go to the site and check them out...they have examples of rings mounted with each of these sidestone options..
